Top Ten Games That Should Be MMOs

MMORPG.com Managing Editor Jon Wood counts down the Top 10 video games that should be made into MMOs.

The game World of Warcraft has become synonymous with the MMORPG genre, and why shouldn't it? The game's subscriptions numbers speak volumes, its boxes dominate shelves in video game stores, TV shows parody it while its commercials run on another channel. The reasons for WoW's dominance in the video game industry are many and varied and could be debated for hours. One thing that can not be argued though is that Warcraft's popularity as a pre existing video game franchise played a role.

With that in mind, MMORPG.com presents a list of the top ten video games that should be made into MMOs:

# 10 Kingdom Hearts Online

In 2002, the company now known as Square Enix launched a game that combined its popular Final Fantasy series with an unlikely partner in Disney. It melded FF characters with classic Disney characters and settings. While the premise might sound absurd at the outset, audiences enjoyed it and the game spawned a number of sequels.

Kingdom Hearts Online would give both Square Enix and Disney Interactive a new and interesting title to add their MMO libraries.

"Rejected Selection" - Tetris Online

Players can choose from up to seven different classes: Straight Line, L Shape, J Shape, Cube, S Shape, Z Shape and T Shape. Each class has its own role, but players must work together to accomplish their goals. The quests may be repetitive, but players will love the fast paced action.

#9 Madden Online / EA Sports Online

Nobody does sports games as well as EA. They have games in every major sport, headlined by the consistently best selling Madden football franchise. With sport-based MMOs gaining momentum within the genre, it may be time for the Sports branch of the mighty Electronic Arts to try their hands at an MMO.

Developers could focus on their flagship Madden franchise and make a football game, or take advantage of their many professional league licenses to let players try to develop multi-sport talents to compete against the best in the sport of their choosing.

#8 Battlefield Online

The Battlefield franchise has always been about online player vs. player action. Soldiers compete against each other on their choice of a number of maps. Over the game's last few incarnations, moves have been made to add an RPG style experience and levelling system so that players can advance their soldiers, giving them access to stronger equipment and abilities. It wouldn't be too much of a stretch to take the RPG transformation one step further and meld the maps into a single world, giving the MMO community an updated modern war game with a familiar face.

"Rejected Selection" - WWE Smackdown vs Raw Online

Create your own wrestler and battle other players for the World Heavyweight Championship. Quests include hitting your friend with a steel chair, keeping Hulk Hogan's ego in check, posing for the crowd and passing your steroids test.

# 7 Age of Empires Online

Blizzard started their move into the MMORPG realm by adapting an RTS series, and Microsoft could do the same with their popular franchise (now that Ensemble has been shuttered). Realm vs. Realm action is a perfect fit as some of the greatest civilizations from Earth's history battle for supremacy.

Historical MMOs don't have a fantastic track record, at least when it comes to Ancient Rome (Imperator, Gods & Heroes), but mix together all of the popular empires within a single era of history, add a little bit of war and violence, a crafting and discovery system, a city building (and destroying) system and Microsoft might be looking at a hit MMO.

#6 BioShock

The massive popularity of 2K's submerged first person shooter alone merits BioShock's consideration to be a candidate for an MMO makeover. If you add on the game's retro flavour, its combination of technology and super powers that look a lot like magic and its well crafted storyline, it becomes a no brainer.

The entertainment world is abuzz these days with prequels, so why not make BioShock Online a prequel that dates back to the 1950s as strife began to grow in Rapture leading to the revolt and eventual breakdown of their civilization?

"Rejected Selection" - Pac Man Online

This Player vs. Player MMO allows gamers to choose one of two factions, the Pac Men or the Ghosts. The peace loving Pac Men advance primarily through gather quests, feeding their race's unquenchable hunger for white pellets and are occasionally rewarded with a cherry or strawberry rare drop. The ghosts, on the other hand, are a warlike race, defending their homeland from the insatiable Pac Men. Which side will you choose?

