2011 has come to a close, and now it's time for you to tell us which games deserve an award. The 2011 MMORPG.com Players' Choice Awards are here for you to do just that. These polls will be open for an entire week, and we'll announce the winners shortly after. Only one vote can be cast on each poll per account, so make sure you represent the games you want to win the most!
Each of the nominated games we believe had something to make them fit the categories listed, and while we couldn't nominate every game, we think these are the best examples of each respective category. And if there's a game we missed that you hope we include next year in our nominations... tell us!
Note: IE9 Users may experience issues casting their votes, and we ask them to please use a different browser until we can figure out the culprit.

I just voted but still pool show no vote 0 % on any of the options in pool "most anticipated"
why?
@fenistil Because tor has to win ;)
Hey, I voted for GW2 there and it still have 0% while TOR have 100%...
Edit: Doh, thanks, Bill. :)
Edit again: Still is 0%, I think there is a bug somewhere with the most anticipated poll.
Yeah, it was either refresh or click through 5 different pages... we went for this. Hopefully people see the glowing yellow bold text and stop to read first. :)
Yeah same, i think it's bugged.( i refreshed inbetween votes).
Terra must win the most anticipated for sure.
Terra = the planet you are on
TERA = Korean MMO soon to be released in the West
Nah, GW2 will win that award easily, check the hype meter...
So my two votes not registered any chance to 'allow' me try vote again?
edit: now I remember I think I refreshed it after voting in most anticipated or most innovative (not registered my vote in any of those though...)
My GW2 vote didn't register on the most anticipated, either. Also, I'm using Chrome, and every time I clicked vote my page would automatically reload/refresh making me not have to do it manually as suggested, pointless.
Hey folks,
In the interest of no more folks wasting votes, we're taking the feature down for a moment and going to spread it across 5 pages so the polls work properly. Please bear with us!
It'll be back up momentarily.
Edit 2: We will also likely reset the polls so those who had wasted votes can re-cast. We're VERY sorry for the technical hiccups. We'll let everyone know when polling is back open and it'll be open for a week to boot, so there will be plenty of time to cast your votes.
Edit 3: Our web guru has a fix on deck that will not only make voting easier, but also reset the polls so that everyone who missed out can vote again. We'll inform you all as soon as it's up and working. Thanks for your patience!
Edit 4: As you can see, it's live again, and no votes were wasted!
good choice!
Everyone: It's not that they were wasting votes as such, just that there were multiple vote buttons and multiple polls and general confusion all around.
Now there is a single button and you can pick all the options in one awesome swoop. No multipages, no reloads.
Go go go! Let the voting resume!
wow my votes were right on the money in every category sweet
For the first time ever I haven't voted for WoW in any category. Oh No! I have turned into one of you guys! ....ARGHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!! ;)
vote button isnt working for me
I gotta say that it's BS not including SWTOR for game of the year.
Vote button not working here
We stick by not including SWTOR, for the simple reason that it came out 11 days before the year was over. It'll be nominated in 2012 no doubt. But it simply was not out long enough in 2011 to be up for our GotY, no matter what other sites might have believed.
As for the vote button not working, if you've voted before the votes counted and it won't work any longer. You'll just see the results. If you get the radial buttons, but Vote does not work, please let us know. We see the poll numbers going up rapidly, so we know it's working.
Clicking vote does nothing, no results, didn't give anything except www.mmorpg.com/#
It has yet to accept my vote.
Just counted it. Just buggy. Keep trying.
With CCP falling all over it self this year with its PR stupidity RIFT deserves to win.
While RIFT isn't the most original game Trions seems to listen to its players and they deliver content at a good pace.
For most anticipated I picked GW2.
Same here, vote button does nothing, on Chrome with edited hostfile, but no adblocker or anything else what could change the way the site works.
We're looking into the reports of the broken vote button, but it IS working as we see the totals climbing. Please keep trying while Skywisenight looks into the issue.
Well the button "works" in IE9 for me, tho it redirects instant to frontpage.
But Chrome it does nothing at all.
Ungh, none of the choices for GoTY fit, really. DCUO launched, flopped, went F2P where people who passed on it initially could try it and confirm their susicions on how bad it was.
EVE I love to death but it is very niche.
LotRO's the strongest but RoI itself was pretty weak.
Rift was just... ungh.
WoW. Really? Sure if we're going by subscriber numbers but Cata's been panned by pretty much everyone, MoP's a joke. Turning into a complete farce is not GoTY worthy.
At least give us write-ins!
Most Innovative, Most Anticipated and Game of the Year all needed a 'None of the above' option. Another crappy year for MMOs in the books. Let's see what 2012 brings.
Yeah I got to say this statement is BS. The game was not accesible for 5 of the head start dates and is still buggy. By all means base TOR off the first 15 days of rage vs Rift. I'll take that challenge any day of the week.
Tried to vote, but it did not worked. No error messages, nothing. Wtf?
i click in vote and nothing happens...
Thank you for not putting SWTOR in Game of the Year!
This
There are still a few kinks guys. Sorry about that! We are working to fix things ASAP.
Try now and let us know if it works, if you were having problems!
Let us select the titles this lineup is crap!
GOTY needs to be a drop down menu of all released mmos.
Voting button does nothing :(
Guys you should really take the article down until you fix the poll...
Try now people! Some server quirks depending how you got to this page. Some were cool, some were not. Now, all are cool :)
In the famous words of Anakin Skywalker...
IT'S WORKING!
League of Legends
Firefall
DC Universe Online
Guild Wars 2
Rift
This is my list top to bottom since it wont let me vote.
Voting worked fine for me, thanks :-)
I'm not sure how you could even consider WoW for most innovative this year - that doesn't seem to make much sense. At least the people are on my side! Yay interwebs!
Why would you link this? I hate you.
