The RPG Files

In this "whenever we feel like it" column, we'll be talking about, reviewing, and previewing all the best and brightest RPGs coming to the market, even if they're not "MMO" in nature.

Hands On with Far Cry 5's American Adventure

The event was complete with a firing range for slingshots and crossbows, ATVs, a meet and greet with everyone’s new favorite in-game pup, Boomer and a supervillain style helicopter entrance from the game’s charismatic preacher: The Father, Joseph Seed. But you’re not here to see what kind of party Ubisoft throws… you’re here for the game.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance: Our Final Review

Kingdom Come: Deliverance has been out for two weeks. Last week, we gave you our first impressions. Today, we’re back with our final review. What did we think after nearly a dozen more hours? Read on to find out.

Vermintide 2 Looks Like It’s Going to be Chaos

The Warhammer Universe is difficult to describe in just a few words. It is a massive, sprawling beast that encompasses gods, men, and monsters. It has seen kingdoms rise and worlds descend into chaos, but I am not here to talk of these momentous moments. Instead, I got a taste of Vermintide 2, the tale of five warriors and their personal battles against the encroaching darkness.

Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age PC Review - Ivalice Never Looked So Good

In many ways, Final Fantasy XII really established the nature of the series we can still see with newer releases such as Final Fantasy XV today. Flashforward eleven years and the game has finally found its way onto PC with the remaster which originally released on PlayStation 4 last year. And with the PC release comes a myriad of changes and additions that make Final Fantasy XII on PC the best way to experience its story yet.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance - A Glimpse at Medieval Life

If you’ve ever wondered what life would be like if you lived in the middle ages, Warhorse Studios has your answer. Kingdom Come: Deliverance is a sprawling open-world RPG in the vein of Skyrim but one that casts fantasy to the side in exchange for realism. It’s an amazingly detailed look at Bohemia in the year 1403, but does this commoner’s tale stack up to the open-world RPGs it’s trying to emulate?

Hunt: Showdown Closed Alpha Impressions

Hunt: Showdown’s concept had me intrigued ever since I first got wind about it last year. You and a partner are Hunters tasked to hunt down a monster in a hauntingly beautiful map by following clues using your Dark Sight (think Arkham Asylum Detective Mode). Along the way, you’ll have to avoid gloriously grotesque creatures who are all trying to kill you. In short, find monster. Kill monster. Banish monster. Evacuate.

Pillars of Eternity 2 Hands On Preview - It May Be Obsidian's Best RPG Yet

Over the course of the last several days, I've had a chance to sit down to play Obsidian's Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire, the latest in a stellar line up of cRPGs that have taken gaming by storm over the last couple of years. Taking note of the original game and expanding on nearly every aspect from the technical to the aesthetics to the story itself, the game moves the Pillars IP forward in fantastic new ways.

PopUp Dungeon: Your Cat (Or Whatever, Really) Can Star in this RPG

PopUp Dungeon was recently announced in partnership with Humble Bundle. The game takes user-generated content to the next level, allowing everyone to bring in their own assets to make their ideal dungeons, play with friends, level up, and run endless content. We caught up with Triple-B-Titles to talk about the game and its design.

Tangledeep Review - Living In A Retro World

In an age when retro-gaming seems to be the craze (e.g. the SNES Classic Edition) the time seems right for Impact Gameworks’ roguelike PC RPG that harkens back to the age of 16-bit SNES RPG classics. Does this swashbuckling, dungeon crawler pull us in “deep” or will it leave us “tangled” in a quagmire of 16-bit flashbacks we’d rather forget? This is our review of Tangledeep on the PC.

Lost Sphear - Fighting in the Moonlight

I am Setsuna was released roughly 18 months after the formation of Tokyo RPG Factory. The game was good but it lacked some of the things that made the Chrono Series and early Final Fantasy games excellent. Hot from the Factory less than 2 years after I am Setsuna’s release Lost Sphear looks to evolve what Setsuna started. This is our Lost Sphear review for the Nintendo Switch.

Darkest Dungeon On Switch is Where It Truly Shines

Red Hook Studios has brought Darkest Dungeon to the Nintendo Switch. and the release on Switch feels like it's where the game belongs, allowing both portability and touch-screen controls when undocked, but also a controller scheme (though a bit confusing at first) as well as being able to easily play on the big screen. This is our Darkest Dungeon review for the Nintendo Switch.

Ancient Heartbeats of Hawaii Come to Life in Nightmarchers

Fantastic news in the RPG shooter community today with Wyrmbyte launching their Fig campaign for much anticipated title, Nightmarchers! Fig is the newest crowdfunding platform whose first client was Kingdoms & Castles and since has delivered games like Pillars of Eternity II. To celebrate we took a hands on look at Nightmarchers and also caught up with Wyrmbyte founder and president, Scott Brown.

Raji: An Ancient Epic - Bringing Mythology to Life

It is unlikely that you have ever played a game set in the world that you'd find yourself in while playing Raji: An Ancient Epic. The game takes its inspiration from Hindu and Balinese mythology and blends it together with the look and feel of Ancient India, complete with music that sets the perfect mood. We had the chance to chat with the good folks at Nodding Heads about Raji, the KickStarter that's currently running & about what the future holds.

Seven, The Days Long Gone Review - Immersive & Mysterious

If someone were to ask me how I would describe Seven: The Days Long Gone, the first project from indie developers IMGN.PRO and Fool’s Theory, I would be hard pressed to give you a concise, clean cut answer. On its surface , Seven is an isometric ARPG, with some great progression and and leveling mechanics. As you dive deeper into the game you discover quickly that it also implements some pretty interesting stealth and tactical combat options.

Xenoblade Chronicles 2 Review

If you’ve been playing your Nintendo Switch as much as I have, you’re probably already eagerly awaiting any new epic RPG that comes out. We’ve had Breath of the Wild, we got Skyrim, and Disgaea 5, but for many JRPG fans, Xenoblade Chronicles 2 will be the first really exciting release on the Switch. And I’m here to say that it’s been worth the wait for the follow up to the Wii’s original classic. This is our Xenoblade Chronicles 2 review for the Nintendo Switch.