Yeah, seriously. How could someone just brush over two of the most popular rpg's to date.

Elder scrolls online: tying all the old elder scrolls like morrowind, oblivion and daggerfall together and an expanded new territory. WoooHooo, it would have blizzard shakin in its shoes.

and secondly, Just call it Fallout World Online, starting with Fallout 3 and then just expanding across the united states and just think of the scope of the game if they could expand to europe and asia. They would never have a lack of content, aboveground and also underground instances. Are you kidding me?

I know bethesda has it's own formula and it seems to be very successful for them, I was just a bit dissapointed when FO3 had no online functions. Oh well, maybe in the future.

5. GAH now i have images of Mario tossing PokeBalls at Bowser while dancing around mushrooms.

4. YES!

3. would definatly bring innovation back to the genre

Keep the RTS aspect and allow me to cultivate a squad that I can turn into an army with the guild creation tab. Think of mixing the core elements of Atlantica Online wich I am a fan of into the warhammer 40k lore-iverse. Give me the ability to expand into different worlds via airships that I can level up as well as well as my squad and we have the yen to play Starcraft online covered. Start with one main character and a few soldiers/followers and level up to a maximum number that is interchangable with only certain alignments/races and classes.

Obviously Orcs and Sisters of Battle will never get along. That handles the racial part of it. Need to expand into a different race, no problem just recruit or do a questline for it if you are a proper alignment.

Hey wait a sec, why should I play this game?

So my guild can band together and act as an army?

YES!

And I can also own a city on planet X? Or maybe eventually own a planet?

YES!

Fully customizable armor and weapons?

YES!

And I can build a fortress/warship etc for my guildmates to recoup and train in?

YES!

Is there alot of PVP, or PVE if I'm not in the mood to fight?

YES and YES!

How much is this game?

$50 for software and $10 a month.

Ok, sounds great! Where can I download the software and sign up!

Umm, sorry you can't; the game doesn't exist online just as a single player RTS, they put all the IP and effort into Warhammer Online the fantasy Genre. Y'know that one, really laggy, boring and set in a played out single avatar fantasy setting exactly like WoW, FFXI, Everquest and a host of similar MMORPG's?

Meh, to the OP's choices. A few I'd like to see made into MMO's

10 - Something based on GGR Martin's "A Song of Ice and Fire"

Not sure if this would make a good MMO (thats why its 10), but I like the books.

9 - Planetside 2

It WAS a great game, it needs to be redone, modernized, disversified, and balanced.

(I know its not 100% on topic as it had been made already)

8 - Road Warrior

We need a game that mixes a good post-apocalypse MMO with vehicles (Fallen Earth may be the answer).

7 - Serenity/Babylon 5

Cant decide which would be better. I like the idea of the low-tech Serenity (Firefly) setting. But I think Babylon 5 would have a better diversety to its lore and races.

6 - AD&D World of Greyhawk

Set in a quasi-medieval time, it a low/medium magic world. I'm not a big fan of the Forgotten Relms setting, its such a high-magic setting it nothing but magic as technology.

5 -  BF2 (BF 2142)

Either of them would make a so-so game. But we need a good FPS MMO. Personally I'd think my #1 would be better.

4 - Cthulhu

Nuff' said.

3 - Shadowrun

A world of super corps and where magic has returned to the modern world. Wiki it, it would make a badass setting.

2 - World of Darkness (CCP has the rights, just a matter of waiting)

Vampires, werewolfs, mages, all in the modern world. For those who dont know think Bloodrayne, or Vampire the Masquerade (which is based off of WoD).

1 - MechWarrior Online.

Everything from space battles, to air combat, to Mech combat, to vehicle combat, to soldier combat. Absolutly would make the most badass MMO.

With this list, Jon was going for gaming franchises. Those, while they have loads of video games, I am sure you would agree are not "primarily" about video games.

I suspect a future list will include a list of non-gaming centric IP that should be MMOed.