Or should I say? I HATE YOU!
I tried to vote and it just redirects me to the main page, and when I come back it has me vote again, so I assume my votes didn't go through v.v
Same, just redirects to main page with no indication if votes where recorded or not.
I know it would cause you some bother and upset but you really need to add an ROI (Re-Open nomination feature). Looking at the "Most Innovative MMO's" is pretty much a list of some of the Least Innovitative MMO's ever released. They may be great (for some) but Innovative they are not.
cant seem to choose a game of the year coz the choices are bullcrap...
Thanks for actually including SWTOR in 2012, where it should be.
Heh voted for WoW as most innovative... raid finder and dungeon finder are awesome. The game itself is stale now, but thats a huge deal in my opinion.
Are they serious most innovative WOW,Rift did they suddenly take leave of their senses or is the standard of journalisim dropping faster than SOE stock after the NGE,also SWTOR,DC is not innovation i think they need to consult a dictionary fast !!
Rift is currently leading by a heavy margin, despite the fact that the game does very little that most of us consider innovative. Is it a good game? Sure. Does it deserve an award for innovation? No way in hell.
This should have been a fairly easy win for Glitch, but unfortunately player's choice awards tend to be more like popularity contests than valid award competitions.
Just voted 10 times...poll not functioning prooperly..
I ignored "Most Innovative" and "Game of the Year" because lol, those choices...
EDIT: Actually, I changed my mind. I've selected DCUO for most innovative, why? Well it occured to me, innovative doesn't necessarily mean 'better' or even 'good.' SoE managed to take a beloved IP filled with some of the most memorable and iconic characters in the world, loved by fanboys as dedicated or more than SWTOR...fuck it up, and go F2P within a year. I mean, damn...that took skill.
Best Hybrid: None of those are on my radar
Rising Star: Archeache, no competition... This game could be huge
Most Innovative: E: NONE OF THE ABOVE (devs you all fail)
Most Anticipated: Planetside 2, ArcheAge, and Guild Wars2
Game of the Year: EVE Online (its not that you win but everyone else loses)
Since SWTOR actually released in 2011 i chose it as the most anticipated even tho it is crappy imo and definitely not deserving of awards concerning quality. I would have definitely chosen GW2 for that slot if it had actually released even an open beta but here we are still waiting for them to make the final changes to the trait system before we can get into an open beta.
nah after the fact that not a single website or magazine gave them even a "needs work" rating on a single category, they definitely needed to be honest and leave that off for SWTOR because let's face it, it may have been the most polished launch but it definitely was not even a B much less the A's they all gave to this poor excuse of a game. Sorry.
Thank God some people still have common sense.
being that these are the only real choices i'd say it's honest to put them up there, tho WoW would have never been under that category normally, they do occasionally put some minor enhancements into the ui. They did change some things in the industry, and trust me i'm not a fan of their recent expansion or the problems their Dev Ghostcrawler has caused for the players, by ANY means.
Rift has a better chance of being the most innovative then the rest, and that's really sad i agree that this game the one that only added two new things to the genre got the most innovative. SWTOR that didn't add anything new or innovative to the genre (things that weren't found in other games) should have never been on that list. Seriously, EVERYTHING they did was from another game, they just put it together into theirs and what's funny is they didn't even include in their game the innovations Blizzard, Turbine, and Trion came out with in theirs that did actually make gaming much easier process for players. (i'm talking things like AOE looting and guild perks etc)
I wish there was a "none of the above" option on most of these categories.
First off, let's be honest, here. DCUO should have been in "Best Hybrid MMO" category.
And as for "2011 Game of the Year"... WTF?
Why is DCUO, even on this list when there are so many BETTER games that aren't? Sure, it's a lot more fun that WoW or Rift, but there were FAR better games out there than DC. Even a niche game like STO is better, or Age of Conan, which beats DCUO in every department, except MAYBE graphics. Maybe. I might have said "the action based fighting", but the "finishers" and combos in AoC balance that out pretty well (they're also 2 entirely different systems). And this is coming from someone who has been playing DCUO since beta AND actually really likes it, lol. (despite SOE's management being one giant catastrophic failure). Just being realistic.
All I'm saying is, sure... put DCUO up there. It's a lot of fun. WoW and Rift choke, but people like them. I get that. But put up a lot of others too, because there are many that can compete here, let alone beat it senseless. I couldn't vote for any of those games as Game of the year. DCUO may be the best on that list, but is most certainly not the best game I've played in 2011.
Good choice to not include Swtor, im sick of it coming with $$$ and ridiculous 11 days stealing GOTY awards from companies who worked their asses off for 12 month. I regained some respect for this website.
I'm surprised to see WoW ranking so low. Despite screaming critics allover the year, Blizzard somehow always managed to get their share in these "...of the year" polls.
Rift fully deserves it's current status in the poll. Like Rift or not, we all share our load of criticism about that game, but if another two or three companies out there would be as busy about their games as Trion is, the genre wouldn't be stuck in such a misery for years (that yet eclipsed with swtor).
Not shure how TSW can be rising star before ArchAge, but it coming from Funcom i don't need to polish my crystal ball to predict it will be among the Top 3 for the "Falling Star Awards 2012".
Happy gaming in 2012 everyone!
Agree with Chrome Knight... 2011 GOTY has several games that didn't come out in 2011 and leaves several out.... WTF?
Some of these polls are just... I dunno man... SMH.
Trion deserves GOTY for being such a likeable company and this being a very dry year for MMO's, but I feel that Glitch should definitely win the "Most Innovative" title.
I agree. Out of all the MMOs in that list, it is the only one that really fits the definition of the word. it got my vote.
Good choice not including Swtor in 2011 pools.
I agree it is practtically 2012 game, so should be next year.
Though I wonder what Lotro does in GOTY category?
