Nominee Voting Opens

Today, we open the voting for the second annual MMORPG.com Reader's Choice Awards.

Awards By Dana Massey on November 20, 2006

Which game provided you the best time of killing others in 2006?

Amid a swirl of controversy, EVE Online was entered into a run-off and won the 2005 award for Favorite PvP Experience. Now, in 2006, we ask if it still stacks up or if a new experience has swooped in to take charge of this most hardcore of award categories. When voting in this category, please take in consideration the underlying mechanics, the ways the game encourages fun PvP, performance and obviously your own personal opinion.

Players vs. player combat is a game mechanic that encourages/allows players to fight other real players in an online MMORPG. Several new games are focused on this experience.

VOTING CLOSED
Check back soon for final brackets.

Last Year's Winner (2005 Reader's Choice Awards)

EVE Online, CCP Games

Fans of EVE Online's PvP were not going to let this slip by. We received a lot of email and board posts that suggested EVE Online be included in this category. The feedback caused us to open a run off between EVE, Dark Age of Camelot and Guild Wars for the crown. The final tally gave CCP's center-piece a solid victory.

Click on to the next page to vote on your Favorite Story of 2006.

For example, I did not have a favorite release in 2006, and i think i got around voting for one of the choices by going to the next page, but still, the option not to vote is needed.

Otherwise, I look forward to the results.

I thought of that, but on the other hand... they did win last year, so it seems only fair.

Fav new game of 06 - have to vote for Auto Assault, the only decente and somewhat original game of '06, even if it grows old quickly, i think they deserve my vote.

Graphics: EVE Online - it's dated as hell, but still it looks awesome. With Kali out soon™, all competition will be eliminated in this category.

PvE: Everquest 2 - it's a question of taste, but I personally haven't found any PvE that tops this. The amount and variety is superior. I had a hard time deciding between WoW and Everquest 2, but I think Everquest 2 is slightly better.

PvP: EVE Online - I completely suck at PvP in any form, so it's not one of the deciding factors to me, when I go out and buy a new MMO. That said, the PvP I found most heartpumping was that in EVE Online.

Story: Ryzom - By accident I chose Ryzom, but only because I didn't really know what else to vote. I don't care that much about lore.

Most Anticipated: Star Trek Online - I'm a huge ST nerd and can't wait for this game. I follow the progress closely and I really like what I've seen and read so far. I think we will finally see a movie franchise game that doesn't suck.

New Game: Guild Wars Nightfall - Well... I don't really like GW, but I can understand and appreciate why other people do. In my opinion, this is the only 2006 title that wasn't catastrophically bad.

Favorite Game: Everquest 2 - To be honest I haven't found the perfect substitute for DAoC. I played DAoC for 2 years straight in 2 different guilds, and left when my 2nd guild died for Everquest 2 followed by WoW. I got bored of WoW after hitting 60 and found myself trying out several other games (AO, Ryzom, EVE Online, DDO, Coh/CoV, RF Online, Horizons, Auto Assault, GW and SWG). I haven't found the substitute for DAoC yet, but I find that Everquest 2 is the game I keep coming back to. I hope STO will give me what I'm looking for.

Too bad there is no best musical score category.
Also a category for misstakes would be fun (like D&L:s billing problems, Horizons billing problems, Mourning taken off list due to Egomancer etc).

Not much happened in 2006 except for massive disappointments.

Well maybe not that important, I am just afraid of the flames :) I bet 100 to 1 that when this vote is done and eve has taken home several of the categories again there will be a flame thread where the trolls state eve didn't win fair and list the fact that it's listed as last years winner as one of the reasons.

Still remember the threads from last year where people claimed the only reason eve won was because there was so much downtime in eve when you could vote, while everyone else was too busy playing their great games to vote for them :)

  • Favorite Graphics: Still EVE for me, The atmosphere and grittyness of the game still takes it for me. I still love the effect of warping to a station located next to a planet, seeing the planet quickly grow from a little dot to a massive planet as you approach the station, the effect is very cool. Cool looking ships, amazing explosions and seeing swarms of missles streaming toward a target just gives a feeling of a epic conflict. The DX9 update will just make all this even better.
  • Favorite PvE: EQ2. Having 5000+ quests and an assload more variety in the quests it just kicks the crap out of WoW's lame PVE, took me 6 months to get sick of EQ2 PVE where WoW's took me only one.
  • Favorite PvP: EVE without question
  • Favorite Story: I couldn't decide on this one so I chose EVE, the player-made story is the real star of this game and the BoB/ASCN war has been a major story all year.
  • Most Anticipated: Age of Conan
  • Favorite New Game: Dungeon and Dragons Online cause it sucked less than all the rest.
  • Favorite Game: EVE

Fav PVP : Eve. 'nuff said.