Several months ago I found an announcement that EA had set aside millions for a Battlefield style MMO. That's all the news I've ever seen and yes it was that vague. So, we'll probably see a Battlefield Online within the next 2 years. I can only hope they lean a little to the realistic side of things rather than the arcade side. Battlefield 2 was great, but it was a little too much arcade to hit people in the face twice or in the body 7 times before they hit the dirt.

Oh and Fallout and The Elder Scrolls are already being made into MMOs Stradden? Interplay is definitely never going to produce a MMO as they're a disaster of a company now and Bethesda is very hush hush about what they're currently working on. Do you know something we don't?

I am a horror movie fan, zombie fan, Valve fan and L4D fan, but this is a ridiculously bad suggestion. L4D only works because it lacks any evolving world. As an MMO it would lose all of its defining features and since L4D has no real story there isn't a whole lot to expand upon.

L4D is fun because of the horror story cliques and relatively high tension combat. It just wouldn't work as an MMO.

Ok, I thought Blizzard announced that the Starcraft universe was going to be setting for the new MMO a month or two ago. (Thought I had read this on the Blizzard website... maybe I'm wrong.) If I'm correct here, that means you should have had a different #1 on there. Otherwise, Starcraft could make a great MMO if Blizzard doesn't fail at good game mechanics like WoW.

While all the 10 mentions (and the some 'didn't quite make it' add-ins) have all been solid games on their own right, I didn't see any smaller titles that might actually make a solid MMO.

Fallout definitely is slated for production into an MMO, but Interplay's financial issues and legal tie-ups have this on hold and possibly even just vaporware. Interplay can't raise capital due to legal issues and Bethesda hasn't made any comments about potentially picking it up.

Mechwarrior is one I'd love to see, so my vote is with you guys. Several games have mechs in them, but none really measure up. I really think this is one game that should be completely PvP-centric with the ability to establish bases for resource production. I think it would be a great candidate for a single-server system, too.

While we're on the subject of old FASA IPs... Shadowrun! While only two actual video games have been developed based on this franchise (PC/XBOX360 and SNES), the game has a great background and versitile gameplay that gets away from that annoying level grind. The biggest issue with this game is factoring in certain game mechanics that could put a character out of commission for a year or more (game time) such as recovery from cybertech implanting/upgrading. Neither of the past games has done the original RPG justice, though.

I was just going to mention vampire the masquerade but instead of just of that they should incorperate all the stories that White Wolf has into 1 online game called White Wolf Online that way you have vampire hunters, werewolf hunters, mages, everything in 1 big game that spans the whole globe.

I'm always amazed that Kingdom Hearts exists at all. Used to be a producer at Disney and similar ideas were always axed because they might mix different properties in the same setting, which is directly counter to policy. It mystifies me.

In any case... my list would be totally different. Some of the ideas make little sense to me. For instance,  I'm not sure what the point of a Madden MMO would be, considering most of the players of sports sims are perfectly happy playing games against friends. So either this MMO would see tens of thousands of NFL team owners... or I guess you'd be playing a single player. I'm having trouble envisioning the career path of a place-kicker character.

Some of them seem done or overdone, a Neverwinter Nights MMO? I mean, yeah, great fantasy setting... seeing as it's a D&D setting and all, but do we need another generic fantasy MMO? Do we need another D&D MMO?  Then there's Grand Theft Auto, it's a great idea, but isn't someone making something pretty much identical to that already?

And some that I'd love to see are totally missing. I mean,  I'd have to have a MechWarrior MMO. Yes, there have been online Battletech things but not really open MMOstyle and  none that I've noticed since computers started handling more than 256 colors at once, but there hasn't been a good "western" giant robot game in ages. (All anime aside, I refuse to believe that any military would build a giant war machine that uses a sword as main weapon... k?)

I'd also like to see Interstate 76 come to the MMO world. An MMO with the same "Wow, I'm really in a 65 chevy with a flamethrower on the roof!" feel to it would not only be great fun, but spark a renaissance in the PC steering wheel accessories market.