Like seriously? This game is slowly moving towards it's end.
I wonder what are total votes number count? :p
I can appreciate the logic in having SWTOR listed in other "2011" categories but excluding it from GotY. So much for player's choice, right?
I wouldn't have minded the exclusion had you been consistent and kept it from the other category too.('2011 Most Anticipated" would be fine) The "2011 Most Innovative" cateogory proves my point though. Either it is a 2011 game and good enough to be counted or it isn't. Picking and choosing shows that someone has an agenda...
But hey, it's your game, your rules, your award... who am I, but a simple lowly player, to complain.
If Rift wins any award itsa sad day for MMO gaming as its a poorly executed shallow game, shame really as the the concept had real potential. I hope Trion learn from it so Defiance is a much better game.
Wormy's top 3 things that show how bad this last year sucked for mmos:
3) ArcheAche still has not had enough marketing in NA to be named the 'Rising Star' probably because they haven't even started to look at North America and few of you have heard of it.
2) Rift gets game of the year. Nothing against it but really, its nothing special. Compare that to general gamings game of the year of 2011, skyrim. Thats a game that deserves a goty award.
.... and the number one thing that shows how bad this last year sucked for mmos is........
1) Rift, WoW, and SWTOR were among the 5 games up for being 'Most Innovative'. Comically, these would be my choices for least innovative AAA mmos. Together they have about 75% of the votes. Somehow SWTOR is more innovative than WoW was, strange. Fanboy votes, anyone?
5v5 Arena Games aren't MMO's.
For the love of god. Stop fuckin signing it as MMO's. It's just disgusting.
If those are MMO's, 1v1 SC2 games is MMO aswell since it has a couple 10 thousand playing it.
How about players that think SW:TOR is innovative? but nah that cannot be there's alway a comspiracy isn't there, where's me tin hat.
None of them are worth voting for, can we please have the option of none?
Also I laughed when I saw games like LoL and HoN being nominated for an MMO award, Counter Strike has more players are these MMOs too? Fucking next Single Player games will be nominated for MMO awards..........
Again this site is poorly run and a complete joke.
Players voting for the game they are currently playing = comspiracy!!!11!
reason i didnt vote on the category why vote something is bullshit just for the voting cause options sucks? not my cuppa
Agreed.
MOBA's aren't more of an mmo than rts or fps games like SC2 or CoD / BF3.
Doesn't work, using firefox
Poll is so Broken!
Bloodlines Champions, Heros of Newerth and the king of them all League of Legends are MOBAs, not MMOs... I'm not sure what WoT would be? Multiplayer Online Combat Sim (MOCS)? List should have been more like Global Agenda, ABP Reloaded, and Fallen Earth maybe?
3 top picks for Most Inovative clones are a game that has been rehashing the same content and making up total BS out of desperation for 8 years and 2 games that devs will admit looked at the first and decided "if it's not broke, don't fix it". I voted for Glitch by default since I've never heard of it and but know DCUO for all the things it did wrong. The others don't even count imo.
TSW is my most anticipated in years and turning lots of heads in recent months. I voted for it as rising star although as an admitted FC Fanboy who's been following it since 09 it felt out of place lol
Gave GOTY to EVE simply it's the only one on the list that I might mourn if they pulled the plug tomorrow :-D
Not sure why ArcheAge is in the list. The game doesnt even release in North America....
maybe it will maybe it wont, we simple dont know.
Do i think it stand to be something great? yeah fore sure but it does not deserve to win/be nominated any award based on that premise.
Whatever, the most innovative game released in 2011 is kinda like have a food vote on a gourmet site and have the choice between Big Mac, Whopper and similar products.
GW2 should be up for every award because it's GW2 and it's the best game ever even if it's not out yet.
I really liked Rifts when I played it, but my friends and I were so amped about Star Wars that I never paid that much mind. Now that Star Wars has come out and it ended up so bland and average, maybe it's time to give that game another shot.
This is going to be a great year for MMOs though. EA's first salvo with SWTOR was a little weak, but the more I learned about who was developing the game, the more I realized that getting my hopes up would only result in disappointment.
The Secret World and Guild Wars II at least both have features that they can point to and say "This is what we are doing to make the game play different than what you are used to." My bet is that The Secret World will be the game that gets the win for me. Tera and Wildstar are definitely contenders as well. It'll take a miracle for me to stick with Star Wars though.
And I loved seeing Glitch up there. For what it is, Glitch is pretty awesome.
ROFL at people voting for SWTOR as being innovative. I mean... c'mon! All they did was add BioWare storytelling... bad and formulaic BioWare storytelling... to Warhammer Online then gussied it up with lightsabers and spaceships.
Because this is a international site and the world actually (*gasp*) is larger than the USA?
There is nothing that stops games thet only releases in other parts of the world to get a award.
That's a great way of putting it.
Also how could you consider these as player choices when the games listed are nominated by YOU and not the players?
Seriously your site is losing more and more credibility lately. Considering i've been here for quite many years i've seen it go from good to real bad! From poorly constructed articles with articles that arent even proofread for errors and english isnt even my first langauge! To totally bias stories.
WAR is PvP centered, TOR is PvE centered so pick another game as example.
The games play differently, WOW and Rift are closer to TOR than WAR playstyle wise.

Recipe for SWTOR
1 Can Bioware Storytelling
1 Generic MMO Skill/Combat system, seperated. Discard Auto-attack or save for later use.
1 Box of Lightsabers
Mix well, serve over WoW gameplay with a side of StarFox
Eh trust me i am not saying that to boost the US ego... i am not even from there. However the target audience of this site is westerner. If the site was trully international in scope, this list would be mostly Korean and Asian MMO. We like to think that western MMO are huge, they arent bad, but there's a lot of asians out there and they LOVE their MMO.
