The Becoming: The Trials of Nuada

When we began the design process for Camelot Unchained™, we planned on putting out a lot of potential races for our backers to look at and comment upon during the early development of the game. Part of this process involves the Becoming™ tales that have served as the origin stories for some of them. As this “race cycle” comes to an end, the final story evolved from being a relatively simple tale to a seven-part cliffhanger-style one.

Each time I thought I was going to wrap it up, a new story line/plot device came into my head, and well, off I went to add it. As a result, the storylin features some inter-realm cooperation, more backstory about the time before the three brothers began their internecine war, and most importantly, a lot of new information about The Depths™.

There is also the usual amount of playful teasing and hints plus lots of movie references/puns as well as the first mention of one of the most important cities in the history of our world. All told, this story is much more than the tale of how one race came into being; it is an account of the world before its second breaking.

This Becoming tale centers on Nuadha Airgetlám (Nuada of the Silver Hand/Silver Arm). He is one of the most important figures in the tales of the Tuatha De Danann, being both the son of Danu, (the goddess from whom the name Tuatha De Danann is derived), and the first king of his people.

Unlike the traditional portrayal of him as a god, our version is a very skilled mortal (at least by the standards of our game), but a very flawed one. Nuada was considered a powerful being, but even in the original legends, he is brought low during two battles, those of Maige Tuired.  In our world, So, his tale serves both the origin story for a race and but also as a cautionary one for the inhabitants of the world of Camelot Unchained. As in most of these tales, I have taken the original folklore and greatly altered it to fit the world we are creating.

As the story begins, we see some of his folly and its immediate consequences.  I hope you enjoy Part I of “The Becoming: The Trials of Nuada.”
