An acquired taste

Why Astro Empires is my favorite game
Disclaimer: The following article is the sole opinion of its author and does not represent in its thoughts or opinions. This is not an official editorial article.

Astro Empires is my favorite game.  It does not have the wonderful graphics, the super customer support, or the ever updating content of many other games I play.  It does not need them as the game itself is addicting enough without all of those bells and whistles.

AE is a game that is basically spreadsheets and timers. The real game is not the game mechanics.  It's finding the friends you want to team up with, and PvP beat on everyone else.  The game has loads of build up time, with travel times that can range from a few seconds to a few weeks, construction time that is a few minutes to a few months, and research tree that makes interesting choices.

Explaining the best practices from start of game through the inevitable wars and conquests is beyond the scope of one article.  So I plan on posting up a series of the concepts, game stages , and general examples so those unfamiliar with the heroin of browser MMO games can see and avoid the worst pitfalls, and enjoy the game the way it should be enjoyed : shooting fleets and being sociable.

The AE forums are something that the new player should proceed with CAUTION.  You say something stupid, you will get flamed.  Some players are well known flamers, like Stella Rosa, Pipelayer, even yours truly.  However the forum is part of the AE experience, and should be perused.  SOMETIMES it provides useful information.  It always provides entertainment.

In the game, You might win a battle, and then get turned into a grease stain by the retaliation.  Unlike Master of Orion II, when your base is conquered, you do NOT lose use of it.  While occupied, it has the economy cut by one third, and the production cut in half.  Turtling down to make yourself not profitable to a rival can damage you MORE than being occupied does.  This is the counter intuitive part of the game that trips up most new players.

If you decide to play the game as a new guy, try playing Alpha FIRST, as the oldest server has the most players willing to help the new guy.  It will teach you basic mechanics of the game.  The ruthless tactics of later servers you can learn later when you join a server with friends you made while learning in Alpha.

Final Score

Simple game that is easy to learn
Social aspect of game is wonderful
 No downloads needed
Upgrade not NEEDED to play well
 Upgrade is inexpensive
 Later servers newb hostile
 Graphics meh