So it's why i am saying ArcheAge should not be in this list. I want that game to come to these shores bad but until it is announced, the votes, perhaps to the exception of most anticipated are pointless. Just like the really innovative game in that bunch was Glitch, yet it probably wont win....
wth is WoW doing here???
The secret world? does anyone still believe in funcom??
How can SWTOR be considered in some categores and not others? I get it: It's not in the "Game of the Year" category beause it's only been released 11 days in 2011. So, how is it in any other category then?
Imagine the most critically acclaimed movie in 2011 considered for "Best Sound" but not for "Best Picture". "Oh, we'll consider it for best sound THIS year, but best picture NEXT year."
Whoever posts "MMORPG Game of the Year" in their advertising in 2012 better thank their lucky stars that SWTOR wasn't even nominated.
I don't see anyone beating GW2 next year for this category, so basically SWTOR is out of luck.
It's ok, MSNBC gave it GOTY award..... =P it deserves a good LULZ!
Especially in the "most innovative" category, life irony is gigantic.
Only 5 options in G o t Year?
I could not vote for any of them :;
Somehow, I get the feeling that a lot of people have never played DC Universe Online. It was the only innovative game this year. I guess it's just a popularity contest anyways.
That awkward moment when all nominatees for the most inovative are WoW and its clones.
Everyone vote wow, and lets watch the outrage
2011 wasn't a year for new, quality releases for me. It was more of a year for old games to become golden (Lineage II, Final Fantasy XI, RuneScape Everquest II?) and recent releases to get better, RIFT being a prime example.
So I'm taking a look at the list of the most "innovative MMORPG," and all I'm seeing are WoW and its clones (Don't start the WoW clone argument - these newer games use WoW as an example in their development and their very being, therefore being WoW-clones. WoW was an Everquest clone in its time, however). But it's understandable why these are on the list - there was close to no mainstream innovation in 2011, ending with the giant multi-million dollar WoW-clone (read above) that is Star Wars: the Old Republic.
I voted for RIFT because the developers did so well to update the game on a regular basis. Yeah, RIFT is a WoW-clone... but a regularly-updated one and, despite not actually playing the game due to not beign in my fasaad, I have friends who play it and from what I've seen and heard, Trion did a great job compared to the other developers, closely followed by JaGeX (for finally fixing 99 perecent of the botting issue that plagued RuneScape for years).
So yeah... go RIFT. Unorignal game, original developers.
I thought quite a while about the Innovative category. I looked up the word innovative and thought about the definition while trying to imagine the intent behind the category. As gamers, and specifically MMO gamers, we throw the word innovative around a lot.
Innovative has two main aspects to its definition. On one hand it means new, original, and novel. That is something that hasn't really been done before. That aspect of the definition made me want to vote for Glitch. It is doing something new and different. The second aspect to the definition of innovative is that of it being pioneering, ground-breaking, and state-of-the-art. That implies not only new but leading. I think RIFT definitely has done that.
Another problem we have as gamers is that we throw around buzz phrases and memes like they truths. One of the most simple and ignorant of these is "WoW Clone". Every time I see this tossed out I think, "oh, here's a poster that doesn't really think for themselves. They just hop on the meme-wagon like highschool kids at a pep rally."
RIFT is innovative for a few reasons:
Why is World of Warcraft an option in TWO categories???? What the hell...
How the hell is TOR not nominated for Game of the Year?
And DCUO and LotRO is?
TOR was only out for 15 days. Get over it.
Becuase SWTOR is not a good MMO. More like a multiplayer game with story. Massive it is not with all the sharding they do.
So according to the same people who created this vote, SWTOR isn't a 2011 year game so it can't be in the 2011 Game of the year section but is still in the 2011 Innovative section... hm Inconsistency 101.
Btw voted Rift for innovation. People here seems to forget a lot about what Trion without hype and history actually achieved and it was better than others this year, and it owns simply SWTOR in innovation, gameplay and dynamic world with related group/raid informal join that was really cool... rifts mechanisms and invasions come to mind of course. It's simply a better and more polished non-instanced mmo and developers are better and quicker than Bioware. Now let SW/Bioware FANBOIS spread their fury and lies all over the internet, real mmo lovers know better and stick to reality.
Thorbrand, you claim TOR isn't a good MMO and DCUO is on the list???
That's comedy right there.
MyPreciousess is 100% right. How can it be considered in the innovative categoy and NOT in the Best category. You're considering it a 2011 game in one, and not a 2011 game in the other? That's bats#!t crazy. That, and it shouldn't be "anticipated".. it's HERE!
Huge error in the whole poll. Let's have some constincancy. Don't care what your opinion is on TOR, it's either a 2011 or 2012 game, not both.
Yes, SWTOR is my book is the worst MMO that has ever been released.
Main problem is it is to instanced to be a good MMO. Sharding needs to go. Worlds need to open up. Voice Acting needs to go or stories need to be better. FPs are to static and boring.
There is no challenge in TOR.
They also need to fix their issues in the game.
This is a slap in the face for MMO gamers!
After stating this line:
"Yes, SWTOR is my book is the worst MMO that has ever been released."
Can you expect anyone to ever take anything you post seriously again. My god the things people will resort too when they have run out of things to say....
Best Hybrid: Bloodline Champs
Rising Star: Archeage
Most Innovative: Glitch
Most Anticipated: GW2
GOTY: EVE
All IMO OFC :P
Still it is the worst MMO ever release. Even the matrix online was better. Each their own!
No challenge in TOR? Guess you haven't played any of the other theme parks out there considering how TOR is actually more challenging then any of them.
Hmm MMORPG.com, SWTOR was still released in 2011, not 2012...Seems silly to not include it in 2011 Game of the Year, DCUO is there because?
