Dungeons and Dragons online- a sad goodbye from a former loyal player

This is my first mmo blog.  I dont want it to deteriorate into a ranting mess.  But I do feel the need to vent a little.  I played what I considered to be a quality mmo for 2 years, that may not seem long to some. May seem like a complete waste of a life to others.  My personal situation made gaming a good outlet to turn to.  Being a mother my day involved the care of my child. But when I had free time at night especially I got to enjoy a fantastic world with friends.  Slowly though threw bad buisness decisions that fun has come to an end.

This is a warning to those who are seeing the hype Turbine is trying with their new model.  I wont slander the company but I will say their latest announcement broke a lot of their playerbases spirits yet again.  We the rabid fans who went toe to toe with other gamers in an online contest in March now feel like the fools they were calling us for continually supporting Turbine.

It started with "Vast and Mysterious" then small crumbs thrown at us to let us know an update was coming.  Then 7 months down the pike we get a release date. Many of us re upped our subscriptions thinking finally we will see new content.  Some have been in the game longer then I many of us had several capped characters that could do nothing but run the same raids over and over. Or try to roll up new lowbies on other servers..once again to run the same thing over and over.  A vicious cycle of repetitivness.  Needless to say the original announced release date finally gave us hope that our collective geek hopes wanted.  Now after many of us had our cards charged they announce they messed up yet again and once again the release is bumped a month. But to people who have heard the song and dance for months now can we really believe they will get it right? When the only beta testing they do is on a preview server? Ive lost faith they will deliver even in a months time. They just are not going about "stress testing" in a decent way.  They expected a test sever that many had problems even downloading would gauge the amount of stress their true playerbase would cause...that in itself proves that many of us who are fed up and have cancelled are justified in doing so.

Well they manged to get some of us some for only a month (Myself) others for a few months due to a deal they signed up with. Those unfortunate folks will continue to pay till the late fall.  And will this elusive mod ever see light? Considering it was supposed to come months ago Im having my doubts.  They pulled the rug out of many of their player's feet with this latest fiasco.  And I hope others who have realized they wasted years of their lives playing the game will finally walk away.  Its not an easy thing to do but its necessary unless you really dont mind throwing money away for a game thats become stagnant.

It may seem im writing this out of anger. Honestly im not,  im sad its like the end of a story bittersweet end to something that had become apart of my life.  I just wish it had ended on a high note instead of leaving a bitter taste in my mouth. I used to hate mmo's and then changed my mind. Now I am unsure if I will play another after this.  2 years is a long time to game on one game.  And if the level of treatment this company gives to its customers is the norm then I definitely do not wish to waste any more of my life with another one. Just felt the need to get this off my chest their forums are a firekeg right now with those who are just as upset to those who mock calling people who are upset pathetic.  Fine I'll accept that title from anyone reading this who says "its a game get over it." Your right it was a game a game that pulls you in allows you to escape the world that may not be the bright place it is for others. To make friends with others who like you need just a little escape every now and again. It was a haven for me for when times got bad and now its gone.  And thats the reason behind my blog pure and simple im just a sad gamer who threw the mis-management of what I once considered a top game is now displaced.  Agree disagree mock it doesnt matter. I needed to get this maybe now I can truly walk away and not look back.

You've completely messed up facts. Another person who didn't read too well what REALLY Turbine wrote, just went with the flow of upset people which twisted facts.

Reading comprehension. I was there too, and while for me it's VERY fundamental that no one can lie to me and have me as a customer, Turbine never lied to me nor fooled me.

Of course that's not very nice when you've paid for 6 months of subscription and then it turns out that there's not so much content developed for you as you hoped for. But heck, you didn't have any guarantees. You've risked and lost if you expected more content in updates (as they were developing "new" DDO behind the scenes).

But one would need to be very naive to think that paying for 6 months of subscription is risk free. So it's not Turbine that screwed you folks. You've screwed up yourselves with your high hopes and opinion that you pay for anything else than just _playing the game_.

