In this "whenever we feel like it" column, we'll be talking about, reviewing, and previewing all the best and brightest RPGs coming to the market, even if they're not "MMO" in nature.
Amidst the best game communities are modders willing to breathe new life into the games they love, expanding them beyond their original scope, and introducing them to entire new audiences. So long as the publisher is willing to let them, of course. That wasn’t the case this week as Square Enix dropped the boot on a years-long Final Fantasy project, much to the dismay of fans.
It’s Friday and that means it’s time for another edition of The Week in RPGs, your weekly breakdown of all things roleplaying games. This week we’re talking Girls Make Games, new extended gameplay video for Dragon Age: Inquisition, Mass Effect 4, Dark Souls 2’s first DLC, Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel invading Borderlands 2, and even a new Final Fantasy game.
Another week has gone by and that means more RPG news is on the offer. Thankfully, the RPG Files is here with all the news that’s fit to print, presented to you in the special, snarky way that only we can. This week we have a victory for gender equality, an extended look at Dragon Age: Inquisition, a new game from one of the producers of The Witcher coming to stores, the many collector’s editions of Bungie’s Destiny, and more. There’s always more.
The post-E3 lull doesn’t have us down! It’s another full week of RPG news here at the RPG Files. For the week of July 3rd, we have a new Dragon Age character reveal, a Witcher spin-off, Destiny predictions, and another case of professional gaming as a boys’ club. Read on for all that and more!
Dungeon of the Endless is a bit of a mind-bender to describe. In fact, when I first heard of it, I had trouble conceptualizing what the game even was. A rogue-like melded with tower defense? What does that even look like? If ever there were two genres I didn’t expect to meet, those were it. Imagine my surprise when I found that it’s also a full-fledged RPG with definite RTS leanings. Mind. Blown.
Every Friday, we break down the week’s biggest news in the world of roleplaying games and serve it up fresh, all in one place. This week we have our Lion of Lannister meeting Moon Wizards in Destiny, the forty endings of Bioware’s Dragon Age: Inquisition culled down to “only a few,” and Elite: Dangerous putting Star Citizen to shame. Read on for that and much more!

It’s an apt description and this year’s conference was no let down. We have a week of coverage in store for you but until then, this is your first look at the RPGs of E3.

Action RPGs continue to get better on mobile platforms. Fans of the in depth Warhammer 40,000 universe will be excited to fight their way through all kinds of foes in the upcoming moble side-scrolling RPG: Carnage. The game puts players in the super armor of a Space Marine and has them fend off Orks and other baddies. We spoke to Kayla Kinnunen about the project to get an idea of what it is like to put the epic universe into a much smaller platform.
Members of the original TQ team banded together to form Crate Entertainment, now hard at work on another action RPG, Grim Dawn. Grim Dawn uses a modernized version of the game engine developed for Titan Quest and is currently in alpha testing on Steam. As the name implies, the world is a grim and depressing place. Humanity is quite literally on the verge of extinction with two warring factions bent on its destruction.
It isn’t often you get to play a game that feels authentically like it was made 8 years ago. While it may be a bit of an exaggeration to describe Spellforce 2: Demons of the Past in such a way, it also isn’t very far off. With Demons of the Past, we are not only getting a standalone expansion in the series that doesn’t require owning previous iterations, but we are also finally seeing the end of the Spellforce 2 story.
One of my all-time-top-ten-life-decisions (hey, I'm 23 there haven't been many) is when I traded-in Wario Land on Gameboy and made off with Fallout 2. In an act of incredible foresight, and laughable PEGI standards, I managed to snag one of the greatest RPGs ever simply on the basis that I thought the 'guy on the box looks proper cool'.
