  • PAX East 2018 - Ashes of Creation Demo & Interview

In the last few years there have been many new MMOs stepping up to the plate and trying to be the next big hit. Many of these have started to show the first signs of trouble early on. So, it’s within this context I approached the pre-alpha demo for Ashes of Creation; with a fair bit of apprehension and a side of cynicism. I am quite happy to say the demo exceeded all my expectations for what a MMO in pre-Alpha can be.

  • MMORPG.com's Best of 2017 Awards

It hasn’t been a great year for NEW games in the MMO genre. But it sure was a pretty great year for veteran MMOs. So while we look forward to the crop of big Indie releases in 2018 and 2019, let’s look back at 2017 and count our blessings for the games that keep on pumping out great content. These were voted on by all staff, single vote only, and no ties were allowed. Some were close, but a winner was chosen in each category! Here is MMORPG.com’s Best of 2017 Awards.

  • City Hall - Rome Wasn't Built in a Day

Politics and MMORPGs aren’t things that usually mix well. Every game that tries to bring the player run cities and politics to the gaming world usually ends up with a bunch of toxic people running around killing anything they can get their hands on. It is this reason alone that I am a little wary of the City Hall concept in the upcoming MMORPG Ashes of Creation.

  • The Mighty Beard - Changing the Way Taverns work in MMOs

Most of us are familiar with the tavern or inn within an MMO game world. It’s generally a last stop before logging off to get rested XP or a first stop when arriving somewhere new to make it your new home. The Ashes of Creation developers are hoping to make it more; to make it feel like a tavern should: alive. Read on to find out how they plan to accomplish this feat.

  • The 10 Most Wanted MMOs of 2018

I think it’s probably safe to say that the big releases for MMOs in 2017 have come and gone. Unless Blizzard shocks the world and magically puts out an expansion to WoW as a surprise Christmas gift, we’re already looking forward to 2018. So strap on your hype-belts, and board the hype-train, as it’s time to look forward to 2018 and hope it’s far, far better than 2017. This is our list of the 10 Most Wanted MMOs of 2018.

  • Why I’m Excited, But Avoiding Hype

Enter Ashes of Creation. Here is a game that is marketing itself to someone in my exact shoes; people missing that wonderment and immersion and most importantly the sense of community that comes from grouping being a primary means of getting things accomplished. A part of me would love nothing more than to run into an area and should ‘camp check’ like my days of yore. Despite my own misgivings I find myself excited at the prospect - which is why I simultaneously try to and try not be.

  • PAX West Preview - Multiplayer is the Key

Backers of Ashes of Creation look like they don’t have to worry about being overly patient. After just successfully completing their crowd-funding campaign three short months ago they were determined to have a playable pre-alpha demo at PAX this year. But I don’t think anyone would have expected them to accomplish what they did in such a short time.

Ashes of Creation ran a wildly successful Kickstarter Campaign, we tasked our grizzled crowd funded MMORPG veteran Timothy Eisen with a post campaign write up that covers victory, some soul searching and some words of experience.

Ashes of Creation came out of nowhere recently to be one of the upcoming most wanted MMOs based on its premise and a couple of early trailers alone. In light of their impressive vision, we reached out to Intrepid Studios to speak with their Creative Director and Founder Steven Sharif.

  • Five Reasons Why MMOs Are Making a Comeback

Many game industry people continue to talk about how MMOs have come and gone. However, we continue to see major events which point to the opposite. Players are seeking more online experiences through console and mobile gameplay. As many in the industry predicted early on, eventually every game will move into the online space. Sure, plenty of RPGs or fighting games might keep off the intrawebs, but as trends continue, there will be plenty of MMOs coming over the next few years.

  • Like It or Not, Destiny 2 is Good for the MMO Genre

Destiny 2 is coming to PC. Praise be to RNGeezus, it’s true. While the “Persistent Online Shooter” does everything it can to avoid the term MMO, truth is they’ve invited us (a site mainly focused on MMOs) out to their studio on several occasions. Acronym or not, even Bungie realizes the game’s draw for fans of the genre. With the sequel now officially launching on the PC September 8th, Destiny 2 has become the bright spot on the MMO gamer’s horizon.

  • Open Questions Are OK

Let’s get right to that pink polka dotted elephant in the room, how about that trailer? I’d be remiss if I didn’t say that I’m always conflicted if not saddened by pre-alpha trailers. Why? Over the years, I’ve learned a thing or two from following MMORPG development. One of those things is that pre-alpha, alpha and most of beta are wild cards. By launch it may be that not a thing you saw prior is making the final cut. MMORPGs change as they grow, sometimes substantially, sometimes less so.
