It’s that time of the year again. 2017 was a crazy year for gaming, but 2018 is shaping up to be pretty awesome as well. This week, I’m sharing my list of my most anticipated games of 2018. Share yours with us in the comments!
#5 Sea of Thieves
Sea of Thieves is a game I’m cautiously optimistic about. I mean, seriously, who doesn’t want to get together with a group of friends, sail the high seas and plunder some booty? The art style and the water physics are pretty neat, too. And I’m excited to do some ship to ship combat with a crew of friends. My main concerns at this point have to do with the game's progression. It seems like it’s mostly cosmetic, so I’m not too sure the game would hold my interest for long. I am excited to check it out, though.
#4 Battlefield ????
This would be much higher on my list if I actually knew what the next entry in the series was going to be. There’s almost nothing I get more excited for in gaming than a new Battlefield game, but the setting and what DICE ends up doing with gameplay this time around will factor heavily into how excited I get for this one. I’ve been hoping we either go back to WWII (with real naval warfare, please) or go future warfare with Battlefield 2143. 2142 was my favorite Battlefield in the entire series for many reasons and I feel if DICE could up the ante on what was already a great game with a sequel, it’d have a real hit on its hands.
#3 Spider-Man
The new Spider-Man game by Insomniac simply looks awesome. The bits of story we’ve seen so far have been impressive (going with Mr. Negative as a villain was a bold choice), but what I’m really eager to do is web swing around the city in a new open-world Spider-Man title. It’s been a long time since the glory days of Spider-Man 2, but I have a good feeling that Insomniac’s take on the wall crawler will be a hit. The new suit is really snazzy, too.
#2 Civilization VI: Rise & Fall
I haven’t been a Civilization fan for as long as most diehards, but I've been addicted ever since the bug finally bit me with Civilization V. Unlike V, Civilization VI launched as a complete game. The game has its flaws, but players don’t need to wait around for Firaxis to fill the game out with basic features in new expansions. It’s already got a solid foundation. This opened Firaxis up to expanding Civ VI in new and interesting ways, which is what the game’s first expansion, Rise & Fall, looks to be doing when it releases in February. There are far too many things to talk about here, but I’m particularly excited for the expanded Alliance features, the loyalty system, and the ability to play tall via the use of the new Governor feature.
#1 Anthem
The demo we got last year blew my socks off and I have a soft spot for looter shooters, so I’m already pretty pumped for Anthem. I’m not too confident the game will make it this year, but if it does, and EA/BioWare manages to get its act together, it could be a massive hit. Destiny 2 was a huge disappointment for me, and while I love The Division, it’s a bit old news at this point, so I’m ready for something new. Will Anthem scratch that itch? I sure hope so. One thing everyone will be watching is the game’s approach to monetization. With all the controversy over loot boxes, particularly with EA’s Battlefront II, Anthem could be in trouble before it ever goes live if EA doesn’t figure out a way to course correct.