Has anyone seen any note about patches or updates in MMOs license? Any guarantee on how often and how big there will be? Nope, updates may or may not come at all. You just pay to play what you see in game NOW. 6 months later it might, and often IS a very different experience in an MMO game. I hope you'll learn from those mistakes for your next MMOs. We're adults, don't expect any company to take responsibility for your purse! It's _you_ who needs to make wisest possible decisions, and you're risking all the time anyway.

Sarr you can continue to defend Turbine's actions say "They never promised you took the risk." whatever makes you feel better. Ive said it before many people have different threshholds on what they can take as customers. Turbine's dodgy tatics have reached the apex for me. If they havent for you fine good luck with ddo/lotro and any other product you wish to give your sub to I no longer wish to be a patron of a company I cannot trust.  Take it how you wish but Your wrong for telling me Im wrong in my feelings.

We are in a major recession folks, MMO companies will do anything to keep the money flowing into thier coffers, they will lie to you, tell you half truths, make promises that will keep you spending your money on them....

Sarr: So you're basically saying companies can screw people over by posting vague notices implying that content may be on the way - thus getting people like Darkmaiden16 to resub - when in reality it's not? That, my good sir, is the definition of fraud.

I've played my share of online games. They number in the triple digits... I'm an old hand. Been there, done that. And that experience is why I never play subscription based games. They never fail to disappoint. The only way to have a surefire bang-for-your-buck experience is: get some RL friends to play with you, agree on how long to subscribe. Then go in, enjoy your time with them, and quit when the sub's over. End of story. Don't linger (unless you all agree to get burned together, lol).

Never, ever, pin your hopes on a company's promises of new content. I've read hundreds, maybe even thousands, of laments like these over the years. Moving on to a new game may be painful, but trust me - after several dozen games you get used to it. Why should I stay with one game? I owe no company any loyalty. In fact they should be fighting between themselves to prove worthy of my subscription dollar. And I'm certainly not going to spend it on misty promises of goodness to come. Gaming companies have rarely ever delivered.

Rep how long have you played with Turbine from what I just read your on the beta good for you. I currently played for 2 years got several capped girls under my belt. Had girls being capped on other servers due to not being able to have more then 10 on the server I favored most.  On top of running their content repeatedly I raided a lot during the last few months while the elusive mod was being bandied about as "super secret and vast and mysterious." Then in anticipation with many others for this monday got the shock  on thursday four days before they were schedueled a release that they arent doing it for another month.  Now maybe if they gave us a concrete reason why this is happening it wouldnt have upset many of us. But once again they are being deceptive wont say whats the deal. The stress test they are quoting many who were on Lama at the time said the only problem they saw was with their store.  Mod 9 has been ready since may according to their own PR and Devs and they are working on mod 10 yet we still have to wait because they messed up their microtransaction project.  Its sad and im walking away call it a rant if you want its a part of closing a door to a game that was fun but very addictive for me.

Sarr have you taken your defense and love of Turbine so far as to attack people on their blogs?

Once again you accuse people of not reading too well. Is that your standard line for people who do not fall into your fanboy lovefests? Maybe, just maybe the person who reads poorly is you.

Blaming the customers instead of the company that lied to them(yes they lied, you just like taking it lube free and pretend the lies never happened so you can avoid quitting due to your comment of never paying a company that lies to you)  is pathetic. Turbine is to blame not the players who expected and deserved better.

What is with your constant comment of people believing twisted facts? The one twisting is you Sarry, you twist in a failed attempt to make Turbine look good. Truth is they screwed up again. Twist that.

Reploid a blog can be a rant. Welcome to reality, fanboy is on floor 6 please use the elevator in the back of the building.

If Turbine was doing as well as you say why would they make this huge change? The answer is DDO as a monthly subscription game was a financial and popular failure. It got no attention and nearly no players.
