Lately I have been thinking, reading, and hearing to others talk about mmos, but after a few thoughtful mind sessions, I have to say that I am like Saint Thomas, The one that said once: "I have to see it! To believe it!" I know there is a big story behind that, but if u ask me, some people have a big tendency to be like that, and others dont.

Of course they have their reasons to be like that, but I am starting to notice that people believe in mmos developers  with such a blindness, they take developers words like a command from god, they hype up from devs comments or trailers, pictures, media, other friends hyping, and they start hyping up at the same moment for weeks or months.

"Let me clear up something, by hype, what I used to understand is not the normal feeling or emotion of wishingsomething new or looking to get entertained, or planing to buy something. By Hype I mean, THE CONSTANT DROOLING OVER SOMETHING! Like worshiping something"

The media and the press have such a power to make people talk about a game, they memorize every detail and every word that one of the developers of their game said on a video podcast, at some point is amazing how can this marketing department can put together all this people into their knees asking for a game... lol... I have to admit, Nicely done!!!!... Well, Right, Fast, No screwups!!!

But the real question is:

Can we believe all this marketing, and press, should we get our hypes up. Like in Warhammer, TR, AION, and a few others????

You are free to get into your own conclusions, really... But! if u ask me.. the answer is a Full NO!

Whatever the answer you people decide to give to the above question is up to you, I will guess that such an answer will have some reasons to be like that, or maybe not, but the point is...

Why I am like..... I have to see it! To believe it! or in other words, If I don't see it, I don't believe it!

Well normally people believe in others when they trust the other party, but when the other side, like your girlfriend, "excuse me, I mean developers" betray such trust, people stop taking each word of them as true, and I did... 

In the past recent years, I have seen some strange game launches followed by a lot of corporate drama, and the famous developer podcast sentence "We are going to release this game and then add X thing later on" goes to hell!

The game get released and the X thing never appear, or if they do, is going to be so overdue that the big mass of people that hyped their game, is not against them, mocking them for failed promises...

Or what about a very recent one, the game got release and tons of things showed on game footage trailers through the years arent in the game, what is sad is that the game is low on content, and after some months after release, they havent released a meaningful patch at all.

Also you need to add the developers that start reHyping, with new trailers about upcoming content, but when people ask when!!!! they start giving ambiguous answers like coming soon or somewhere this year or the next... believe me I have seen those 3...

Some others create hype hype hype around X aspect of the game, but when people play the game, it turns that is like a lollipop but instead of sweet chocolate, is made from soil covered by a very thin surface of candy at best....

I have seen so many things that kill games, and yes i know developing games is hard, takes time and cost a truck of money and publishers are a bit bitchy sometimes... but plz developers, dont hype up people, and people plz... stop getting hyped...

Sup all... I was reading around some articles related to economy, stocks and all that stuff in that line, those articles are kinda easy to come by in msn, yahoo, even google, considering the economical situation right now in the world, talking about economics seems to be the new swing...

But let me tell you something, right now I am not really going to analyze world economics, lol, the only reason for me to write down this entry is because I notice the old myth that doesnt want to die, stills around shaping peoples minds in a wrong way... which myth you will ask, well let me put it into the next formula using WoW subscription rates as one example...

(15 dollars)  (11,000,000 subs) = 165,000,000 dollars, or bucks!

People take that as a whole and solely true!!!!!

But let me tell you something, that is absolutely wrong, that is kids thinking, or domestic thinking, the one you do at home. In a more bigger corporate level, things work differently, for the worst of the corporation and for the better of the government. lol!!!

WoW claims to have 11m subs, and let me explain something I just figured out, (with some simplification at some extent), from those 11m subs, the average payment is 14 bucks, not 15, why? Because there is 3 subscription types in the credit card options 15 per month, 14, for 3months , and 13 for 6 months.

(to have one exact number or average payment per subscription, blizzard will need to release those numbers, and I dont think they will give me those numbers to me, but in general this number seems kinda logical)

Now the first step in the equation is

(14 bucks) (11,000,000 subs) = 154,000,000  

here we have the first down,  11 million dolars arent lost,   they never existed at all

the next step will be... TAX!!! (also simplified because there is deductibles, liabilities and such, not that is that great considering blizzard is just a company of entertainment lol, also tax % are averages, as they change each year in the tax rate tables)

154,000,000 - 8.75% City Tax  = 140,525,000  (US will leech some blood out of you)

140,525,000 - 8.84% State Tax = 128,102,590

128,102,590 - 38% Federal Tax = 79,423,605 dollars!