Fav Story : I skipped this one. I coudn't think of an MMO that had a good story to it.

PVE - I had a problem with this. I like GW:Nighfalls pve but it's not the best. I didn't play many mmos this year so i couldn't compare them with GW.

PVP - GW.. this is the only game where 50% of my time in game I spend watching gvg.

Story - Again GW b/c it has storyline and GW:NF's story is quite interesting imo.

Most anticipated - Aion

Fave new game of 06 - Again GW oO

Fave Game - I guess you know which I chose.. GW. Since i play this game i can't find a  place in other mmos.. everything is so  slooooow.

Agreed. I was disappointed that the poll didn't include a non-committal or outright 'negative' option in the poll. While I didn't play all the new games in '06, I played a good many of them and none were particularly good. Some had nice features in one way or another but none were worthy of a vote. A not making a vote is not the same as a vote of 'There were no good games in this category this year.' Enough people voting an option like that might make some of the game companies add features or think harder in the future. (Probably not but we can always hope.) Also, what happened to the 'Worst of...' categories? There are several that fit there and voters might like to see numbers on those as well. Something of a catharsis for those who have been stung by poor games over the past year.

Eve is probably the only MMO where newbies stand a chance against older players. Eve isnt all about skills, its about teamwork, tactics and chance. Try it.

  • Favorite PvE: World of Warcraft since it is actually the biggest pve game that exists to me but then again it's quite limited >.<
  • Favorite PvP: Eve Online again since it's full pvp and the risk of losing everything is high in a battle
  • Favorite Story: The Saga of Ryzom since i loved the thing where you needed to discover the world to advance the story and now with ryzom ring it's quite nice for self-made stories :)
  • Most Anticipated: The Chronicles of Spellborn since i love the new features and the combination of everything but we'll c how it goes :)
  • Favorite New Game: Well the only game that left a nice impression was auto assault, it was something new, something refreshing, but not enough to make me pay for it
  • Favorite Game: Well i think i'll have to say EVE Online, the graphics are nice, the community is helpful and the developers listen to the players. also they're evolving the world constantly with new features.

False!

Revelations will include GFX updates. Every ship and object gets decent dx9c skin. It's not the well known vista gfx update, you might have mixed up with that.

In other words, revelations will introduce new gfx so eve gets new gfx still during 2006.

Guild Wars Factions and Guild Wars Nightfall are stand-alone games that happen to work together with the original Guild Wars Prophecies. Nice commercial.  I could care less what Guild Wars offers. Though I used GW as an example, my point isn't about that product specifically, but that MMORPG.com should refine their definition of a unique MMO property. It should include two points: 1) The MMO world not only is stand alone, but that it cannot interface with the other MMO worlds of that company. 2). The MMO world of the product is in fact a different virtual world than the other MMO products of the company, a difference represented by place or timeframe.

I want to be able to see what games people are enjoying. The ranking system helps with that. I would not have given Ryzom a second thought except for the Ranking it receives here on MMORPG.com. GW and other games threaten this exposure by exploiting a loop-hole in MMORPG.com's definition, no matter how unintentional that may be. The day GW, or any MMO for that matter,  places 5 or 6 MMOs in the top Rankings, pushing out other titles is the day I stop relying on MMORPG.com for my MMO news.

best Graphics:

Was a tough choice, but EVE got my vote by a narrow margin, for the age of the game the graphics blast away even most newcomers and the whole graphics engine is getting a serious upgrade soon.

Best PvE

Without a doubt. World of Warcraft. They managed to create something highly addictive for the masses.

Best PvP

Unchallegend. EVE Online. PvP means something here, your actions matter and leave a permanent mark on the game enviroment. you can actually conquer places and win or lose bigtime, instead of just grinding a map for pvp points until the next reset. Death can be costly.

Best Quests, Community, live event team and overall RP:

Dungeons & Dragons Online: Stormreach. A mediocre MMO in all , but if they have one strong point going for them it's this. On the part of quests, roleplay, story they leave all others i know well behind in the dust.

