In this "whenever we feel like it" column, we'll be talking about, reviewing, and previewing all the best and brightest RPGs coming to the market, even if they're not "MMO" in nature.
With The Bard's Tale 4: Barrows Deep (BT4), developer inXile Entertainment (original developer of the 2004 Bard's Tale spinoff) is bringing us more than just a remaster of the original trilogy, we are getting a true sequel. Originally funded through a Kickstarter campaign back in 2015, the Backer Beta was released on July 12. So let's take a quick look at what the game has in store for us.
When I first reported on Shining Resonance Refrain over at Gamespace.com, it was something of a revelation to me. The hype that so many of my friends and colleagues had built up around the game seemed well placed after I got hands on the Nintendo Switch demo. Now, we can finally follow Kirita, Sonia, and Yuma on the rest of their journey as Shining Resonance refrain launches on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and PC.
When The Banner Saga 3 launches on July 24th, it will bring the epic and well-respected trilogy to an end. We had the opportunity to speak to the good folks at Stoic to find out how it feels to reach the trilogy's conclusion and what may be next for the highly-acclaimed studio.
I recently got the opportunity to test out a new, open-world, narrative-driven RPG/Survival game called Smoke and Sacrifice and have been really enjoying my time in the game. If you’re a fan of games that don’t hold your hand, feeling like the underdog that rises above, gorgeous graphics and “Don’t Starve”-like gameplay then I suggest you check out our review.
With Pathfinder: Kingmaker already in beta, the release of a brand new CRPG is surely imminent. After we dipped into Golarion for the first time, I had a chance to sit down and talk to Owlcat Games Creative Director, Alexander Mishulin, about the bringing this iconic table top game into the digital age.
Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire launches today, the next in an ever-growing line of masterful cRPGs. Obsidian Entertainment has brought gamers a new cRPG that both expands the Pillars universe and provides fans with exciting new ways to play this most-beloved genre. Deadfire offers proof that epic single-player games are worth making despite what some in the industry have said to the contrary.
We have just been given another version of this game, one that involves strapping on a full headset and diving into the newly charted realm of Virtual Reality. Skyrim VR is available on HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, and Windows Mixed Reality, though our review came from the HTC Vive.
A lot of JRPG fans lament to this day that the ultra popular Final Fantasy XV was more action RPG than traditional turn-based affair. Many gamers long for the days when the FF series was more about limit breaks and menu surfing than four bros on a journey in their kickass car. For them, Square Enix is bringing the first mainline game in the Dragon Quest series stateside since 2010.
It doesn’t sound like a cross between simulation games and Banner Saga-styled strategy RPGs would go over well, but in CCCP’s Dead in Vinland, that’s exactly the case. Your family is driven from their viking homestead by war and invaders only to have your ship sink and find yourselves washed up on a hostile island. It’s a complex, strategic, and heartfelt story of a family and a people’s will to survive.
Rob’s back after a full week with Ni no Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom. Did he enjoy his time in the Heartlands? Read on to find out.
I dove into Ni no Kuni II with few expectations. While the first game was well received I did not play it. So while I'm hopeful this second entry into the franchise will be good I do not come attached with any preconceived notions.
As someone who has never played a Yakuza game until now, I was initially tentative in picking up Yakuza 6: The Song of Life to review. A game with such a storied and beloved history felt like something a newcomer such as myself just couldn’t navigate. Yet within the first hour I was hooked.

Vermintide takes place in the Warhammer universe. For those unfamiliar, it is a dark place full of death and disease. Plague rats and their larger cousins the Skaven rule the sewers of the human cities killing anything that goes down there. Vermintide 2 takes you out of the sewers and sometimes into the wildlands around the city. You have choices of up to fifteen heroes in this co-op fighter.
