ARK: Survival Evolved Articles

  • ARK: Survival Evolved's Expansion is an Abuse of Early Access

Earlier this month, Studio Wildcard announced their first paid expansion for ARK: Survival Evolved. While undeniably impressive, there’s something eyebrow raising about a “completely finished” expansion for a completely unfinished base game. With 12,000 reviews in the last month pushing the game’s review scores into the negative, Chris shares his take on the questionable actions of Studio Wildcard.

  • Is Beta the New Launch?

After taking time to read yesterday’s feature on The Upcoming MMOs of 2016 it really seems like more and more games that are launching in 2016 are already playable now. I’ve asked this question years ago when beta keys were given out like candy as a marketing ploy to get new players into the game. Betas are supposed to be for testing, at least, they used to be. Now, instead of being used to market a game, they are just outright used to sell the game in early access.

  • That's Not an RPG! 2016 Edition

It’s a new year and that means it’s time to return again to a question we first posed last year: What exactly makes an RPG? As different genres appropriate more staples of the roleplaying genre, the waters continue to get muddier and muddier. Is Fallout 4 an RPG, for example? How about Destiny? Let’s break down exactly what makes an RPG in 2016.

  • First Impressions of ARK Early Access

Let me put this out there: loads of wild dinosaurs, riding them, pooping, eating it, farming with it, PVE and PVP servers, loads of crafting and progression. 70-100 players per server for now, with hundreds promised down the road to launch in 2016. Does this sound like a game you might want to try? If so, read on because ARK: Survival Evolved is quickly becoming my sleeper of 2015.

  • The Hunger Games Goes Prehistoric

ARK: Survival Evolved is one of the few survival games I can get behind. I think it’s because the game ditched the zombie thing, which let’s face it, is a bit overdone. Zombies have invaded pop culture to the point of over saturation being on TV, movies, books, games, and occasionally real life if you feel like visiting a state that has “legalized it”. ARK was right to go with dinosaurs, because it has been a smash hit.

  • Survival of the Fittest is The Hunger Games Meets Jurassic Park

Ever since I watched The Hunger Games I've been in love. No, not with Jennifer Lawrence's portrayal of hero Katniss Everdeen (though she was pretty cool), but rather with the idea The Hunger Games was built upon. Yesterday, I was able to finally have a part of that dream realized, and I cannot stop thinking about it. The developers of Ark: Survival Evolved rounded up a bunch of writers and YouTube personalities and threw us into our own Battle Royale, and it was incredible.

  • The Top 7 Best MMOs of 2015…So Far

I’m not going to lie to you: 2015 hasn’t exactly been full of big moments of big announcements. Maybe it’s because all of the best ideas are already taken, maybe it’s because everyone likes different things, or maybe it’s because developers and publishers are getting lazy, but there’s no denying the fact that the MMO genre has seen better years. From a lack of real excitement or hype around releases, to a lack of innovation, it’s not like it used to be.

  • 5 MMOs That Would Be Perfect for Consoles

Today’s MMO market isn’t what it used to be. A little less than a decade ago everyone was playing the same handful of games and there wasn’t much MMO-hopping going on. Free-to-play was all but nonexistent and unless you paid a subscription for a PC MMORPG, you weren’t playing much in the way of persistent online games. Nowadays, you can boot up an MMO on everything from your smartphone and PC to consoles and tablets. They’re everywhere.
