5 Things to Do During the 24-Hour Site Maintenance

As most of you are aware, MMORPG.com will be going dark at about 3:00 pm Pacific / 6:00 pm Eastern for what we hope will be a 24-hour maintenance period to migrate over a decade’s worth of content from this dinosaur of a site to the brand new shiny, faster, prettier and more functional site that will greet your eyes when all is complete.

However, we all understand our need...well, let’s say “affection” (not addiction) for the best site for news, columns, developer content and information about MMOs. So what can we all do for an entire day -- or in Internet time, an eternity?

Cry

It’s hard to be separated from the one you love. MMORPG.com consists of thousands of voices, those with whom we cross sabers every day or those with whom we’ve formed bonds of kinship that stretch across multiple games and subforums. Then there are Bill’s words of pithy Internet commentary, Mike’s forum benevolence, and much more that have bonded us as a community.

Oh, and there are the trolls that sometimes come to rock the Peace Train of our little corner of the ‘Net. Sometimes a good trolling is good for blood flow, so even they have a place in our world and offer a reason to visit (purely for entertainment purposes only, of course).

So shed a few lonely tears today but know we’ll be back bigger, brighter and ready to hit the ground running again on the morrow.

Play a Game: You Know, Those Things We Discuss Ad Nauseum

Most of us spend our time on the site reading about and discussing games. It’s easy, though, to get lost in the rhetoric and actually forget to play them. Today’s a good day to head into your favorite game and earn one of those elusive achievements or take part in a good PvP match to relieve the stress of being deprived of MMORPG.com or work those professions and create beautiful art in cooking or blacksmithing or farming. Hey, even hunt down a few bugs or cheaters and report them to the devs. So shines a good deed in a weary world, right?

Whatever your game of choice is, go spend awhile there to bring back a few stories when all goes live again tomorrow.

Quest Outside

This one is probably the edgiest of them all. I know I’ll be opening my curtains today and letting in the light of day -- and probably dusting once done. And then...I’m going outside. I know. Radical, right? But something has to be done with this free time so why not check out that new zone called “Outside” and see if the NPCs have any quests for you...though be gentle. It might not be a great idea to run (since we all run in game) up to some dude on the street and start asking him about his background and what you can do for him today. The answers might be frightening...or painful...or...yeah.

I’m with you. I’m staying in.

Refresh the Page Every 30 Seconds

This one’s the easiest of all. I’m pretty sure I heard Bill say that if we collectively refreshed the MMORPG.com page 1,007,752,397 times, the site would go live. It’s like a trick or something.

No...really, he said so and you know that if it’s on the Internet, it’s true.

Whitelist MMORPG.com

Honestly, the most important thing you can do while you wait, is give MMORPG.com the old thumbs up. We get it. But we’re also in it to support the sites we love and you can too. Keep in mind the writers that have made you think or want to post on the forums, the staff -- and it is a tiny one -- that tries to keep things fresh and available for all of you. We need your support to keep this site, this tiny corner of the Internet, up and running with the best MMO + RPG + FPS + RTS content out there. So do us a solid and check your blocker at the door.

In the meantime, we’re working away to get things back up for you and will diligently strive to earn your patronage and support.

See you tomorrow!
