Firefall Revisited [P4] [Final]

Truth be told, I will miss writing about this series, but I think four posts are enough. As promised, this will be the final review of Firefall. Launch has now arrived for the game, and with very little issues with the game, and I am very pleased with Red 5, and how this game has blossomed. If only they could hear my applause. The game has passed one huge hurdle, and now with release being now, it's time to focus on the future of Firefall. Congratulations to Red 5, and their whole team.

Long time readers know, I don't review games in a general way, I talk about what I like and dislike, very rarely using the number score 1-10. Sometimes I feel like that is very misleading, but in this case, I think I can safely use the 1-10 score. At the end I will give you my final score, and why I give it this. There will be two scores though. You will see at the end. Even though I am done writing, I am still going to support, and play Firefall. It's become one of those games for me like Halo was. "Oh, I'm bored with ESO!" Let's play some Firefall" is usually how it goes, and I like it like that. I'm not addicted persay, but when I play, I have fun, it's not a drag, I'm not sitting in que's forever for god knows what reason. Open World MMOFPS, it's what I've dreamed about. I mean sure we got others, but I mean... I guess I'm biased, because I've followed Red 5's Journey. So it's kind of close to me in that sense, that I've been with them since I believe closed beta. I was so excited when I got that invite for the game.

One of the main topics I've been talking about, and I feel that is like most important is how the game plays, and feels.  This is what the game does like probably... 9/10. Very few bugs, most bugs I have encountered are quest not finishing. Meh, it's not as bad as it seems. Only bad part is when I have to redo a quest, that makes me walk a billion miles. (Red 5, please... More glide spots). Yes it's annoying, but we get cool jet packs, and we do run sort of fast, so that's you know a counter to it? Pros and cons to everything right? I mean I've always loved the idea of an MMOFPS, and Firefall does it right for me. Now, I haven't seen/played all the frames, so I can't talk about balance. If I had more experienced with at least the majority of them, I could talk a little about them, but not enough knowledge to give a decent opinion on. Sorry!

Over the course of the years, there have been a lot of bugs in Firefall, like any other game. Though I feel that age has done well with this game. I touched a little on, some things I don't like about 1.0. A lot of people aren't happy with some of the changes, according to Reddit, and other various sites. Majority of people are happy with the direction Firefall is heading in. With the game being also on the steam platform, I hope to see a lot of new players try the game and hopefully like it. I think a lot of people won't end up as lost as I was when I played during closed/open beta. I mean damn was I confused on what to do, thumping confused me, and you know... I read a lot but actually doing it in the game was way different, for me I guess.

I hope they bring a lot of group content to the game. I think the game would do well with high group content. I know raids were added and such. I would love to see a lot more "World" like bosses. For mass amount of people to take down and reap the reward. I always think that would be cool to have. Just 50-100 people going to town on a huge mob or something. I'm curious to know what Red 5 has in store for group content. I mean solo content is always great, but I feel like grouping in Firefall is just a huge blast. I got some buddies interested in the game, and I'm glad the game can run on older PCs. My buddies mostly play consoles, and when I told them to check out FF, I was glad their old computers could run it. I must say, the game looks AMAZING on max settings.

I've gone through some of the problems I have with the game and such, this review can be full of rose tinted glasses, I can't do that. So... I've talked about the good, now what about the bad? I think my biggest issue is Red 5's track record. Now, since the old CEO was voted out. They have made some progress, but I mean that was just one person removed, (May have been more, I can't remember). I'm going to smack them, or you know riot if they screw something up, and they become you know... "Let's do this, nah eff it, let's take this away", and be all over the place. You've gotten to launch, you have a loyal fan base like myself, let's not make us not trust you. You've done good, just don't goof. What I would like to see R5 do, is like post a monthly letter from the developers, and keep us updated on the forums.

