A New Graphics Engine?! *Yawn*
If you read you no doubt know that Funcom has announced that they are going to use the graphics engine from the Conan MMOG to power the visuals in Anarchy Online.
I don't know about you, but a graphics update won't spark my interest in any game if the gameplay isn't there first. If all a game needs to be a smash hit are shiny visuals, then why hasn't Vanguard taken over the MMOG world? Not many people would accuse WoW of having cutting-edge graphics, but it somehow manages to score millions of subscribers. Good looks help, but gameplay is king, always.
If you ask me, the demo video that showcased the new graphics wasn't that impressive. You had the same old world but with fancy lighting and water effects. Big deal. The geometries still looked low-poly, textures were still bad, and the design was still needlessly full of dead space. You can paint an old car, but underneath its still an old car. We'll give Funcom the benefit of the doubt and assume that they'll revamp their zones later on.
In any event, props to Funcom for updating an old game. I hope that EVE and now AO have started a trend in MMORPGs, because there are games out there that are actually good that could use a graphical overhaul.

It mite be the case that AO is a older game but its mechanics by and far are more complex then many of its competitors. Frankly its nice to see its graphics match its core mechanics. Albeit I think the graphics engine needs a little more work. It seemed to me like there trying to recycle to much old artwork. Anyways I'll definitely being go back to AO with the update. I played it for 3 years. Itll be nice to be back in my old stomping grounds.

The people who are excited about the engine update are old AO veterans. Basically the people that know the quality of the old game. The directX 7 game can't compete with the eye candy of today's games. I can't recommend this game to my friends that are used to different quality of graphics in the same way I can't recommend playing the single player Ultimas. There is a sentimental value that comes along with the quality of the old game.

The gameplay is there, you just need to actually play the game OP. Your post would be valid if the game was a dog. The thing is, how many companies would dump money on a dog, just think about it for a second.

This game is actually good (surprise). It may not be your cup of tea, but I am glad Funcom is spending money to update the engine.

I just recently partook on the froob deal(before i knew they were planning to upgrade graphics). To try out one of the most well known mmorpg names. No harm to you OP, but you have no idea what your talking about. I don't even know about half of this game, and it already has more to offer in terms of gameplay than any other game I have played (which is quite a bit). The only reason that i did not want to upgrade and subscribe was mainly because I do not want to pay a monthly fee right now (job isn't going quite so well, too slow to keep me working). And a graphics upgrade will do just that, make me want to fork over the money i really shouldn't spend every month to play the whole full game with much much better quality(I do realize that froobs will be able to use the upgrade, but i'd rather play the entire game instead of  what the froobs have now).  Bash the gameplay all you want though. It being around for as long as it has is a testament to it's gameplay. Especially many froobs become fully updated paying players.

To all the, "If you actually played, OP" comments. Yeah, I played, and I didn't like it. Its great if you do, but that doesn't mean that I have to like it as well. Thanks for reading.

I've played it too, and didn't like the gameplay, the setting, the story, the classes, the abilities, the skills, the races, the instances ... shall I go on?

Lots of people played this game and did not like it.  It is ridiculous that anyone should take a superior attitude about liking AO, considering it is now free to play.

TesterNGS it's just that you wrote that article in a way that stated the fact that, officially AO dont have a good gameplay. That is probably why so many people reacted and commented in the way they did.

You should have wrote the article from a more personal viewpoint.

I see what you're saying, Davod, but it is a "personal" blog after all. Kind of implied that I don't speak for everyone, but I'll keep your advice in mind.

Might wanna check your facts in the OP. It is NOT the AoC engine. It is AOs' engine being upgraded to dx9. The AoC engine, while based on AOs', is not backwards compatible.

Also, that is the alpha version shown, which means they have only done environmental changes THIS FAR, not that they are only doing those and nothing more.

And "dead space"? Sorry, maybe you don't like a large world that is there to be explored, but some of us do. Not everyone only follows a pre-made plan of where to go next.

And considering the game has lasted 7 years already, with many more years planned to follow, I'd say the gameplay must have something going for it, no? Sorry there's no quest line from 1-220 with big arrows to guide you through the game. Not everyone wants WoW.

I want to apologise, I didn't mean to sound so offensive (if I did). It's just that the comment on "... there are games out there that are actually good ..." triggered a negative vibe on me. Of course there are old games out there that are good. That doesn't mean that this isn't one of them.

I'll go as far as to say that if AO was updated to AoC graphics quality (keeping the current game qualities as is), I would be playing AO, not AoC. I'm tired of high and low fantasy settings and would like to play on a sci-fi world again (as opposed to an online game).

Again my apologies.