Best Newcomer:

No vote. didn't like any of them, 2006 was a meager year. None of the newbies could rival the already existing games.

Most Anticipated:

Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning. the sequal to Dark Age of Camelot, a Realm vs Realm pvp game in my favourite setting. already signed up for the beta months ago.

Best Overall MMO:

Again like last year, EVE Online. Grind xp, get better gear so you can grind for more xp so you can get even better gear until you finally hit the level cap and all you can do is stand there in your shiny armor and pick your nose. Thats the general pattern of the MMO games. EVE is different . Endgame is the game, it starts right after the tutorial and is never ending. you can play for years and still have things left to do, places left to go and worlds left to conquer. It's also unique in the time based offline skilltraining, you dont have to grind, you dont have to powergame 23/7 to become top brass.

Sorry, but I cannot help but ask based on the above post: why not pick DAoC then if you cannot find a game to replace it?

I experienced twice that all my friends left for other games (mainly WoW), and it was a strong demotivating factor for me. I did meet up with a few of them in WoW and we had great fun for a few months, but I simply got bored very quickly with the endgame content.

Believe me, I tried picking up DAoC again, but the european servers are pretty empty. It's just not the same game anymore. I left DAoC about 2 years ago, and even back then there weren't too many players online except for weekends.

I Just took a quick look at http://www.camelot-europe.de - only 45 players online on my server (Prydwen), and if you divide that in roughly 3 even groups, that's really not a lot for such a huge world. I don't know how the game is doing in the US, but here it's pretty much dead.

Otherwise, I look forward to the results.

maybe they are too busy enjoying the game? or maybe they don't need to because they know that the game they play has over 7.5 million subs? I don't know but those would be my conclusions.

I agree with your sentiment but there is no need to insult five star members. If they choose to play certain games it is a matter of individual choice (and thier lack of taste!)

By the way if you really are a dev make me a skills based fantasy mmo!

Also one could argue EVE is a care bear game compared with Project Entropia but I won't for the sake of argument.

You are SO right, yes, that MUST be it! It obviously can't be that I like to actually PLAY to advance my character, and neither does it have anything to do that I like games to be a little more fast paced, then EVE's extreme slow gameplay. No, it must be because I'm a noob.

Like to play to advance?  You mean HAVE to play to advance.  To become a better blacksmith you must kill 7885894 trolls, then raise the blacksmithing skill.  To compete with all the best gamers, you must grind as much or more than they do.  Most MMOs make it so you cant compete unless you have no life.  In EVE this does not exist.  You are rewarded for playing a lot by having more knowledge of the game and your local surroundings, as well as having increased OPPORTUNITY to make more in game money. (Some new players or players that dont have much in-game time who intelligently try out some interesting plan they devize are able to become very, very wealthy.  Other MMOs dont offer this potential to such an extent because they are relativly simple and limited.)  In EVE player knowledge = power.  In other games some knowledge is required, but most of what makes you strong is your equipment that is soulbound to you and the number of hours you spent killing rats, large bats,  zombies, lizardmen, and icegiants (in that order).

If you found EVEs gameplay to be slow it is because you were playing it wrong.  Join a corporation focused on small ship pvp and go out and have a blast pvping at top speed to your hearts content.  Or do the same with pve, or become a major market tycoon and youll find you need 4 arms to keep up with everything you need to do to stay ahead of your stiff competition.

Sorry, EVE is simply the best MMO out there and it looks like it will remain that way for a while.  Hate sci-fi?  Then I can understand why getting into EVE (at first) might take some time.  But you should know that EVE *is* the future of all MMORPGs.  EVE is a new breed.  EVE is alive and will live forever.  Other MMOs are all dead end junk.

When a Fantasy MMO comes out that matches EVE in perfection I might switch, but until then if you're not playing EVE, you're missing out.

Guild Wars Factions and Guild Wars Nightfall are stand-alone games that happen to work together with the original Guild Wars Prophecies. The fact that all the campaigns work together does not take away from the fact that they stand on their own as separate games.  One can own and enjoy any one, two, or all three, together or independently.  This, in my opinion, is an extraordinary accomplishment in the MMORPG field.  The Guild Wars games are incredibly accessible yet have a depth of story and tactical PvP that is unrivaled - so they all merit "consideration", as you put it.  The fact that Factions AND Nightfall were both produced in 2006 is only to NCSoft's credit.