You've done a good job being social with us, don't keep the players out of the loop. Even have a AmA now and again. I would just like to know what's on the road for Firefall. Details. Don't become a game where the patches become only cash shop additions. Oh god, please don't be become one of those games. We don't need that. Keep the milestone patches coming.  So track record would be my biggest gripe. In-game? Besides the quest bugs, and sometimes I get some lag, it's not all that bad. I couldn't tell if it was my internet going haywire, or the servers. I still haven't figured that out, but it's happened more than once. I still have a ton of content to explore, but I've played the game more than enough to give a good review of the game.

I'm hoping the game will never be "under the radar" again. I feel like it was for a lot of us who played the game, and then saw "Oh my god, Launch? WTF". I had that moment even when I kept tabs on the game. So with the game being launched, and on Steam. I hope that never happens. It's really a gem in the MMORPG market, and it's Free to play. Whats to lose right? I don't think the game is meant for everyone though. I am biased sort of you could say, because I followed it since it's birth you could say. So the big question now is... What's next for Firefall?

I promised I would score the game is two ways. As an MMO, and as a Free to play MMO. How exactly does that work? I kind of don't know... I just thought of it, and chose to do it with Firefall, so if you're confused... So am I. *Drum roll*. As an MMO I would give this game a 7.9/.10. As a free to play MMORPG I would give a 9/10. So, what's the difference? Firefall brings something new to the market, well.... Newish . Though the gameplay mechanics, are dfiferent with it being a shooter MMO. If you are looking for a core themepark MMORPG, this game may not be for you. Though, as a free to play MMORPG. You get a lot of it for being free, a ton of content, a ton of fun, for free. Once again, if you are confused, so am I.

I could not give it a higher score because I feel like as a core MMORPG, other games do it better, but since it's not and has different game play elements, while bringing in core MMO elements, I feel like the score is fair. You may be thinking, "Well you talked so highly about it, give it a higher score!". I'm trying to be fair here. That was my end goal while writing some of the drafts, is being fair in the final score. Yes yes, it's not a typical review like on and various others. It's my review in my own specific way. I encourage a lot of people just to give the game a try to see if they like it. It's free, there is no harm in trying a game. You might be surprised how much you like it, like I was.

If you would like to discuss this review, or Firefall, please leave a comment below, or tweet me @SirIsaacJewton. It's been a real pleasure writing about Red 5 and Firefall! I hope to see you in-game.

Firefall Revisited [P3]

I remember when I was a kid, I would randomly start playing Pokemon, or bust out the N64 and play some Zelda Ocarina of Time, and play it for a couple of hours, and rinse and repeat daily, until either I got bored with it, or beat it. I think I've beaten Pokemon Yellow 100 times, same as for Zelda. Because they are just so damn fun, and just great overall games. Why do I bring this up? Well, I feel like that principle applies to Firefall. I can pick it up whenever I want, play it for awhile, couple hours at least, and log off. I don't think I could ever play it has like my main focus MMORPG, and that is not a bad thing at all. Maybe, because it's free to play? I'm not really sure to be honest, but it's one of those games that I can pick up daily, and just have some good 'ol fun. A stress reliever in a sense as well. That's what Firefall does 100% for me, it hits me in the fun factor. Straight up, I have had more fun in Firefall, than I had in my entire Paladin's career in FFXIV. So wait... Why Isn't this your main MMORPG?

As much as it strikes me in the fun factor, and the game has been developed for some time, and has lots of room to blossom. It's like this for me. I work, I come home, I eat, I play some Dota 2, then some Firefall, and then raid, and level some of my alts in FFXIV. The game has potential to be my most played MMORPG, but at the current state it is in, it's sort of like how I played when I was a kid, like I said before. It's the fun factor game, it's my stress reliever. It's sort of that happy MMORPG, that I have right now. So, what kinds of things are stopping it from being my full time MMORPG you could say? That's kind of hard to put into perspective. I'm not sure it has to do with game play, as much as it has to do with being myself. I'm leveling 3 frames at the moment, trying to figure out which one I like the best, and which ones fit my style of play the most.

