This week we have 3 new MMOs to keep you busy ahead of next week’s deluge of conventions. It’s highly unlikely that you’ve heard of any of these games, but if you’re a sports fan, or love making hybrid classes, you’ll definitely want to check these out.
Soul Shifters
Soul Shifters by Xtreaming released onto Steam on March 14th, 2024. The 2D MMO grants you new abilities by absorbing the Daemons that inhabit the world. If you wish to succeed in the dangerous dungeons, you’ll have to master your daemon skills, which you can swap around depending on the encounters you’re up against.
Soul Shifters is open world, has a “humorous” story, and has plenty of daemons for you to absorb, including legendary variants. The game is cross-platform with a mobile version, as many of these games are. Released in February on Mobile, and with over 100K downloads on mobile alone, the game has struggled to get a substantial number of user reviews, but the few that have reviewed the game have noted trouble with movement, tons of bugs, and a robust—cash shop. This could be a great game, one day. For now, expect a ton of issue, but as a free game, if you have patience, it may be worth a try.
Out of the Park Baseball 25
Do you like baseball? Of course you do, even if you don’t. Out of the Park Baseball 25 by Out of the Park Developments released on Steam March 15th. The game puts you in the management seat where you’ll take your favorite franchise all the way… maybe even out of the park. The game franchise itself has been around for, well, 25 years as the name suggests, and the 25th anniversary can be celebrated on Steam, along with a never before partnership with the Baseball Hall of Fame.
The game has been updated with 2024 rosters, greater player control both in and out of the game, and an updated game engine. The good news is that previous players of the franchise love the new updates, with a positive review score on Steam. As you cultivate your team you’ll be able to compete against thousands of other players online, which is why this game is listed as an MMO. If you’re a baseball fan, or you just really love management sims, OOTPB 25 might be for you.
Top Heroes
I missed Top Heroes the last week of February, so I figured I’d add it this week as they just released their first post-launch update. Top Heroes is a mobile MMORPG that lets you group up with allies and explore the world, PvP against your fellow humans, or build the stronghold that you’ve always wanted.
With over 1 million downloads on Android alone, and a 4.4 rating, it seems like developer Green Mushroom managed to make a fun mobile title, even if some reviews acknowledge that, like most mobile games, there’s a huge advantage as a paying player. According to one review, “Almost everything can be bought” and the battlepass is extremely difficult if not impossible to complete unless you pay. That doesn’t bode well if you’re looking for a diversion as a free player, but with a smattering of good reviews to balance out the complaints, it might be worth a go if you’re looking for a mobile diversion.
