sometimes, in the places you least expect, you find hints of the gods' humor.  part of the beauty of istaria is the need to look around closely.

the most current example of this can be found here.  enjoy!

dalimond town marshal quest - slate for brains, part 1

today, we will be exploring the 'slate for brains' quest.  the quest itself is pretty straight forward; however, it requires an attunement, so i figure might as well get attunement to as many of the settlements as i can while i am about it.  so, you get to come along for the run!

so, let's get started by approaching drugan and greeting the town marshal.  from the quest list, choose and accept the slate adventure.  drugan will give you some details, backed up with your quest journal.

for some reason that escapes me at the moment, i chose to start the journey from the bristugo ports.  if you use the dalimond ports, you will see the same info and have to use the same destination, so all further info is the same for either starting point.

at the outgoing port, you will see that a good portion (if not all) of the dalimond ports are unavailable - including slate crest.  the closest 2 free portals available are izzon crest and south march.  either one is good, altho i chose izzon crest.

looking at the map, you will see that izzon crest is east of slate crest, but most of the settlements are west of it.  we will be heading to the first settlement of the tour, pleasant canyon.  an aside, on the screenie, the brown area between slate crest and the western settlements is the slate field with the gols we need to hunt.

anyhoo, you have landed in izzon crest.  before we head down the west dirt road, you want to get used to finding the guard posts in each settlement - in the future as well as for this tour.  you have prolly noticed that i am far from attuned to every destination, and it is usually the militia that gives out attunements.  so, even tho he doesn't have an attunement for us, say hi to izzon crest's private bryne johanns.

once you have made the private's acquintance, head westerly on the road until it meets the paved main road.  skirt both the reed lake and the swamp area (particularly the swamp, that is trouble you just don't need right now), and stay on teh paved road until you reach the fabric workstation.  not too far down the road from the workstation, turn off on the dirt road on your left, heading southwesterly.

stay on the road, crossing the cute bridge and wending thru the kenaf field, until you reach the fork in the road.  take the west fork thru the pass, at which point you will be in pleasant canyon proper - but still a ways to go!

at the exit of the pass, you will see the road continue thru some trees.  go down this road until you see the portal - and the green dragon standing near it.  this is noble angenehm and he will attune you to pleasant canyon when you greet him and choose his only quest.  accept the attunement and voila!  you can now port to pleasant canyon as you desire.

next stop on the tour is the community of heart, not too far north of pleasant canyon.  go thru the hills just north of angenehm to start the easy run.  up the hill and run thru the slate field, staying on a generally northwesterly course.  you will come to a small valley - jump off the edge and run up the hill on the other side.  at this point, you are in lower heart.  follow the road up the hill, as it winds thru the trees.  at the top of the rise, you will see a camp and guard post thru the trees.  go past the portal to the guard post, and find sergeant nansi illos.  the human female is a bit surly, but if you accept the quest, she will attune you to the settlement.

that's enough for now, i think.  soon, i will continue both the tour and the main reason we are here, the slate golem hunt.  join me again soon, won't you?  you can find the attunement album here.

dalimond town marshal quest - bring back my honor

today, we will explore drugan's quest called 'bring back my honor'.  it's a pretty straightforward adventure, so let's get to it!

approach the dalimond town marshal and greet him to access the quest list.  choose the honor quest and accept it.  take in the details, using both drugan's instruction and your quest journal.

the easiest place to hunt the leafy oastics, to my mind, is abandoned island.  so, head for the portals and choose the ai destination.  when you hit the incoming pad, you want to take the road passing the fabric workstation aka the west road.  keep running down this road, past the wood workstation and thru the ruxus territory, continuing on until you reach the west end of the elm forest.  it is here that the oastics roam.

before i began my hunt, since i had gone to all the trouble to fetch both my crossbow and the proper skewl to use it, i had to equip my beautiful - and god made (a story for another time) - crossbow.  i like to hotkey my weapons and tools (so much easier to do now that the powers that be gave the players more hotkey bars) i am currently using, so it was just a matter of hitting the proper hotkey.  as the xbow is a two handed weapon, both my hammer and shield were unequipped at the same time.  hotkeys make switching between ranged and melee weapons so much easier!!  and don't i look lovely carrying it?

and now, to use it!  this area is loaded with oastics, from the road to the shore.  just pick one, draw it with your ranged attack, then switch to melee attacks when the critter gets close.  they aren't too very tough, so a solo player should be able to draw and attack easily - they will join in a fight, but they don't otherwise aggro very hard.  a party of low levels should be able to handle this task with no problem, and a babysitter who heals/watches your back is icing, but not the cake.  once you have killed an oastic, do not forget to loot it, as oastics have several technique resources as well as trophies to sell.