I think the easiest way for my to describe it is like this... It has a lot of content, and the fun factor is there, but alas, I am used to games like FFXIV, or you know World Of Warcraft. I'm used to more of a themepark game, and so I'm more inclined to play FFXIV more than Firefall, because it's what I'm used to. I love both games, almost equally. There are things I dislike about both of them, but now is not the time to talk about FFXIV. It's Firefall's time. Speaking of dislikes, I would like to go over some of things that I dislike about Firefall, and why I do. It's not a big list, so it has that going for it. Haha.

Distance between Ares Missions, and Job Missions. I feel like if my Glider is on CD, or I don't have an LGV available, my quests have more walking than killing or anything like that. I dislike the fact that some of my job board quests, have me walking a far distance, to making kill a few mobs, or get there, then go another long distance to find the quest item, and then ALL the way back. Yes, I know we have jet packs, and we can kill and do things along the way, but I feel like questing is more walking than anything. The game world is beautiful, and I love to look at it all but... I'd like to get my quests done without being to AFK walk, and take a shower and still not be at my quest location.

I'm sure there are much worse things to complain about than that, but that's just one of my few dislikes about the game. I'll talk about one more dislike, which I find funny, and I think a lot of other people will to. My secondary weapon has infinite ammo. Oh god, how could I dislike that? I feel like my secondary weapon at times deals more than my primary, and since I have infinite ammo, why worry about ammo packs? I mean sure, I can easily craft ammo packs, but my secondary... It's infinite! I tease you R5, but I mean like... It takes some of the challenge away from me personally, that's all. Like I said, complaining about infinite ammo? Silly right? Still, nothing really bad to defer me from playing the game, and enjoying every minute of my time during.

Down the road, I would like to see more frames, more challenging ones. I mean some of them are really squishy, and you have to be careful. This is one of the main things I love about Firefall currently... If I want to be a tank? Switch frames! I feel like being a sniper today, or maybe a healer... Switch frames. I just love being able to do that. I touched a little last time about me being worried about Red 5. It would be such a huge turn off in later updates, they released Frames, that are really powerful, or you know whatever, at a steep price. Please Red 5. Never do this. I know you have to make money, but for me, that would such a huge turn off. Because 1. I'm tempted to buy it, and 2.Let's just not go down that road, please? Ahem, but yeah, whatever mood I am feeling frames let's me be that in the game. I think I switched to a sniper frame, and just went around, exploring and sniping random mobs. See, I'm having a blast doing random things. This, this is why I love Firefall.

I think the real question now is... Is Firefall ready to be launched? I know we've been in beta a long time, but is the MMO world ready for it? Are we even ready for it? I know I am, and I am super stoked for it. The game officially launches in 2 days! I couldn't be more happier for the guys over at Red 5. Well, it's 4AM where I am at, I think I will conclude part three here! During the week, I will posting part 4, which will be the final review for Firefall! (Probably after launch the review will be put up). If you enjoyed this post, and want to talk about, please leave a comment below, or tweet me @SirIsaacJewton I hope to see you in Firefall! Cheers!

Note: This post will be shorter than the previous ones. Sorry.

As I was playing Firefall I was thinking to myself, what a ride this has been for Red 5. I think Firefall is officially the game that had the longest Beta stages ever. Do I blame them though? Not really. In many stages of beta the game was not ready for launch. PvP wasn't in, game was missing some coordination. (Thank god for Job Boards, and Story Quests now). Throughout the entire beta process, the game was just missing some core elements. Sure, some people don't like the changes, and there are people like me who adore the changes, and makes Firefall seem like a full fledge MMORPG. I have always thought this game had massive potential, and doing a ton of good for MMOFPS games. There aren't a lot of Open World MMOFPS. Most of them that classify them are room based/lobby based. (I will not name them, sorry).

Back to the topic I was on though, what a ride it's been for Red 5 and the players. Sadly I wasn't one of those players who stuck by thick and thin. I never truly lost hope for the game, but I did stop playing it for a long time, and I mean a long period of time. Coming back and seeing it all being put together, and things are finally looking good for the game. Is it to late for the game though? I don't think so in the slightest. Sure, we have a lot of MMORPGs released, and going to be released soon, that are AAA titles. Firefall isn't the same old game though, sure it has a lot of core elements that most games have, but it's an FPS. Hoorah! I don't think it's going to be the saving grace of the game, because the game plays so smoothly, and It's just a ton of fun. Smooth gameplay, while being fun? I like it. (I'm saying it runs smoothly, because some of the newer games have played, don't run so well...)

