The latest Camelot Unchained newsletter has been published that contains a fascinating section and stream video about whether or not gear contains stats and how it affects the power of any given item. The short answer is that weapon and armor do indeed have stats and that there are a variety of qualities for gear that can be affected by such things as the materials from which it is crafted, the skill of the crafter, etc.
There will be some advantages to better swords, but they are not going to be tremendously huge, at least not in terms of damage output and things like that. They will have advantages more in the range of things like durability. “Actually, I only have to replace my sword at way longer intervals than you do.” Whereas when you are new players you are saying, “This sword isn't very good, I keep wearing out my sword and keep getting new ones, but they are also fairly cheap because I am a new character and don’t have very much money.” So it’s a convenience thing more than it is anything else.
