Final Fantasy XIV: Mounts & the Letter from the Producer

Hello again my awesome friends, welcome back to another edition of The Eorzea Prospect!  Last time I left off working with Noctis to get my very own Regalia!  Regalia GET-O!

Over the past week I have been busy working on my questline with Noctis, as well as farming MGP at the Gold Saucer to get the 200k MGP Regalia.  Note that prior to this event I have truly never bothered with the Gold Saucer, I had my work cut out for me.  Granted it wasn’t exactly hard to amass 200k MGP with the easy Fashion Report’s the last couple weeks but having to learn all the mechanics for Lord of Vermillion and Triple Triad was unique to say the least.

Without going into spoilers, as I’m sure there are some that have yet to complete the questline, the crossover event with Noctis was okay.  It wasn’t great, but it wasn’t bad either.  I feel like it was a bit short, and the ending was a bit rushed.  Yet at the same time we got an amazing 4 person mount out of the deal, so can we really complain?

As I stated above, I never really bothered with the Gold Saucer before.  Honestly, I’m surprised I hadn’t.  I’m glad, though, as the place is a den of addiction. My first endeavor was with Triple Triad, that wasn’t enough, so I moved to Lord of Vermillion.  Pair that with the Fashion Report and I lost a lot of gil, and time, thanks to this Manderville casino. The gates are fun, the mini games are addicting, it just adds so much to do outside of the primary objective of the game, you don’t see options like this often in MMORPGs.  I foresee myself spending a lot of time in this place, though I’m not sure I’ll ever understand Mahjong.

My Free Company has been running weekly “farms” for mounts the past couple weeks.  While collecting mounts has never been a priority for me, I did manage to score a nice bird mount Thursday night. We only saw I think maybe 4 whistles all night, but the Sophic Lanner is now mine!  I really like this mount!  It’s rather sad that it’s such a low drop rate, but if everyone had it, it wouldn’t be so awesome would it?

All in all, I managed to score two new mounts this past week, the FC might be turning me into a mount collector.  I got to finish the Crossover event, and now just patiently waiting until next Tuesday when I get to be one of the first in the world to try out the new expansion and the Dancer job! I can’t wait to report back to you guys my findings and any details and media I can share with you, it’s going to be awesome!

Did you read the latest Letter from the Producer?  Yoshi-P brought some news to light regarding the two new jobs and races.  One question I had planned to ask him in my interview was exactly the issue revolving around gender locked races.  The way he puts it in the letter, it was too much work.  I don’t know about you, but to me that seems a little…lacking.  Too much work? I get it, it takes a lot of time to properly create a race, and then to worry about both sexes body types and whether gear will fit, etc., takes time.  But to justify the gender locking of a race by it’s too much work just doesn’t sit right with me.

If you’ll recall, back in the original 2010 release of FFXIV, Miqo’te and Roegadyn were gender locked.  This caused a huge uproar in the community.  After the failed launch, and then re-launch of A Realm Reborn, we saw those locks removed.  If only that remained true today.  People are upset, and rightly so, there is no reason to have a gender locked race in any modern MMORPG. I play a female character most of the time.  I have male characters, but those go along with the names I created, or use for them.  It just happens that the name I’ve used in MMORPG’s for the past 20 years has been Thazi, which is a female character.  It’s just how I play these games.  I, like many others, “choose” to play whatever gender we want.  Locking these races is a poor choice to me, but this whole gender locking thing has been discussed time and time again and we all get, so I’ll leave it at that.

On the bright side, it looks like we will be able to utilize visual headgear on the Viera and Hrothgar. If you didn’t know, originally there would be no “visual” headgear as the models, according to Square, would make it entirely too difficult and time consuming to make it work. Thankfully someone on the team decided that the idea of not being able to see their headgear wasn’t cool, so they took it upon themselves to make over five hundred and forty headgear pieces that will work and display properly on both races!  There is hope!
