House Hunters: Eorzea Edition

One of the features I found most interesting that SE talked about during this letter was the fact that Free Company houses are going to have an underground crafting area and that players will be able to build airships in this area that allows players access to content. This isn’t the first time SE has said this features exists and while they did not go into great detail on what this content will be but it piques my interest every time I hear it.

One player asked if we would be able to raise monsters that we know drop a material that we want to harvest and then kill them for that material. SE said no. But we will be able to fish in the housing area. So it turns out we will be able to fish but we will not be able to farm. Also if for whatever reason your Free Company decides to part ways you will have to abandon your house before you can disband the FC. Finally for those of you curious about individual player housing, you are going to have to wait roughly another six months after patch 2.1 before you can have a place to call your own.

When I first started playing MMO’s I could not care less about player housing. I was more concerned about raiding and earning all the high level gear I could for my avatar. As the time I have to game has become more limited I have come to have a greater appreciation for housing systems. It allows me to have something to work on that is on my terms, not a lockout reset. I like what I see so far but I am concerned that there will not be a maintenance fee on homes. I think SE is going to learn a harsh lesson that other developers have had to learn about urban decay and house abandonment. It won’t be much fun if you live in a block of 30 houses and yours is the only one that is occupied. They will need to find a way to reclaim these lots and keep areas populated.

What about you? What are your feelings in regards to housing? Do you think these resources would be better served making hard modes of existing dungeons? Creating brand new dungeons? Making additional raid content? Do you think housing is just fluff content or do you think it is a feature that cannot be ignored? Let us know in the comments below.
