Dark or Light

A Citizen of the World

Much of the Camelot Unchained news last week was “there is going to be bigger news next week (Friday)”. Unfortunately, I have to write this column before said bigger news lands so I ask, where does that leave my little chunk of internet real-estate? I suppose I could wax poetically about philosophical MMO concepts and sociology applied to MMORPGs then scaled up for use in real life but frankly looking at current events in society right now I find myself in a fairly disillusioned state. I see hatred and violence happen and they are met with more hatred and violence in a never ending escalation that Game Theory tells us has a very disturbing conclusion. Worse yet we’ve seen it happen for thousands of years but we keep making the same mistakes!

I don’t want to be unfair to City State Entertainment or MMORPG.com but at the same time, I feel like silence is the same as doing nothing. I am a MMORPGer, we aren’t the kind to do nothing!

"I am not an Athenian, nor a Greek, but a citizen of the world." If Socrates figured that out in 400 BC, then why are so many of us still struggling with it? Our country is the Earth, our only race is human. The things that separate us from one another are constructs that are often more metaphysical or cultural than physical. Too many of us spend our time fighting over sand and superstition at the expense of human progress. Frankly, I just don’t understand it. Its 2016, shouldn’t we be past this by now?

The reality is we are fortunate beings living on a tiny spec of dirt that got lucky enough to land in a beam of light from a fairly average star that granted us delicate life in a Universe that is trying to destroy us! (Thank you Carl Sagan and Neil Tyson.)

It sounds cold and uncomfortable but the Universe doesn’t care what our personal beliefs are. We need to respect its power and take steps to secure the life we have, both our own and our planets, because without it there is no more us. That means setting aside our differences be they race or religion, politics, culture or beyond; looking up thinking bigger and figuring out how to save us from ourselves so we can save ourselves and our planet from the Universe.

Speaking of progress for the greater good (transitional sentence points awarded). Progress on replacing thousands of lines of code in the old Camelot Unchained ability system continues! The new system will do everything they want it to with consideration for the future as well. I can’t help but think that is a veteran move by developer that has been bitten by shortcuts in past games. As a fan the wait for beta is miserable but the bad more than outweighs the good on this one. We’ve all experienced MMOs that stayed on the easier path and we all know how they turned out (pours libations).

Mighty morphing C.U.B.E. continues to impress. The more intricate and beautiful these buildings get the more I want to burn them to the ground. I’m pretty sure I’m not the only one! When I backed Camelot Unchained a few years ago I expected it to have a basic building system but I never expected one with such depth and functionality. It’s gotten to the point where the creations are so big and so complex and so interesting I almost don’t want to burn them down, almost.

“In terms of User Stories, today’s count is: 19 old cards with 69 completes, and 1 new card with 40 completes.” As I often say there is plenty of meat and potatoes in those user stories. The art on the cards is pretty nice too. I assume they also use User Stories internally as a means to focus on and check off items. They are, perhaps, the single closest look behind the curtain of the developmental process we can access. If you have read them then you would know the 3 starting continents are being developed. I can’t help but wonder (CAUTION WILD INTERNET SPECULATION) if that doesn’t have something to do with Beta coming near? We can only hope.

While I was on my way back to this column from the User Stories I strayed from the path, as I’m known to do, and ended up in the “armory” section of the website. I might have said this before but, while many people think of Mark Jacobs as the RVR and DAOC creator, I tend to think of something else as his trademark. I’ll admit I only glanced at Dark Age of Camelot but I spent some time in WAR Online and I always drink in new Camelot Unchained Art.

In doing so it’s become obvious to me that the “MJ brand” means serious realm based aesthetic differences with equally deep race distinction within those realms. I really can’t say enough for what those aesthetics do for a visually sensitive gamer like myself. I don’t mean graphics, frankly I don’t care about graphics in most cases. I love that each realm, each race and the weapons and armor of the realms in MJ games contain a story and a character that is unique to them. “What do you mean?” I’m glad you asked! See the two images below. An axe by any other name is not necessarily an ax in the Camelot Unchained Universe because those two weapons, while similar, are very different in a good way.

It’s time to chop this column down but before I do I want to cut to the last bit of CU news or should I say, rumors...Whispers of the number 4 and the big news coming later this week have been floating around the CUniverse. What could the correlation be? What does it all mean? Feel free to speculate in the comments below. Until next time, stay sharp.