The ability to lock your doors, gaurd the city. or be the badgguys and raid the city. With the battle system you would really have a chance gear or no gear.

Thats a whole concpt of city raiding and duals, yet alone what leaving the city would be like...

White Wolf did several settings all based in the same "world". They could be played as stand alone or mixed and matched.

The grand campaign setting was called;

World of Darkness or WoD.

It includes...

Vampire: The Masquerade (the best known and most popular)
Werewolf: The Apocalypse
Mage: The Ascension
Wraith: The Oblivion
Changeling: The Dreaming
Hunter: The Reckoning
Mummy: The Resurrection
Demon: The Fallen

(And others)

CCP (the creators of Eve Online) has the rights to this setting. And I'm 100% positive they plan on making a MMO out of it. And considering how popular vampires are (and horror themes in general) they should do quit well with it.

10. No personal interest in IP. First impression is it's a kiddos game because of Disney. Don't think I'd let my Disney age children play an MMO (if I had Disney age children, or any children for that matter, lol).

9. Why? People can already take control of teams and play each other online as it is. The only reason I could see to do it is so that people could play an individual player on a team. I just don't see the MMO community at large willing to do that. THe sports community may embrace it to a degree, but you'll never get "wow" numbers sarcasm and that's what matters, right!? /sarcasm.

8. Aren't they attempting this with Huxley? Wasn't this attempted with Planetside?

7. No better way to further drive a spike in between people and ratchet up nationalism than to accurately reflect real heritage in a game that allows pvp and tea bagging and trash talking. My prediction: AoEO gives us the first international MMO homicide case OR sparks a real life conflict between to neighbor nations as a loss online prompts the zealous to go next door and "prove" they are better.

6. Can't say anything negative about this one as my wife loved the game (and reads my posts on occaision).

5. See #10.

4. Ok, this one I could see being a winner of an idea. They'd have to stick with the d20 system and not, I repeat not do what Turbine did with their one shot at it. Normal questing MMO with a huge wide world to go explore. From the streets of Neverwinter to the Weimic tribal villages of The Shaar. (note, don't care if they include Thay. I'm not going there even if they do. Those wizards have itchy fireball fingers)

3. Zombie flicks or related "entertainment" are like NASCAR to me. I don't want to spend 3 hours watching people make left turns (though those right turns can be interesting) and I don't "get it" about running from and killing zombies hour upon hour upon hour.

2. Yes. So everyone that wants to be a "thug" or "gangsta" can go here and I don't have to /ignore so often.

1. Just have a feeling if I don't like WoW's gameplay, I'm pretty sure I won't like WoW gameplay with a Starcraft skin. I mean, really, who honestly thinks Blizzard is going to move away from the WoW formula (which, ahem, they created). Ok, the irony, who better to make a move away from the WoW formula than blizzard. Take Starcraft and make a polished MMO in the mold of the first generation MMOs where all of us nerds and geeks took our "fantasy worlds" seriously and the world creators did too, realizing there is more to a MMO world than combat.

Meh, I'm sure someone would play any of those. The only one I would be interested in playing would be Neverwinter Nights Online, though. And that's only if it got a "proper" MMO treatment and not the D&D Online one.

But Im very, very, VERY happy to hear they are allocating more resources to it.

I'd love to see Shadowrun, Fallout (1&2) and Battletech made into MMOs. I just don't trust ANY developer right now to handle them even remotely respectfully and carefully. So, I'm content with them not being MMOs for the moment.

What's sad is that Smith and Tinker, comprised of the some of the original FASA founders, seems to be more interested in making toys and such, not computer/video games. What's even more depressing (aside from 10/07 being the last time any news was posted to the site) is that they used to have an "team" section, listing what team members they had and some bio info. Now that's gone, and their Job listings page is empty. Can you say belly up? Wouldn't surprise me. So, two of the greatest gaming IPs go down in flames (computer/video wise; thank goondess the pencil and paper licenses are with people who have an actual interest in keeping the worlds alive) because their current handlers, and ironically creators, are so short-sighted as to not use them.

