NPC Profile: Gilles de Payens

Tactica Online has released a profile on an in-game NPC. Gilles de Payens is a dedicated Templar. Well versed in the "dark arts", this hardened warrior lives and breathes his order. To learn a little more about the character, and the Templars, read on:

Charged with continuing its glorious work, Gilles revels in the Templars history, and all his thoughts are in its service. There is no doubt in his mind that the order will see its efforts come to fruition under his reign.

That his knights are now mostly in hiding, for two hundred years more a loose-knit group of fanatics than a chivalric order, does not deter him in the least. He who shrinks from a hard task will not realize his dreams.

Once brought low for heresy, the order has today become what its enemies once accused it of: a haven for those wishing to bring down the Inquisition, a convocation of sorcerers, willing to use any means to achieve its ends. For them, no world at all is better than a world ruled by their enemies.

Exemplar of his order's obsession with mysticism, Gilles is well-studied in the dark arts, and wields a sword only from a sense of propriety. His world contains no light, and its remaking is his life's work.

Shaped by a lifetime spent hiding from the Inquisition's gaze, he prefers subtle stratagems to direct action. While others glory in battle, he would rather his victory was assured before his enemy even noticed there was a conflict.

Despite possessing secrets that could change history, many see the Knights as driven more by their hatred than by any desire to bring these secrets to light. They could have acted upon them any time, they say, why have they waited? Perhaps, they suggest, they haven't acted because there are no secrets; perhaps, to date, any secrets have been beyond their understanding.

This inaction burns at Gilles, and his greatest desire is to see the order's critics put to rest by an indisputable show of their might.

Regardless of their motivations, the Templars are often seen as the most focused opposition to the Inquisition. Though they are but a small number of those who embrace the mystic arts as a road to power, their clashes with the Inquisition have given them a certain profile, and their leadership has often used this to create a banner that those unhappy with the current regime may flock to.