relatively shortly, you will have a field of dead and your journal is telling you it is time to head back to dalimond.  recall back to the human city (i don't have to remind you to bind to the city's shrine as your first move, do i?  that should be a given.....), run the short distance to drugan's patrol, regreet him, and get your reward for your hard work.

that wasn't so hard, now, was it?  i haven't decided which quest i will do next - one is easy and the other involves an attunement tour (advance warning - it will be a two parter) - so i imagine the decision will be based on how much time i have to post.  come back soon to discover what the outcome is!

dalimond town marshal quest - tower of abbathes

okay, here we go!  this will be my first post with the screenies linking to imgur.  i have done an informal test, and i hope we will have the same experience with it as we did with photobucket, before they went all pissy.  please do leave any comments - if imgur is unsatisfactory, i will continue to look for a better place to put all this wonder.

so, let's get to it, shall we?  approach drugan on his patrol and greet him, as you would normally.  accept the 'tower of abbathes' quest, and get the details.  check your quest journal as well.

drugan tells you to go to dalimond ridge, and we already know we can find ish'kuk on the mountaintop of abandoned isle, but there is one more place we can go to get this quest done.  that is the mountain on scorpion island.  as one of the purposes of this blog is to introduce you to the world i love, i decided to show you some of scorpion isle.

first thing we need to do, of course, is get there.  go to the left hand portal and scroll down to the scorpion island: darvus destination.  when you hit the pad, turn in a generally southwesterly direction and start your run.  just over the rise, you will see a very lovely plot - owned by my friend thumblina.  take a moment to admire the excellent work, then start your run again.  pass thru the kenaf field and onto the lake shore.  jog south toward the cliff you see in the distance.

as you get closer, you will see a road running thru two hillls.  just after the pass, you will need to turn to your right to notice another dirt road heading up the cliffside.  stay on this winding path as it continues up the mountain, turning into a frosty climb, albeit a shortish one.  very soon you will reach the top of the mountain.

at the top, if you look to your left, you will see packs of winter wolves roaming the icy terrain.  yes, they will count toward the 'warmth of wolves' quest, should you decide to take it (or take it again).  you might not have too much time to look, tho, as to your right is the very boundary of the ish'kuk territory.  if you get into trouble - and you very well might - you can run for the snow arch over the road.  if you go under it, the ish'kuk usually turn back in defeat.  not always, tho, so caution is required even then.

you will have no problems finding ish'kuks to write in the ded book - they are legion here in their territory - which extends to both side of the northern end of the frozen lake.  the lake itself is swarming with frost beets, so it is not a good idea to go exploring there without backup.  in fact, a babysitter is a good idea for this quest, as a general rule.

ogres like to fight, and the cold ones are no different.  they have a fairly short aggro range, and love to gang up on a victim.  they are pretty tough, individually, and can give even a fairly high level a moment of pause when they attack en masse.  they also reapawn quite fast - more than once i had one or two respawn on top of me and immediately start attacking, which is why a babysitter comes in handy.  looting the bodies also makes them respawn quicker, as well as providing valuable loot.  keep plugging away - checking your journal for the count - until you have the required 20 ish'kuk to satisfy drugan.  i certainly hope you have bound to the dalimond shrine for a quick getaway.

once back in town, find the town marshal and speak to him to get your rewards for a job well done.

now, you may remember that i fetched my excellent crossbow from storage with the intention of using it for drawing purposes.  you may also remember that i was planning to switching to warrior, as clerics cannot use crossbows.  the sharp eyed amongst you may have noticed that i did not draw the ish'kuk to me.  this is because i neglected to switch skewls, which i remembered at a most inconvenient time.  therefore, as soon as i finished the quest, i headed to grace addlier, the dalimond warrior trainer.  she can be found in the building closest to the march (main) gate, sharing the training area with other trainers of a fighting bent.  from drugan's location, head directly south toward the walled area.  slip thru the entrance and find the good sargent in the middle building.  appraoch and greet grace, and choose the 'become a warrior' option.  if you need beginner equipment, what she offers is better than nothing, but hopefully you have friends who can make or gift you with better.  otherwise, you are now a warrior of the last level you had when you switched skewls.

well, that was fun, don't you think?  i hope you will join me again next time for more adventure!  see you then.

addendum:   the image links open in the same tab for me.  so, i will post the link for the relevant post album at the end of each post.  that way, you can open the album in a separate tab, if desired.  imgur allows me to easily title the screenies, so i can give an idea of where that particular screenie goes in the post.