There is enough content on Faerun that you could make a 10 year MMO with proper funding that would blow all the other competition away! The Underdark alone would be an amazing expansion. Very much agree with what some have already mentioned...

MechWarrior Online could be done so nicely.  Different clans.  Get your credits to upgrade your mech(s) equipment.  Open field PvP, capturing bases, resources, etc.

Fallout Online would be great too.  Although I've never actually played any of the single player Fallout games, I'm STILL looking for that "Gamma World" MMO experience.  I know one day it will happen (Fallen Earth maybe?)

I heard someone mention a Planet of the Apes MMO in one thread.  That could be interesting.  Maybe three factions (Apes, Men, Mutated Men).  Might be a good idea.

I personally would like to see a Call of Duty MMO.  Something decent done in a World War 2 setting.  (and sorry, but World War 2 Online just doesn't do it for me).  I envisioned it like Planetside.  Where levels mattered in the equipment choices you had, but didn't mean much when you are toe to toe on the battlefield.  A level 5 player vs a level 25 player are evenly matched, and skill, not level, determines the winner.  Maybe even instead of levels, you could mark your progess as ranks (Captain, Major, etc...)

And speaking of Planetside....um...Planetside 2 please.

Lastly, anyone who comes up with the idea to break the whole "kill, loot, level" treadmill that make up 99% of the MMOs today, I'll buy a lifetime subscription.  Thanks...

No, its not football, but a football game would also not translate well into a fully PC played sport. It could work, and I'm sure people would play it. Nevertheless, one of their franchises is already there.

Secondly.... Uh, WESTERN MMO? GUN Online?  Who doesn't want to roam the plains of the old west, wander the dusty woodplanked sidewalks of a ghost-town-to-be? Throw down in a game of cards against the nastiest currs around. This is a travesty that this is not an MMO in production.

Check out a sample video of one of the 360 single player titles. If they took the naruto world, put it in a ninja village with clans vs ninja vs clans, pvp and pve, used the darker less kid focused Manga (comic) undertone, this would be the best mmorpg franchise to work with since WoW.

I remember it very well, as we had begged and pleaded for months for MO to have one, before Starvault sent Stradden enough info to warrant their spot. Dunno, Lodoss war is ok but the world isn't amazing. I rather had a "The slayers" MMO :).

But, yes, Anime style works well for an MMO as long as they dont use it as an excuse for bad graphics as so many F2P games do. High polygon count and good shadows/lightning is a must.

And as long as they stay away from cheesy stuff like DBZ and Pokemon. Robotech/Macross would make a nice MMO or Trigun also. Hellsing for that matter as a horror MMO (The scene where the nazi vampires invade London in zeppelins would be... intresting...).

With this list, Jon was going for gaming franchises. Those, while they have loads of video games, I am sure you would agree are not "primarily" about video games.

I suspect a future list will include a list of non-gaming centric IP that should be MMOed.

You don't know much about Pokemon do you?

Pokemon is originally a video game franchises, saying it can't be a video game that gets turned into a MMORPG is like saying you can't turn in Starcraft because it has books, etc based on it.

Anyway, some more options;

* Harvest moon/Rune Factory MMORPG (this is easy to understand)

* Half-Life (huge universe, could work extremely well when going into the smaller details)

* Quake/Doom?

* Dragon Quest

* CHRONO TRIGGER!!!111 (wow how many new and interesting ideas could you come up with the Chrono series?)

The Persistent Worlds (PWs) some of the people created (and still run to this day in some cases) for that game were nothing short of impressive. Complete, functional trade-based economies, fully realized/scripted gladiator arenas, deep and evolving plots, and on and on... They were basically really great MMOs shrunken down to a much smaller scale.

I always thought that if some of the better PW designers/coders for NwN were to get together and work on a MMO, they could do some amazing stuff.