Red 5 I think had overall done a good job, despite the fact of their Ex-CEO. (We've all been through this discussion about him). I feel like their time line could have used a lot of work, but I'm sure they had their reasons, and did what they thought was best. Launch is coming up, and it's going to be a blast to play. I just hope they do what's best for the game, and release good content, not broken, terrible content. What I fear the most for the game is that Red 5 will lose what I like about them the most, that they communicate with the players a lot. I hope they continue to listen to players, and value our opinions. I mean, I have a lot of ideas for the game, but I'm no developer, or designer or anything, but what I hope is when players really want something to change, or have something implemented, Red 5 will take a look at it, and be like well... "Either we can balance this, and put it in the game", whatever it may be, I want R5 to seriously look into it.

I know companies are out to make money, and I'm sure Red 5 wants to make a lot of money of this game. I don't want them to become greedy free to play developers. I don't want updates to be cash shop only. I don't want to login and see a patch and read the notes and be like "Nope, no bug fixes, just cash shop additions). That is the one thing I truly fear for this game, is greed. It happens to the best of us. I've been greedy before, and it's cost me a lot. (Not in real life). Yes, they have to make money, I'm sure we will have cash shop additions here and there, but I don't want that to become their main focus. I'd like to know Red 5's state of mind going into launch, and post launch. They have to excited, and maybe afraid at the same time. God knows I would be terrified right now. In closing, it's really awesome to see Firefall officially launching, and becoming what I always hoped it would be.

Since the International is over, part 3 of this series will be up this weekend. (Friday, or Saturday). If you enjoyed reading this post, leave a comment below, or tweet me @SirIsaacJewton I hope to see you in Firefall! Cheers!

Firefall Revisited [P1]

Note: I have done a blog post about Firefall/Red5 Studios. That post was done in January. It is now July. This game is set be finally released... Let's see how far they have come.

Man oh man. Firefall! I have followed this game since it was announced, and I have had mixed reactions to the game. I have liked more than disliked the game, so with Early Access now, and the release soon. Is the game truly ready? Well, after the longest CBT/OBT period I have ever seen for a game, I think the game is ready. I recently logged on to see what has been going on, and I know there was a huge controversy over the wipe, but they did indeed wipe. I have no problem with that, I like the whole fresh feeling with the game, but boy oh boy did I have a huge surprise for me waiting when I logged in. I felt like I was playing a brand new game. A leveling system!? A new UI. (I like the new one better than the older versions). A EPIC, EPIC tutorial. Man, I felt like I was going to war in the tutorial. The music was down right epic, I was under attack, I was defending, and then the tutorial was over, and I entered what was really Firefall.

My biggest pet peeve for this game, was I felt like I had no sense of direction. No true questing, (I guess I am used to themepark games). Well, they tore that pet peeve out the window. A job board!? Story quests!? My god, it was my dream come true. A sense of direction in this game is what I truly needed. It seems to me the new CEO has a good sense of direction. For those of you who did not know, Mark Kern was removed from his position from Red 5 as CEO. I'm not going to go into full details about the situation. The new CEO is James Macauley.

Let's hope he has learned from Mark Kern's terrible mistakes, and makes this game what is was born to be. What exactly is that? Well, have you ever played Jet Force Gemini, for the N64. One of the my favorite N64 games. For some odd reason, Firefall reminds me of playing that game, which is such a good thing. I didn't mind playing CBT/OBT Firefall, I logged on, did my thumping, and random things I did, and logged off. Now with this Firefall, I log on, play, do all these new things, and then log off, WANTING to log back in.