154,000,000 - 2% Credit Card, and bank transactions fee, calculated at the time of the 14 dollars transaction (average number too) = 3,080,000

79,423,605 - 3,080,000 = 76,343,605

$76,343,605 / 11,000,000 =  $6.94 per sub

The numbers are raw, and a bunch of numbers are averages, based on information that runs around and not official one, not to mention that some things are rounded and the tax table I use for this was the 2008 one. But in general you got an idea of the picture around, not the old MYTH!!!!

In general blizzard doesnt take the 15 dollars or 14 dollars home per sub... after all the taxes and everything, they only get half of that... or less!

When I was in school, some crazy teacher told us that through millions of years species evolve into newer more stronger and clever ones that adapt to changes in the environment, for years and years, I took that teacher as a crazyman and never really manage to fit into my head the idea of millions of years and all that BS...



Why I said this... is simple, Human Behavior in the general society, and the ones who adapt, survive, and the ones that dont, they simply die and fall extinct... and

MMOS are not adapting to the change! Or People isnt adapting to it!

Maybe the new Mix doesnt go well!

But instead of blaming the mmos, and say what a lot of people already said, I start looking at the other side of the working formula.... The other side is the players, the society of people in RL that decide to get into the MMO world and chill around, kick some mob axx, and so forth.

To make things short I am going straight to the point.

1. People attitude toward life is changing, the new economical pressures, social changes, technology and everything that affects the human perception of their outer world is changing, more and more people see a Dystopia coming... and the old days of the American Dream seem to be gone in water. Takes makes people cranky, and cynical, more sceptical and sensitive and less tolerance to stuff they dont like...

2. Each day I see less and less people are calling for a challenge, now more and more people is all about get in, grab some loot, and in a few minutes fell the joy of getting badass, and mmos fail at that!!  MMOS add the so called Grinding, and lets put it straight here, Grinding if u ask me is the repetition of a boring action.. thats it!!!! Looks like this years, there is no grind proof people any longer... The threads and complains about subscription drops are clear in some places, too much grind...

3. People minds want the so called novelty feeling, seems to be the only happiness for some, and for that reason they want mmos, with tons of content, but it seems imposible to developers to get that much... But people dont care and want novelty in their heads, so maybe the new motto of mmos is:     "Get into the game for the free month, then keep moving forward" Is not that all the developers did something wrong, they do what they can with their limited time, and money, but people want more than what is posible, and they coupe in their possible ways, get a new game and keep hoping... Another reason for the quits all around in games...

4. Hype Hype Hype, I call hype the ATR-72 with a 42 fuel gauge... Why, because if u put the wrong gauge in that plane it will read 1800kg of fuel when u have non... so you take off, get high in sky then stall down to the ground... that is HYPE! If u ask me, games should be announce around 1 to 2 months before release, and before that no word is released ever, not even the game name... Create no hype, is useful to everyone!!! both players and developers, with no hype, you dont crash, you dont get hurt like omg i hyped that game so much and now i dont like it or it sucks, and developers wont get that hatred flame from people all around telling them that they suck, or they dont know what they are doing...

5. People asking for changes in the genre, ok I know, developers wont invest in some high risk project that doesnt have any statistical prove of success at all... but sometimes I just leave the developers alone, they do what they do, MMOS!!!!! and I notice more and more people asking for innovation, but it seems that innovation is a miss-used word, not even I know the meaning, remember people is changing, maybe their language is...

But from what I can dig of that so called Innovation is that, people want changes so radically that will change the genre completely, in such a way that it wont be mmorpg any longer... Example: OMG i am tire of racing games with cars with 4 wheels, lets make them with 4 little props, or rockets, and the race is about transporting X amount of people from point A to point B (sounds like aircraft industry to me)... Other Example: Lets make one FPS without GUNS!!!! We just spit our selves with acid goo... and instead of die from hits... we take different types of damage, and there is some healing goo, a buff goo, and damage goo!!!! Not to mention the debuff goo!

6. Those people simply want something different, not another mmo, but for some reason they keep asking it to have the tag of mmo, have tons of people around... and work in one massive way... They want so many changes with the name of innovation on them, that if those changes are done, is no longer one mmorpg... This makes me remember when I was in school... someone peers told me: "If u want to be cool like a rap guy u ONLY NEED TO CHANGE! your shirt, your pants, your shoes, your belt, your watch, your hairstyle, your backpack, your notebooks, you talk tone" I was like... OMG ONLY THAT!!! that is a whole new me, I better kill my self and start again.. yeah right... I am glad I never took the rap way....

This are only a few of my brainstorming thinking... if u dont understand it well... then thats is sad, I havent been inside the US talking english for at least 15 years... I only play and read around, so dont flame me in the comments because I will understand you... I can asure you that....