As for BioShock online? Hmmm... I dunno, the environment's large... but kinda confined for a game that would support and keep tens, or potentially hundreds of thousands of people entertained for the long term.

Well, I'm the Managing Editor of this website, and I've been working here for nearly five years. What are your credentials? Also, I spell my name Wood, not Woods. Like what you throw in the fire, not what you walk through on a summer day.

As has been said previously in this thread, he idea of these lists is to encourage discussion. There is absolutely no way to create a list like this that is going to make everyone happy. Your opinions are going to be different from mine. Just for those of you who might be wondering, here's the approach I took to create my list: First, I discounted any game that was currently being made. This removes World of Darkness, Fallout and others. Second, I wanted to take a look at games from a number of different genres. I threw in Sports, FPS, Survival, Children's, Historical, War, RTS, Open World and more. Personally, I think what an MMO is is evolving beyond just RPGs. What's happening is games from other genres are making their way in and incorporating time tested RPG elements into their games, creating a new and more expansive breed of MMORPG. The idea with this list was to be as diverse as possible to open up discussion on the matter.

Now, that's not saying that I don't look back and say oops on a couple. For example, When I played Mass Effect, I remember thinking... "This would make a great MMO". I blanked on it when I wsa writing the article. Anyone who writes something like this will always tell you that they remembered something after publish that should have been there.

I agree. I am shocked these were missing from the list. Both would be great MMO themes.

Also, I don't think Neverwinter Nights should be on the list. The reason is that it was already done. The very fist MMORPG I ever played was the original 2D Neverwinter Nights playable only over AOL *gag*. That was a loooong time ago.

I could totally see this. Definitely a skill-based system with taijutsu, genjutsu, ninjutsu and "med-jutsu" branches. While the basic skills (shuriken throwing, running, basic chakra control for standing on water or the sides of trees) would be available to everyone, the village you pick would affect specific powers and clothing available. And you could have a summoning power - maybe have some quests that would involve working with frogs/dogs/snakes/chimps and when you've reached a certain partnership level, you gain the ability to summon them.

It could work...

If they ever do decide to make a Forgotten Realms mmo then i see that doing very well if done right(not wow). MechWarriors would also be a worthy mmo as well as some of the other suggestions i see from players.

There are certain things that you need make up an mmo, while some of these games listed certainly have immersive quality that isn't enough.   Two notable mentions I might also point out have some issues.

Bioshock certainly had an awesome environment and story base but that game came under attack early on for good reason. They gave the players the ability to chase down and disembowel little girls that behaved so much like the real thing it was scary. It may be violating  a sacred cow to question the sanity of creative genius game devs but I have no love for sacred cows so I will. The guy who came up with the little sisters as targets idea needs professional help.   It was a magnificent piece of art but it was still disturbing.   Nothing new btw to artist though out history.   In WoW we have people dragging around the orphans so they can have fun with the idea of tormenting children and you want to give them little sisters in a progressive mmo? No.

GTO? One of the most controversial game series ever and you want to give people the opportunity to live in it. No, no, no and ... no. Srsly.

An mmo is persistent, immersive and dynamic.   It is consistently evolving and reinventing it self in modifications.   You need a good frame for that in the foundation of the storyline and not a storyline that could potentially evolve out of control.   That being said some of the suggestions by replies here seem much better suited imo for the job.   Better yet there are some great fantasy novel series out there that would make awesome mmo games.

Battlefield should not be made as an MMO. I'll say that Heroes is a good exception and that the game is pure solid but any serious BF game should remain how it is. The FPS communities has a competitive scene with major events and such, making an MMO will destroy this.

Neverwinter night

Again, no... the beauty of NWN is that the players gets to make content and allow other players to play in it. You have story tellers, building and planning out an epic adventure over several months. It's basically D&D with a graphical interface.

NWN MMO = Dungeon and Dragons onlines

Left 4 Dead

While I like the idea, do you seriously think it's going to work? Did you actually play L4D for a few months?

I don't think so...