I want to talk about what launch means for Red 5, and Firefall. Red 5 has done a lot of changes, big milestone patches during their testing phases. For the players who have been through many of those, I think you all know what I mean. Firefall either progressed, or did a complete 180, and failed, but we forgave Red 5, because we believe in them, and we believed in what Firefall could do. So, we are done with the testing phase, the game is going to launch! I think Red 5 has been waiting for this moment for than anyone has. This is their pride and joy, their baby. They have done a good job listening to the community about what the game needs, and doesn't need. They need to continue that. Firefall seems to be the game that has a really strong unique community.

A lot of people even though they disliked some of the changes, like I said before stuck with the game, because it was unique. An open world MMOFPS. Something I have been waiting for, it seems like forever now. (You can play this game in the third person, just so you all know, MMOFPS sounds better than MMOTPS). To continue what I was saying before, Red 5 needs to continue listening to their community, to the best they can, and continue to have these milestone patches. Instead of changing major things, just add more content to the game. The game is already huge! They have added a ton of content to the game, but just keep going...

Now, I know I seem to be talking like a huge fan boy, but I am a huge fan of this game, I saw it's potential. To see it getting closer, and closer to what I want it to be like? It makes me jump for joy. Red 5 has openly shared their vision of the game, while other people have different things they want from the game. Whatever it may be, it finally got me to the point where I have put a huge amount of hours into the game so far, non stop. (Okay, well I stopped to write, and watch the International. Don't kill me please). I'm very excited to see where this game will be headed post launch. I'm actually happy that this game is getting launched. Even though some may claim it has been in launch mode for several years, this... This is what we have been waiting for all along.

These blog posts will be a mini series, leading into my Firefall review. There will be four posts in total. Part 1-3 I will be talking about what I do in the game, Red 5, you know, my usual stuff, post 4 will be the end review. I'm limiting the total posts because sometimes I say it will go on forever, and it only last about 4 posts. I think four total posts will suffice. One will be longer than the last. I think it will be easier for you all to understand, and read. I'm super excited about this.

An Important note to readers, this game is in Early Access. This is taken from the Offical Firefall Website.

As a reminder, any player who created their Firefall account before July 8th has access to this Early Access period, and any new player who wishes to participate can do so by purchasing one of our Firefall Launch Packs. For those who don’t want to spend the money, don’t worry! It’s only two short weeks until July 29th when the doors open and Firefall becomes officially launched and available to anyone and everyone for free!

Part 2 will be coming up after the International is over. I hope to see you all in Firefall! If you enjoyed this post, or want to talk about it, leave a comment below, or tweet me @SirIsaacJewton. Cheers!

WildStar [P4] [Final]

And so we finish our space adventure...

This series ended sooner than I expected, because of the frustration this game has caused me. I know only four posts don't mean a lot, but.... Due to how the game is running, and continues to run, even after a month and their first major patch release. Wildstar has been out for over a month. I was hoping for more fixes before their first major patch release, but I guess that didn't happen. Sad days. To clarify, I made it to level 40 before unsubbing to the game. I couldn't make the leap to max level, because of what I will be talking about shortly. I believe gave WS a 8.4/10. I think that is a fair score.

So, what ultimately made me unsub to the game was the fps issues, and pretty much I've been there and done that with most of the games I've played. (Play wise). I mean... most of the games I play right now are linear questing. Holding your hand, and you know... Kill X, and get X come back to me for your reward cupcake. I think that was my main problem was just I've done all this before, just in different ways. I ended up saying at one point... "Well, I could just play WoW, and get rid of my FPS issue" I shook my head when I said that, because I hate referring to any game to WoW, but I was so frustrated at that point I just didn't care what I said. (I'm sorry if that upsets you). I've spent most of my time harping on the issues I had with this game more than what I'm actually doing inside the game. I had a lot of rough drafts of the final post for this, and cut a lot of stuff out, because I sounded like a whiny little bitch. (Excuse my language).