Given the poor selection of games in these categories, a NONE OF THE ABOVE option should have been included.
My god, Rift pulling out the most innovative? Do you guys even play MMO's?
For him only stating his opinion, your taking it quite serious, eh? If you don't agree with him, just keep reading other posts and move along. If he doesn't like the game he doesn't like it. Everyone has different taste. The game you hate the most might be the best game ever made to him. So many people here take opinions too serious and have to flame the person if they disgree with their view.
How come EQ2 isnt in the GOTY vote? Beastlord class trumps anything LOTRO put out this year.
Rift still wins the tallest midget race though
we did not pick this crap, i just click it for the hell of it and jumpin on the bandwagon.
X2 for none of the above button
You put SWTOR on everything, but not GOTY?
Seems someone failed in the logic dept. RE:SWTOR
So, it's not in GotY, because it came out too late in the year, but it is in the Most Innovative category, since, I guess, you can determine that, but not GotY worthiness. Then, it's in Most Anticipated game for this year, even though it has been released?
Pick some reasoning and stick to it.
SWTOR should either be in both GotY and Innovative categories, or neither. If it's in either category, then it should not be in Most Anticipated.
Come on guys!
The game of the year is a fake list? I do not understand that selection...
Putting tOR in for any 2011 awards when it launched in late December is plain silly. Ten days later and it was 2012.
I did not vote for hype, having a award for most anticipted and rising star is just that. Two awards out of five were about hype, pointless and counterproductive.
Welcome to the Dark Side.
I still wish there was a "none of the above" button for each category, or at least a non-applicable since I really hadn't played any of the Hybrid MMO titles so couldn't really base my vote on anything.
I have to say MMO of the year was a challenge to select, I didn't really feel any of the nominees were really worthy of that designation, all had negative elements associated with them in one way or another, so in the end I went for the home team, EVE, but it wasn't really any more deserving than the other choices.
Wait how is Ridt even considered I thought it was dead ?? O well it will prbly be dead once GW2 comes out
Nah not dead. Some servers are low due to Swtor release, but there are already some ppl coming back.
Since Rift even though generic it caters to instance runners crowd + still provide very good support from Trion imo it will just survive in it's own niche. Only question remaining is how big this niche will be. Think they have chance to do ok. Maybe not great, but ok or even good.
My votes:
Hybrid: Global Agenda. It's fun, now free... what else?
Rising Star: WildStar. I like anime MMO
Most innovative: no vote (no innovative MMO till 2001)
Most Anticipated: GW2 No fee, only box
Game of the year: no vote
Why not any Free2Play category?
It should be on the Hybrid one now that it's f2p. So should DCUO.
No reason TOR isn't on game of the year list outside of schenanigans.
im sorry but rift does not deserve game of the year :/ just another version of WoW but with better graphics
SWTOR =/= innovative
should not be on game of the year, because it has not been out long enough to see how it stands up with community and replayablilty
The catagory is game of the year, not Game with the most fan bois.
and why even waste time on the first catagory? Nothing has a chance against LoL
Is there really a need for that?
How we pay for a game is no excuse for it being worse than any other game so they should all compete against eachother no matter if they are P2P, F2P, B2P or freemium.
Is World of Warcraft's nomination for INNOVATIVE a joke???
1) IMHO yes
2) IMHO freemium MMOs are like P2P and B2P (GW) are like F2P
3) but, after all, a good and/or fun game can be F2P, P2p, B2P or freemium that: who care? But "Best F2P Game of the Year" was a classic award. I really miss it (and i've that award on my blog, so... ^^)
So I can assume that since SWTOR was only out for 11 days that it WILL be included in the 2012 Game of the Year category in 12 months? I mean it's only fair right, it was released in 2011, but disqualified because of it not being released LONG enough to be in consideration. I gather this was the theory behind placing WoW in this category, since Cataclysm was released in December of 2010 (not long enough to count in that year). And EvE was on there because of Tyrannis back in May 2010 right?
I'm just trying to see if I have the logic correct here, that a game of the year doesn't in fact mean a game that was released in that calendar year, but a game or expansion that was released within the first 11 months of a calendar year? And those games that had only an expansion relased in that calendar year, are we voting on how good the expansion was, or how good the 7 year old game and it's previous 15 expansions are in total, compared to a new game as a standalone which came out 3 months ago and is still living or dying by its hype value?
What are you talking about. They gave launchdate for TSW to April 2012 over 5 months ago and the game is most decisively on track. How many other developers give their audience that amount of commitment that early.
I have not tested the game but have seen vids from other. And even me, being mostly interested in fantasy only think this game looks very clever and interesting. Keep an eye open for this game.
I liked most of the options on the poles except for Innovative's choice of WoW and the entire Rising star category. What exactly is a "Rising Star" in the mmo industry. Sounds like just another category for people to vote for the "Most Anticipated" mmo of 2011. That and WoW was never innovative, unless you considering taking everything available in the original market of its launch and lumping it into 1 solid mmo. 2011 did not bring any innovative feature for WoW either.
I also love the fact that EVE is winning for Game of the Year. As a long time EVE player I can say that had this pole gone up when the whole monaclegate thing was going down, EVE wouldnt even be competing for this. But now that CCP has dedicated so much work and effort into revamping everything about EVE, the game is hands down the most improved MMO of 2011, and still my favorite even though I am also playing Swtor and played RIFT as well.
Eve is winning game of the year, but CCP tries to milk the playerbase in monacle gate and half of them leave for Perpetuum. Now all is forgiven lol
Only wish the people who played Themeparks were that loyal.
For such a clone please tell every damn body to stop attacking it and also asking for other devs to copy them. I sure as hell know TOR fans can not stop comparing TOR launch with Rift launch.
Can vote with chrome.
I've been playing EVE since 2008, but because CCP dropped the ball I voted for Rift even though I've never played it hahahaha.
