part 2 of winter event finale

when last we left our winter tale, the young gnome zebrie and the tinkering citizens of new rachival had constructed the telescope.  unfortunately, there was still something missing.......

before she could explain further, the city was attacked by all manner of ice critters.  while it was a mighty battle and i fought valiantly, i was written in the ded book as you can see, i wasn't the only one).  this also caused a mighty ctd, which is why there is a gap in the event log detailing the second task.

as a naka, i couldn't even help gather materials for this task of dragon crafting, so i stayed behind in new rach to assist in defense.  we were tested a bit while waiting, but nothing we couldn't swiftly handle.  so swiftly, in fact, that some of us severely thinned the numbers of desert wolves inhabiting the city environs.

eventually, the required materials were gathered, created, and traded.  the telescope was improved and zebrie found the stars.  however, another problem presented!  the gnome forgot papyrus and ink to draw the starchart!  a problem quickly solved, as someone is always carrying papyrus and squid in their pockets.  i mean, don't you?

once the starchart is drawn, the venerable dragon karvanoth decides we must surround ourselves with the enemy to defeat the enemy.  therefore, we all made our various ways to the doubly frozen suburb of mahagra - the mining town of summit.  i recalled to bristugo, then accessed the settlement portal, using the summit destination, of course.  this involved seeing several splash screens, if course - some funny, some informative, but every one totes useful.

of course, some of us could fly and some of us knew quicker ways to get around than others, so a goodly few of us had to wait for the others.  we all got as comfortable as we could while waiting for karvanoth to gather us for the coming events.  soon enough, the dragon called us to order and gave us our 4th task, a dual one.  some of the group went off to hunt ice critters for components and trophies, some to craft the frozen orbs, and some of us stayed behind.  a good thing too, as we were attacked mightly - not surprising, as we were in the heart of eternal winter!

finally, all the requested items were assembled, but there is still something missing.....  the item was quickly handed over, however, and the ancient dragon determined that the final phase of the battle would take place at the portal of ice, deep in the heart of the frozen north.

 

as the next, and last, post about the winter event finale is very screenie intensive and therefore, likely to be long, we will cover it next time.  i hope you come back to find out how it all ends!  see you then.

despite the real world trying its best, i made it to the finale!!  this is gonna take at least 2 posts to cover, prolly more like 3, but i hope i can give you a taste of the fun!

the fun was scheduled to start at 3pm est, so i logged in about 2:30 or so.  good thing, too, because i discovered i was not attuned to new rachival, where the festivities were to start.

there was apparently an auto attune to new rach for those level 20 and under, but i was way out of that league.  it is only a fairly short run, but it is thru some dangerous territory for lower levels.  from bristugo, take the main city portal to tazoon.  once there, head out of the north gate and take the westerly road.  i paused for a minute to throw on some buffs and cast swift feet, because i didn't want to be slowed down by anything i might come across.  stay on the road while you run thru the northern border of the barasavian desert - keep an eye out for wolves - and you will know you are close when you start to see signs of gnomish craftsmanship.  head up the rise and find bixben next to the front gate.

the gnome captain stands ready to attune you to his city.  you need to speak to him to access the attunement quest.  click the link and accept the quest.  bixben doesn't have anything else to say, but you will notice your chat log has updated.

once i attuned, i still had time to join the event chat channel (where all instructions and such would be displayed by the devs roleplaying the event) and have a look around.  it was hard to find my fellow bipeds in the midst of the ocean of dragons, but we were there!  i was overjoyed to see my dear friend lovwyrm was there to greet me!  of course, i had to take a selfie or two!

at the appointed time, the event began.  our guides on the first part of the adventure were karvanoth, an elder ancient dragon; and zebrie, a young female gnome.  the game commenced when zebrie burst into the fray and began to tell the tale of how the dangerous winter laying too long on the land can be broken.

the young gnome proposed building a telescope, a very large one.  to do so, she would need some parts.  therefore, she gave us our first task.  i had some levels in enchanter, so i when to the vault and got my essence crafting tools, stopped off quickly in dalimond to switch from fitter to enchanter and went to brist to head to the isle of wisps.  taking the guild: sakon destination at the guild portal, i headed west once i landed, then i crossed the bridge to the island.

the island of wisps is called that because, well, it's covered in wisps and wisp residue.  dims, pales, and glowing, to be precise.  i set about harvesting residue and began making the required sources.  when i had made about 65, i headed back to new rach to trade them to zebrie.  we were kept updated on what had already been completed, so we didn't work at cross purposes.  eventually, all the need components were assembled, and the telescope quickly followed!

