We’re rolling along with our MMO Launch Spotlight! This week we saw the launch of Final Fantasy 14s expansion Dawntrail and a cross-platform shooter from Nexon also hit their release window. Let’s check out what else launched over the past week.
Final Fantasy 14: Dawntrail
Final Fantasy 14 fans, it’s your time to rejoice as the Dawntrail expansion has finally, officially released as of July 2nd, 2024. After several days of Early Access, the release of Dawntrail was met with a few launch hiccups, such as loading issues for console players and PlayStation store lockouts.
Luckily, Square Enix has been taking these issues seriously, and they’ve provided some additional free game time to make up for the early snafus. The update brings two new classes, lots of new content, and a graphics overhaul which will delight fans that felt the previous graphics were getting a little outdated. If you haven’t jumped into FFXIV in a while, now is a fantastic time to do so.
Legendary Road Online
Legendary Road Online has just been released on Steam as of June 30th, 2024. This game is essentially a private server of Silkroad Online from what we’ve been able to gather. With that being said, Legendary Road Online has “launched” but there’s no telling exactly how long it will continue to run.
This version of Silkroad has been running on its own website for about a year at this point, but its presence on Steam is new, and likely short-lived. If you’re a fan of Silkroad Online and for some reason don’t want to join the official servers from Joymax, you can try and check this out for however long it lasts – but it doesn’t appear there’s much of a following on Steam as of right now.
The First Descendant
Rounding out our list this week is the MMO-lite The First Descendant. This third person shooter is Nexon’s answer to Destiny 2. The free to play title has certainly garnered its own following, and has a lot to offer, including a semi-open world where you can meet up with fellow players and take on some events while you aim to unlock new characters.
Our previous impressions hailed The First Descendant as having great co-op play that would be a fantastic experience for a group of friends. After launching on July 2nd, 2024 to mixed reviews, that game is still raking in nearly 200K concurrent players consistently on Steam, and because the game is crossplay with Xbox and PlayStation, you should have no problems finding people to play with. If you don't want to download the game, you can jump over and give it a try on GeForce Now.