Voted for Rift as game of the year, but I dont mind at all if EVE will won, even if I played EVE only as trial and its not exactly for my taste. But I have to admit, EVE is different and pretty much a sandbox game. When people vote, they should think with their brain and not only vote following their instincts nor emotions.
Regarding Rift, the game maybe need more content and lore, but for sure it has the best and most inovative dev team in today's mmo industry. Even if I want to see them winning the award, I hope they will not get a very popular status as that will ruin the game and the great community they have now, see swtor and how they got invaded and raped by the WoW comunity. WoW should win the award for the worst and most agressive community ever in a mmo.
Surprise!! Surprise!! No " none of the above " vote option like last year. Shame on you MMORPG.fail
mmmh bad year is bad :)
There must be an option for "The whole genre is going to s***".
WoW is innovative - in the wrong way - Panda monks! LOL
Wow at the whine about "none of the above"-option lacking. If you don't think any of the listed deserve a given award, just don't vote.
Eh - whatevs
How EVE Online with such a disgusting customer support can claim to be the Game of the year?
Wow, what a substandard year...Well, I cast my vote anyway - apparently in line with the majority on every poll *shudder*
All games on the list are horrible thus I don't know what to vote. I don't even know any of the games on the "rising star" list
EVE Online game of the year hands down.
I love how most of the GOTY nominees were not even released this year? EVE Online? WoW? What the hell?
Of the ones I have played, I would have to give it to RIFT. It had a lot going for it except the fact it was too easy and happened too fast. If it wasn't made for the casual gamer exclusively, it would have been an even better game. Longer grind to level cap, and more difficult content would have been great.
But overall, their class design and dungeon design were top notch, making the game very dynamic and fun. There are definitely some flaws, but gameplay is what I enjoy most.
how WOW even fits into ANY of those catagorys i will NEVER know i mean it cant be inovative as its done NOTHING NEW!
although EVE online got of to an AWFULL start this year since cruicible its picked up and is on its way back to awesomeness so that will have to tkae GOTY for me
SW:TOR this was the biggest dissapointment since STO , promised alot but after looking at it, its pretty much the same as all the other hack and slash games and the old new thing is voice acting for quest givers, hardely something to be noteworthy.
innovative means something with new methods; advanced and original --- I can't say that some of the games listed are that... when one is almost a copy of another one in the list.
i can see why Swtor isn't on the goty and why you can vote for it in other areas. i think if youre gonna be up for a goty you need to be out for more then half the year, but since the game is playing in the last few days of 2011 that makes it so you can vote for it in other areas.
Eve online deserves the title of Best Game of 2011. Despite the fact there were some hatreds with the community, the Carbon engine is something magnificent. And Crucible is the best expansion I've ever seen.
Would be nice to see a 'none of the above' option added to these polls
Vote for The Secret World and Bloodline Champions! :-)
I can't express how much I'm looking forward to TSW ( The Secret World ). It seems so deep and well thought out. I've seen what Funcom are capable of both ways. The most fantastic games of all tim ( The Longest Journey and Dreamfall ) and of course the upset: Age of Conan.
Now they have Ragnar Tornquist back in the lead, and I just can't see it going bad. The dreamworld engine is really showing what it is capable of. Follow betacake.net and you might get a few glimps of how TSW is now. There should be a clip available there before the day is over. I saw it last night, and my jaw litteraly dropped to the ground.
I cross my fingers for a succesful launch in April!
Thanks for reminding me of these great games, may have to dust off the disks sometime soon.
BLC!
Bloodline Champions FOREVER! Best 2011 MOBA and most Innovative!
is just wrote . . gameplay is every thing on game, history, role . .real ROLE not just press keys and what item or class is better ?? / where can i get cheats for this game ?? /
If you are not Acting your character, then is no ROLE GAME, If you cant change the events of the lineal standard gameplay, then, there is no ROLE GAME PLAY, if the players have no interaction between them affecting the economy or the resources or the politics or the mechanics of gameplay Then There is Not a ROLE GAME.
Tired of Role Games without It.
1, 2 , 4 or more players hitting each other without realism against insane creatures and enlarged hyper mega beasts, just pressing the sames keys to do a couple of Statics and really bad finished Spells or Skills Or Hits over years to do insane ammount of damages to creeps or other players, with lvl restrictions, lvl 12 never can beat a lvl 18. End of the Role Game Possibilities.
All the games in the Votation are not enough to be compared with " EVE ONLINE ", where no matter if you ACTS your character in relation with other players, but a fleet Commander is a Commander, and Spy is real Spy, any player in game is functional as person and depends on his intelect to survive a Real Universe.
Here is no " Me " coming from work to tell what happend in my day and talk about it, i have to back to my real work in a fiction game, is " Me " coming to fight, spy, protect, mine, transport, scort, produce goods, Electronic Parts, Mechanic Parts, Ingeneering Parts, items, ammo, weapons, ships, to use by me or my friends, armys, corps, alliances, enemys, other players, in a Vast Universe in war for the control of all this named events in game, if i dont Play my ROLE in Game, i become obsolete, and there is no leveling thing, in eve you must study anything related with what you want to do or use. that realease a player to advance in game and give more time to the other aspect, " Interaction "
CCP deserves be the only company on the planet who really should be listed as the creator of a truly massive multiplayer role game online.
All the rest is just a masive multiplayer game online.
PD: and CCP is the first Company in cross plataforms with " DUST514 " the first real ROLE game FPS, where you go to be needed to protect or destroy in planets the resources of any player, corporation or alliance that hire you and if you have a little time for you, you can live the game instead to just press a keyboard.
Cause players are there for years before you, and they build the Empire that Eve Online is on this Days.