 

and that is about all i have time to relate for now.  i promise to get back to the fun in a couple days - i promise that some action is on the way!  see you soon

that's right, kiddies!!  the winter event is drawing to a close!  the great and good gods of istaria have decreed a suitable event for the finale!  on saturday the 18th, there will be something big happening on my home shard of blight.  i will try to get there in time to at least get some screenies, but that's gonna be a busy day for me (of course), so i might not get to take part in the whole thing.  you can, tho!  if you don't already play the game, see if you can create a free character on blight (i don't think you can, but it's worth a try).  if you do play, you have until 3pm est tomorrow to get your live shard character into the queue for copy to blight.

until whatever happens happens, here is the story that accompanies the above banner:

Wind whips through nearly every city in Istaria as the world plummets into an icy spiral of death. Plants wither away and spring may never be a possibility. Snow thick enough to swallow up an ancient drifts against Kion’s walls and the dragons of Dralk huddle around the lava pools for warmth. Even the Helian are welcome in Dralk during these dark times, the Schism cooling with the freezing weather and the ancient loyalty between Dragonkind sparking up.

However, hope is not lost; multiple councils of the most powerful mages have been pulled together, desperately trying to find the source. The eldest mages of Ice magic have been brought to Tazoon for testing and trials.

Two months into this horrid cold, a discovery is made; the orbit of the Realm of Ice is closer than ever, as discovered by the gnomish astronomers in New Rachival. With the help of a daring dragon, a gnomish piece ofequipment was flown above the swirling clouds to make a detailed map of the stars hidden by the cloak ofclouds around the world.

Intently studied, this chart proved the orbit of the Realm of Ice and laid the groundwork for discovering possible causes and solutions. At this round table of discussion, the dragon who flew above the clouds finally spoke for the first time after his mission, his wings tattered and blue in places where they were frostbitten from the extreme cold.

“I’m afraid to say, naka’duskael,” he hissed, his voice raw from breathing in ice crystals for hours. “That you shouldn’t look for an inanimate or natural cause to this. Realms do not connect on their own; the great Dragon Drulkar had to step into the Prime through the Gate of Embers, which provided a magical connection otherwise not normal.”

Devolving into a coughing fit, the dragon slouched over, tired and weary. “I was not alone in that sky; something else was there, weaving the icy magic that created those clouds. We have never stepped foot in the Realm of Ice, but I fear what may step out of it.”

On February 18th, 2017 at 03:00pm EST, a finale event for the Hours of Frost will be hosted on the Blight server. This is 9:00pm CEST and 12:00pm PST. Please be aware of these following points:
 

  • Since this event is on Blight, copy your characters prior to its start. We will run a force-copy 24 hours before the event starts. Please queue your characters to copy before the 17th at 03:00pm EST.
  • As per last year, any rewards given out from this event will also be given on the live servers. Please contact your server’s event GM if you are missed out. Rewards will likely appear in your vault and may stack with existing items, so please keep careful inventory so no one gets doubled up.
  • Following feedback from last year’s Halloween event, the Event channel has been converted to a joinable GM-write-only channel. This means that everyone can join it, but only GMs can write in it.Join the event channel. Any dialogue between characters and instructions will be written here. If you do not join, you will be utterly lost.
  • We plan to involve characters of all tiers into this event, but the end boss will be nearly impossible for anything under level ninety to kill. Do not be afraid to join if you are not max level!
  • The event will start in New Rachival. Please gather at the landing pad there and keep a careful eye out for the event GMPCs for location changes.


 

There is expected to be a larger than normal number of players in one area. Please consider reducing your view distance and/or adjusting your graphics settings to ensure a smooth play experience.

After the halloween event, many optimizations were made both to the Blight server and the client to help ensure better client- and server-side performance. If your computer can handle running debug logs with so much happening, please do so and send them in afterwards via a ticket. It may prove helpful to our technical developers to have such a legitimate stress-test.

sslanis town marshal quests - a skulk issue

well, time to get back to the bizniz at hand!  when last we left the town marshal quests, i had shown you how to get to the areas we will visit for the first 3 adventures.  today, we will use some of that knowledge!

we begin, as always, by speaking to ssoren, on the porch of the main fort of sslanis.  choose the 'a skulk issue' from the choice of several.  accept the quest, get more info, and check your quest journal.

use the previous posts to get to the sable shores area - for today, specifically the woodworking station.  once there, head around the back of the wws, toward the big live tree.  when you reach it, you should see the next landmark - a large blighted tree.  you will also start meeting hunting parties of skulks about this time.

a word about skulks.  as with all town marshal quests, these critters are a great challenge for low levels to solo.  they aggro massively.  you WILL need a nice sized (and hopefully varied) group or a capable babysitter.

deal with the outriders as you see fit (don't forget to loot!), but eventually you will need to move around the hill next to the blighted tree and skirt the lake (take a moment to watch the airfish swim above the water) and enter the skulk village to take on the rest.  if you are quick and careful, you will soon have your required 20 skulks written in the ded book.  if you are going to take the long way, head back to the wws and cross the bridge.  my advice is to bind to the sslanis shrine before leaving the city and recall back.  find ssoren and speak to it again to get your reward.