As for Nintendo, Kingdom Hearts, Madden, age of empires here's the a simple quote...

Awesome + awesome does not always equal Awesome.

I'm suprise you didn't mention Command and Conquer instead of Age of Empires. At least C&C has 3 distinct faction, with 3 distinct goals and a storyline with 200 years of background and wars.

Battlefield already has an MMO and it's BF heroes or WWII Online. Do you know what happens to noobs in WWII online? They get to walk 45 minutes in the wrong direction only to get killed by a sniper 1 mile away lol...

The world of Bioshock could potentially make a cool MMO but only the world, not the game itself.

Basicaly, aside from Starcraft, I have no idea where you got your ideas but seriously, as a writer you could have looked a bit deeper. I like what you normaly write but this time, you we're lazy and that's pretty sad. You did exactly what most companies do lately, you simply picked a bunch of random popular names and placed the awesome tag on them. Might as well say that Unreal Tournament could make an MMO... after all it has more then 10 distinct factions, a huge storyline and enough worlds to crush Starcraft to it's knees. Yet, you went on and named something like Nintendo worlds online?

It seems like Nintendo would sooner gnaw it's nunchucku controllers off than have anything to do with an MMO.

They've made it no secret that they're targeting gamers not even old enough to cross the street by themselves. That's why the Wii and DS make full use of garbage friend codes and the most un-fun multiplayer modes ever (Only multiplayer over the internet counts here, you can still squeeze some fun out of a group of friends huddled around a TV.) Nintendo's just too worried about predators and other unsavory types roaming the servers to risk putting in place such an open system.

It is a pretty interesting idea though. A Mario World Online, although I doubt humans would be a playable race, world PvP between the mushroom people and goombas would be a blast.

All the other suggestions were interesting as well, except Starcraft Online, which is cliché. Everyone wants one, and Korea would go nuts.

Hate to burst your bubble at your list but there has already been a Neverwinter Nights MMO. Backed by AOL and published by SSI back in 1993. It was one of the first true MMOs out there, even if it was dialup. It had avatars you could interact with and quests. Gameplay was, at the time, very advanced and there was several hundred players in the game pretty much all the time.

So unless BioWare would be able to acquire the rights to produce another Neverwinter Nights MMO from AOL (since BioWare still holds the Neverwinter Nights licenses for single player versions) and given their ability to produce quality games and their new found jump into the MMO arena with SW:TOR, that would probably be the only way such a game could come to light.

However, I would also love to see a Mass Effect MMO, given the way the single player game is setup, it wouldnt seem to be that difficult to make a MMO that plays in the same fashion, and it would have virtually unlimited expansion ability, cause they could just add new worlds to create more quests and areas to explore, something that they should have focused on doing in the now dead Tabula Rasa.

There are plenty of fantasy based MMOs out there so a good sci-fi one in addition to SW:TOR would go a long way.

I know I'm kind of old to still be interested in Pokemon, but it's not like I wouldn't be interested in such a thing. After all, I think the concept of capturing and fighting with monsters is used in other online games. Why not make it an official Pokemon one?

Kinda late to answering this, but...

They did make .hack//Fragment, which is an MMO form of .hack, but it failed so miserably that they didn't bring it Stateside, and it closed rather quickly.

I think people are more interested in the storyline and graphical appeal of the .hack games than the actual MMO aspects themselves.

There was a Shadowrun mmorpg in development. However, Microsoft pulled permission to make it from the developer when they decided to make the Shadowrun game for XBOX 360. Considering how that game bombed due to Microsofts' stupidity of making an rpg into a "Quake" clone, plus the fact Microsoft is now butthurt over that fact, I highly doubt they'll ever give the permission out again.

Not to sure bout leveling on this tho, maybe put a rank system in place and make it that you can only access certain weapons/vehicle above said levels.

I'd like to fully throw in my support for the following:

1. Mechwarrior/Battletech MMO

2. Shadowrun MMO

3. Crimson Skies MMO

 So basically FASA heh

Sadly enough they all had multiple video games based on them but they are all ripe and almost make more sense as MMOS.