I mean, I sound like one now, but I was more of one if the first draft than anything. Good god, I re-read it, and I'm just like... People will flame me because I'm being a little bitch. Hooray. I'd like to go over what I really enjoyed about the game before anything. The music for sure. I know this game get's praised a lot for it's music, and truly I will praise it as well. I loved the in-game music, and sounds. I would have loved to seen more voice acting in the game, (SWTOR, spoiled me). It was one of the few games I didn't have music playing in the background, I listened to the in-game sound/music. Defiantly well played by Carbine and what they did with their music. The art style of the grow eventually grew on me, and I began to like it more and more. Though, it is very cartoony, it sort of grew on me. Normally I don't like cartoony graphics, I tend to stray away from games that have them, it turned out to be okay.

I enjoyed the whole "Telegraph" combat system until a point. What point is that? Until I got to the point where the de sync, and the FPS issues got a hold of me and just went... "Oh hey, were you having fun? HA, not anymore". Red/Blue things took over combat animations and I just knew red/blue places rather than actual animations. I mean, it was unique, and it made combat a lot more fun to an extent, but after all the issues took over well... Let's just say I wish I had a different combat system. Though I am glad they tried something new, if it wasn't for the issues, combat would be stellar! I probably would still be subbed, possibly.

Though... I did like being called Cupcake! Probably makes me look weird but hey... I am. I really think Carbine did an excellent job with this game over-all. My complaints are valid, but I shouldn't try to take away from what they did in an overall sense. You can tell they put a lot of hard work into the game. I have tried many fixes from what I've done and what the forums/reddit/etc have done to try to tone down the FPS issues, but alas... None of them have worked and I'm just bleh over the situation. I wish I was one of the people who didn't have the issues, but alas I'm not. To clarify what happens is... I will have about peak 70fps, and all of the sudden during the slightest movements, or anything I will drop to about 10-20 fps. Combat is about a steady 15 fps. Major cities on my server are horrible. Slideshow! I like slideshows... I have talked to people who don't have this issues, and I envy you completely.

If there was a sure fix for it, or down the road Carbine fixes it, and for the love of God, Carbine please try your best to fix it. I will come back. I promise you I will actually. You even have proof I said it right here! I could look beyond the questing, and things that are a minor dislike to me, and play the game 24/7. I would even stream it! I did try to stream the game, and the FPS issues didn't increase, it just didn't look so good on the stream when my FPS died. Slideshow on Twitch everyone come join! No, no one wants to see that. Wildstar turned into a slideshow, oh it's so beautiful...

To be 100% honest, I don't think Wildstar failed me at all. I failed the game. It saddens me a little bit actually. This wasn't a game I was excited about it when I first heard about it, I didn't pre-order the first minute you could pre order. This game for me wasn't an impulse buy, I did my research, I watched the Twitch Streams, and I watched the YouTube videos. So it wasn't like for me... OMG NEW MMO? MUST PLAY MUST BUY. Defiantly not like that for me.

As I mentioned before, gave WildStar an 8.4 out of 10. Despite all my issues with the game. I would give the game a 8.5 out of 10. My nitpicking and failing of the game does not give me the right to give it a bad review. The content the game offers, along with the amazing music, end-game content, pvp, and comedic value, gives that game a very solid score. (Though, if the game didn't have techical issue, I might have gave it a higher score). Some of you might think I have rose tinted glasses on. If you do, I'm sorry you think that. I think it's a really fair score. Carbine has done a fantastic job on the game. If the game ever fixes the in-game issues. (For those who are curious. I am still getting the FPS drops on my brand new computer). I will come back to the game, and drop the others. Well, not Dota 2. Haha.

Sorry for the long delay on the posts. The Dota 2 International is going on, and I'm watching pretty much every game, along with work. I have no time to write or finish any of this. So I apologize for the long delay. Since I have my computer setup, I am now streaming on Twitch almost daily. (International is taking up a lot of my time). I'm streaming at odd times until I can get a schedule up for myself. As for other games. I'm actually looking to review Darkfall: Unholy Wars. A lot more posts will come post International. Sorry for all the delays again.

If you liked this post, or want to discuss WildStar, please leave a comment below, I'd love to hear from you all, or tweet me @SirIsaacJewton. Till next time! Cheers!