Eve online is leading the polls for game of the year on mmorpg.com. No surprise there;)
The Secret World PWNs for the the most promising upcoming game of 2012.
Funny the guy is from Canada...so stop bashing the USA...
Anyway:
Best Hybrid: LoL-Only one I enjoyed.
Rising Star: I chose Wildstar, though I knew it wouldn't be winning. Just looks coolest too me.
Most Innovative: Rift-Honestly I don't know, but I found the Rift and class design a lot more different than anything in Swtor.
Most Anticipated: Planetside 2-Something very different to play instead of another fantasy game like GW2.
Game of the Year: WoW-All the choices sucked, but WoW is the only one I enjoyed.
Have to say The Secret World is easily the most promising for me. Sure GW2 looks good but I'm not sure I can stomach levelling in yet another fantasy setting. I mean, the setting is bad. And then there is the levelling.
The "culprit?" The culprit is IE 9. ;)
EVE is forever.
There were a lot of people with Firefox complaining at the start of it. My Opera worked excellent after Mike fixed the counter (on the first page).
Two things.
How are those games that aren't out up for the "Rising Star" award?
How are all those games that have been out for years and years up for game of the year?
I could not agree more. Glitch was not that interesting to me as a long-term game, but the ideas were incredibly innovative, and the way the game plays and how players interact with it and with their characters is so new, and refreshing. Without a doubt it is the most innovative on the list. There is no contest.
1. Hybrid-WoT Something different is FRESH.
2. Rising-Firefall small game so much attention agains big budget NO BRAINER.
3. Innovative-Glitch come on others in list are not by longshot innovative get real here.
4. Anticipation-GW2 Can't deny this one is most attention WHORE.
5. GotY - EVE offcorse way ahead of other ones.
Btw REDICULOUS CONTEST with games out for so many years at least pick some indies instead BIG BUDGET TITLES rediculous.
Bad move mmorpg.com you LOSING it.
pay no attention to the poll, this list is advertisment for the games by mmorpg.
I don't know about the second one, but I think Rising Star is partially based on the hype and attention the title generated over the past year, and since MMORPG.com has a ratings system specifically dedicated to hype, it makes sense. I voted for Archeage, myself. I hadn't even heard of it before this Fall, and it's looking amazing and has people talking.
EVE - GoTY this year and most years. When other games add content it's just more of the same - more dungeons, more raids, more loot. When EVE adds content it adds more things for the player to do.
Im sticking with TSW, for most my votes. no other company is willing to stray from the cookie cutter path like TSW is.
MMORPG, what did you do? Why is there EVE and WoW to vote for?
This year we had releases of DCUO, , Xsyon, Rift, Earthrise, ToR and maybe some I don´t know about. Why do you allow the Nostalgia-voting?
Please guys, just one fking MMOrpg awards without bullshit. Just one year.
Is it too much to ask for?
Edited
EVE is love
EVE is forever
EVE Online is leading wtih 49%. I think it needs more votes...
eve is more than 50%.... go eve
EVE is forever <3
we can see how distorted these polls are.. man..
EVE!!! i made an account today and have one post..
edit: just went over the past pages and it's all over this thread. lol.
I've never played Eve, but the voting is looking suspicious. How many of these votes share the same IP number, I wonder. Before anyone barks about my sharing in conspiracy theories, that kind of thing has happened numerous times on sites way bigger than MMORPG, so it is quite possible, if not probable.
I played all five of the games in the GOTY catagory, and voted for EVE. I'm not a huge fan of it, but I enjoyed it for a while, and consider the best of those five. Especially considering how well its aging. Other MMOs I enjoyed more in the past are unplayable now, due to feeling so dated, but not EVE.
My second choice would be Rift, because it was the most fun in the short term, but behind EVE in depth, longevity, and innovation, which all come into consideration for me.
Anyhow, just FWIW, the rationale behind my single vote in that catagory.
Most innovative = SWTOR?? don't make laugh, there's nothing new in that game.
EVE should be in that list, even 8 years after realease
EVE Online FTW
Wow, it truly was a year to forget when it comes to new mmos, if 'most innovative' list has to include wow, rift and swtor. So out of 5 games 3 are basically copies of each other with maybe 1 distinctive feature per game, and that grants them spot in 5 most innovative games.
Hopefully 2012 wont be anything like this or we'll end up with wow newest expansion as most innovative game of the year :P
Agree. That's is very similar rationale to my own.
Cause sorry which game out of those 5 should have my vote on GOTY?
WoW ?
Lotro?
Please...
Those games already reached their peak and and in twighlight "zone" if you know what I mean.
Out of this limited choice EvE Online is best option, even though playing a spaceship (practically) is not my thing. Still it is one of most succesful games out there +definately diffrent and more innovative than most.
Just 2011 was so weak year in mmorpg's (last few years were tbh) that I don't think any other game could claim this title.
LOTRO FTW!!!!
The Rise Of Isengard Expansion is really great, and the new Skirmish Mark system/Rep system is a huge improvement.
Also, people who place this game in the WOW group as the games who have reached their peak, they are wrong and have obviously not been following recent events on LOTRO. LOTRO is still gaining members and is NOWHERE near it's maximum.
LOTRO for game of the year!!!! A game with the best content of any other game combined!!! (obviously)
EVE as best MMo all the way, especially after Crucible. GW2 for most anticipated
Not a chance for EvE as best MMO given Monocle-gate and CCP's shitty treatment of their fans.
They should have had a "None of the Above" choice, I would have voted for that.
GAME OF THE YEAR - Vote for EVE Online, the largest player universe in world!
No shards, no multiple servers, only one universe, 50k+ players online all time! More then 2 milions players.
[The] Best economy, best sandbox, best PvP experience with loosing penalty.
You are not alone in our space!
http://www.eveonline.com
Eve Online is the only MMORPG on here sadly.
