Kakao Speaks to Recent 'Unbanning' of Suspected Exploiters - MMORPG.com

The Black Desert Online Reddit has recently been afire after Kakao Games "unbanned" a number of players back in May. According to several posters, one prominent YouTube streamer is thought to still be gaining resources and items through exploitation of game mechanics. We reached out to Kakao about the issue and to get their response to Reddit user's allegations.

First, the original Kakao statement from January 9, 2017:

During an investigation into reports of a potential exploit last April, our team determined that it was, in fact, possible for users to send multiple workers to a single node. Shortly after, a patch was applied to resolve this bug. However, due to an oversight in the applied patch, some elements of the bug were not fully removed. One such example was the failure to reset all player’s workers, including those that were being utilized in the exploit.

It was later discovered that some users’ workers were still designated to a single node. This allowed the continued use of multiple workers on a single node, and has subsequently been resolved as of July 12th maintenance.

Users that have been identified as using this exploit will be penalized. Based on further investigations, we have decided to take the following actions dependent on the severity of the involved players’ activities. Sanctions against the exploiters will be handled as follows.

  • Permanent Ban
    • 3 Users have been found to have used complex methods to intentionally and maliciously utilize the exploit for extremely high-value gains.
  • 72 Hour Suspension & Removal of Illicit Earnings
    • 40 Users have been found to have used the exploit to a lesser degree.

We apologize for the insufficient measures taken to resolve this exploit sooner and will do our best to prevent such oversights in the future.

After our query, Kakao further expanded on the original statement:

After careful investigation of all the accounts involved, our customer support concluded the players gained resources and items by using game mechanics in an unintended way. This could not have been performed accidentally and I'd like to stress that their investigation was extremely thorough.

As we said in our original announcement, we feel that we did not take sufficient action to prevent this in the first place and this was taken into consideration when determining the punishment of offenders. The punishment for the affected players is in our opinion is fitting and appropriate.

We won't be sharing any further information about specific cases, as that is against our internal policy, that guarantees player confidentiality. We’d like to remind people that naming/shaming and witchhunting is against our community rules and that any forms of harassment on our forums or in-game can be reported to us.

Thanks to all our tipsters and to Kakao for their input!
