One of the first successful MMOs for children, Disney's Club Penguin, will be closing for good on March 29th. The game has been in service since 2005 with nearly 200M registered users by 2013. Starting February 1st, players will be able to take part in celebratory activities including the lifting of membership and a series of activities hinted at by a picture on the announcement page.
Club Penguin players will have an opportunity to donate to charity when the fifth annual "Coins for Change" campaign launches on December 15th. Last year's campaign saw over three million players participate in special activities that ended up netting a significant charitable donation made on their behalf by Disney.
Club Penguin devs have released a new video championing kids' giving over the holidays. During the "Coins for Change" campaign, players were encouraged to donate virtual coins that would later see tangible giving in the form of a million dollars split among three charities. Players were given a list of charities to choose from and voting netted the lucky charitable recipients.
From December 17th-27th, Club Penguin players are being given the opportunity to donate virtual coins earned through playing mini-games. Players will be able to select the charity to which they'd like to donate and after the event ends, Disney will divide a million dollars between Warchild, Free the Children, Wildlife Conservation Network, Partners in Health, Children's Surgical Centre, and Rare. Last year, players donated over four billion virtual coins.