Guys, really, two WOW-clones fighting for the "most innovative" award?
I know, seriously.. I voted for Glitch :P
Really? You guys folded and put SW:TOR in the running? I know it technically came out in 2011, but come on. 3 weeks is enough for everyone to fully know the game, the direction its going, and what it will be in a few months? Was proud of MMORPG.com for awhile when they said they didn't want to add it into the running but would be in the 2012 one. Don't hate the game, just dislike that people fold under pressure.
As far as the results go, its about what I figured. A few surprises did show up. Didn't expect such a strong showing for EVE though. Would have been nice to see a larger voting poll for more games that are in the genre.
Well said.
I'm sorry but while EVE is a great game and all, there are only ~350,000 active subscriptions.
And I know a whole lot of people who have 2 or 3 accounts (sometimes more). So the number of players is far below that number.
You're right but you see, in EVE you easily play with 25 to 10 times more players than WoW because there's only one world. WoW with its 10million players (and each other GOTY listed but EVE) splits its community in, i don't know, 2k? 4k? 5k players per server?
I was wondering about it too. But it's two WoW clones, Counter-Strike on tanks, Glitch that is actually not released yet (so i feel like it's not right to even put it in 2011 vote) and DC Universe Online....hmm not much choice. I think i'll choose DC.
Why is DUST514 not an option for "Most Anticipated" #iamdissapoint
Good point, but it will be on PS3 does it count or only PC games ?
EVE Online... Best game of the year!
No need to say more realy... After years of playing MMO's and basicly "Playing" "all single" game in this sites list i found EVE...
I have never seen before another game like this one... game totaly driven by the players in terms of games economy and "Wars" betwen corporations/Alliance (or guilds as u prefer)... and the company developing EVE actualy listens to its player base! Something we all know its very hard to come by :)
After playing EVE for awhile i kinda felt in love by the fact tht CCP (Company tht created EVE) even makes events like the "Alliance tournement" and broadcasts everything online like if it was a show! they have many movies in youtube (in their own youtube channel) tht tlk about the game and its Development while it goes!
Hell wht other company actualy pays airplane tickets for their "players advisers" (wht we call CSM...group of players choosen by the players tht give advices on wht needs to be changed or fixed and wht not) to go to Sweden for meetings with the CCP's??
So yeah... EVE Online... Game of the year everytime boys and gals :P
Regards, Z
DUST will be exclusively on PS3...
Will be a merge of platforms betwen DUST in PS3 and EVE Online on the PC! :)
Regards, Z
EVE has on "Average" 30,000 clientsonline during the day GMT time...
This afternoon i kept on seeing 25k/30k... during the night theres always 45k/50k online (all this in GMT time)!
Regards, Z
Same here.
EVE for life
EVE has no rival on planet Earth game market
O7
Eve Online Rullez.
I will return to EVE when I am allowed to use a Rorqual in Empire! Anyway EVE does rule.
EVE for game of the year!
Same here. Several of the games listed in the categories I haven't played before so I didn't vote in those games, but I have certainly played Eve. True, it might be years old, but CCP is constantly striving to keep it at the cutting edge...and they certainly are. The logistical complexity and challenge that you can get out of it, the tactics, the planning...every other GotY contender listed above COMBINED doesn't even come close to Eve, and if CCP can get Dust514 working properly as well...the words to describe just how awesome that will be don't exist. Good games look to Eve for inspiration, and even Perpetuum, which is basically a 90% ripoff of Eve with a ground-based battlemech flavor mixed in, is a mere shadow of Eve.
I've played WoW, I've played Rift (in fact I was one of the beta testers for that one), I've looked into many of the other games (including LOTRO and SWTOR) and checked out classes, gameplay videos, guides, etc and found nothing really new in them so I didn't bother downloading the client. I don't care what you naysayers say; Eve Online completely crushes them the way you would crush a slug with your foot. It is the ONLY feasible choice for Game of the Year, period.
erm...am I going crazy, or did my last post just become the description for each of the voting categories?
(update) Oh, nope, there it goes back to normal after I made this one. Ignore.
Choices here are not necessarily my choices so not all categories got my votes. How you could leave SWTOR out of Game of the Year is beyond me tho.
Love how two WoW-clones are beating WoW for most innovative.
Yikes. I didn't realize what a terrible year 2011 was for MMORPGs.
Hybrid MMOs: I had no interest in playing any of these. That's just personal taste, though.
Rising Star: "None of the Above." I don't expect any of these to exceed 250k North American subs - except WildStar, which I don't expect to ship at all. ArcheAge may do well in Korea.
Most Innovative: Based on the choices offered, perhaps this category should be titled "Most Competent." None of these games are really innovative (except perhaps Glitch) - they just chose a gimmick feature and didn't screw it up.
Most Anticipated: I default to Guild Wars 2 only because I find the rest either uninteresting or likely to be spoiled by tedious grinds (ArcheAge). But as time passes and GW2 is still seems no closer to ship, I've found my ardor cooling. It's less accurate to say I'm "anticipating" it than it is to say I'll pick it up whenever it comes out.
Game of the Year: RIft was a flash in the pan for me - interesting for about six months, but it had no hook to keep me playing. SWTOR is WoW with VO. Fine if you like it, but I'll pass. The best prospects seem to be the old standbys; EVE, LotRO, and WoW. EVE's year was marred by extremely bad corporate decisions, with results measured in layoffs. They're back doing what they do best, but I wouldn't award GotY for fixing your clownshoes mistakes. LotRO released a tepid, feature-free expansion. It's okay, but not great. And WoW's playerbase is contracting at a rate that would be catastrophic to a more svelt gorilla.
So... bleh.
Thanks for your participation everyone! Voting has closed and, while the results are obvious, we'll be making an official announcement and feature next week!
Closed!