Lots of good games listed. Some I didn't even know about. Will check them out.

I think Planescape would make an awesome MMO. A unique environment, a limitless expansion mechanism and endless story driven elements. All features that make for a great MMO.

In the Sci-Fi area I'd love to see Freespace as an MMO.

Also Half-Life would make for an interesting MMO.

So many of the suggested games are FPS games.  Most of those seem to die quickly in the MMO realm.  Maybe some of you should look at what works and what doesn't work before suggesting games.  Just because it makes a good FPS does not mean it will be a good MMO too.

True you can't just take a good single or multi player FPS and stick it online and have a winning MMO. However that has nothing to do with the visual perspective of the game. Its more a factor of failing to restructure the game to be successful as an MMO which is an entirely different genre.

My Top Picks Would Be

1) Elder Scrolls

2) Neverwinter Nights

3) Age of Empires

4) Vampire: The Masquerade

Elder Scrolls for me is one of the best rpg games ever made and while Neverwinter Nights share some similarities for me I prefer Elder Scrolls especially the latest one.  I'd like to see them further develop the vampire condition with in the game and even add warewolves to the games as well.  With that I would like to see more of true class syestem, but allowing a system to exsist that would still one to custiomize their class for the own needs.  I know I also mentioned Vampire: The Masquerade and that there is alredy a  game being made to a mmo, none the less I still see it worth mentioning.

I have many ideas that at least I think could work will in a rpg type mmo, yet this is neither the place or time to mentioning them but I may post on it at some point.

Nice article. As for none-video game based (except that it has been made into games before of course) I would really love to see a Dune Online. It's a very interesting universe and I think it could be translated into a great sci-fi MMORPG.

Two games you left out that I would love to see made into MMOs would have to be Civilizations and Age of Wonders: Shadow Magic. That is all.

Not likely. Bethesda (or was it the other company involved with Fallout?) has said they are only interested in single-player CRPGs.

Hah, in the old days when the Internet was open, I emailed Bethesda saying that they should make their next game an MMO, or at least cooperative multiplayer.  Daggerfall had the "push the mouse forward, your sword extends into a thrust, pull the mouse back and shove it forward, you execute an overhand slash" thing going, which sadly is gone today - you kids are just too uncoordinated to handle that kind of action :P

We were playing EQ1 at the time, and I really wanted that kind of FPS (First Person Swordplay) action in an MMO. Because this was teh old-skool Internet, the lead dev of Bethesda himself emailed me back. His message was "We think single-player games are where it's at, and that's what we're going to keep making" or words to that effect.

well, Bethesda is making money, but *cough* WoW, I wonder what the possibilities would have been if they'd taken the at-the-time premier single-player RPG franchise and gone MMO or even multiplayer with it?

Side note, there's actually a couple of guys who have gotten limited mulitplayer to work with Oblivion. Take that Mr. Dev! :P

The Elder Scrolls would be the king of all MMORPG's . I just hope i'll catch the day Bethesda will make this step.

I know that they are focused on single player..but they do make the BEST single player RPG's out there !

Everybody I know that played The Elder Scrolls feels the same. Multiplayer would be great, just to show off with your character :)

PVP, a dream ! Just imagine playing Oblivion with a couple of friends in a cold Ayleid ruin and taking on a dark very powerfull boss...a daedra mabe?...

But ...what do you say about multiplayer with Oblivion? Please fill me in.

Totally forgot about this - you can play Oblivion multiplayer on Xbox Live (coop mode too, so you can go questing with your friends). So, I guess when a player talks, it doesn't matter, but when Microsoft talks, you sit up and wag your tail, eh Bethesda?

However, multiplayer with PC Oblivion is barely functional, and not worth playing atm. Follow the links I put in and hope people stay engaged, Oblivion is fading away now. I think we may have to be satisfied with SWTOR for PC MMO story-based RPG play.