If they were stand alone games, they would use seperate servers. What if I buy Nightfall, but I am forced to PvP with those with the Prophecies game? Being forced to PvP with others in another game just says one thing; that it really isn't a stand alone game. A stand alone game wouldn't depend on anything from the others, including the server or the community to PvP with.

Some people play MMORPG's to RP in and to overcome NPC challenges with a group of friends, not to compete. So stop assuming that every person who logs on this forum is a competitor in the MMORPG market. MMORPG's started off being virtual worlds and that is how many of us older people see them. A lot of us don't see them as a way to compete.

  • Best PvE: If Onyxia don't drop my Tier2 helmet I'll kill her a million times to get it! (aka WoW)
  • Best PvP: Went in to a war, got some ships turned in to scrap, and loved it. EVE wins my PvP vote.
  • Best story: WoW, have you seen the quests to open Ahn'Qiraj? That is a truly epic questline!
  • Most anticipated: Not applicable.

  • Favourite game: Eve Online. The best developers, best community, and have also made some very good friends... and enemies in EVE.

Nightfall did include a shader upgrade to it to DX9, and I shall bow eternally to it. Btw you really can't compare sci-fi graphics to fantasy graphics, so I guess personal favoritism falls into it.

GW PvP forever, never seen such a balanced game in history of all games, and with such competivity.

Nightfall's story is really good, well, at least it's better than Factions/Prophecies together, although one might say it's because they've actually linked them to a single source :)

I'll consider EVE when they do make the graphics update, although what might really conquer me will be the day they add decent physics to the game (as in my ship is almost destroyed, it deserves to look like it), we can actually walk by stations (as in currently I am glued to a chair while playing, and my avatar is glued to a capsule), and the game goes also about a decent planet exploration system. I like the economy (actually it's the best I've seen, really), the PvP (brings back the old school Ultima Online's die and you lose what you're carrying fear, but may also bring frustrations if you're unlucky enough to find some pirate that is years of skill development ahead of you) and the skill system (I don't really have to be in the mood of grinding to increase my level in this game, I can just leave it skill developing and play whenever I feel like playing) but that's not enough for me currently. I like everything GW offers and that's why I choose it as my favorite game in the awards I think it deserves.

It's stand alone as in, owning only one Chapter will only have actual access to contents of it.

It's stand alone as in, if you want to start playing GW, won't have to spend $150 for the 3 games at once, buy one, if you like it, buy the rest.

It's stand alone as in, these "expansions" have enough content for a whole new game. If it would be an expansion, GW would have the most complete expansions ever seen.

It's stand alone as in, if I were playing Magic the Gathering against someone, would I think it's unfair if that player has different cards than me, yet if the cards are very balanced? That's how the skills in GW work.

You and all people who think the same as you don't understand because you haven't even played GW, simply don't like it or didn't spend enough time in the game to taste the true competitivity and gameplay it offers. I may the like the game you do like and I'm not bashing it here, am I? And as GW has 2 stand alone Chapters released every year, I'm really happy that MMORPG.com understands the fact that they ARE stand alone, making it a single game on Ranking would be highly inacurrate and not putting GW for choice as best of the year would be unfair to the GW community.

I did the free 14 day trial and I didn't like it. The community was nice with the exception of you, judging by the post you recently posted stating all players of other games aside from EvE are noobs and carebears. I just didn't like not being a real person, I was just a ship. I like the economy system, the PvP ideas, but I hate the real time skill system. I like to be able to control the speed that I advance. I am a casual player too, so don't try to label me without a life. I am just happy gaining my first 12 levels in one week on WoW while RPing (which is extremely slow leveling).

To sum it up, EvE wasn't a bad game. But the lack of a ground game and the pace was just not my thing. If and when EvE implements planets that you can walk on, fight on, and live your whole life on, is when i will come back.

What in this makes it different from any other game with multiple expansions? Often you can buy the latest expansion without buying the earlier ones. If you do then you can not experience the content in those earlier expansions and you can not play the classes/races provided by them either but you end up playing against people who do have it.

Only difference I see is that when most other mmorpgs release a new expansion they start to include the earlier ones for free while in GW you have to pay for them all...

It doesn't have enough content to be one game. I have played GW and I have had it over a year now. There is not enough content for a single player game in it nor is there even remotely close for a MMORPG. GW is mainly an arena styled PvP game and it excells at that. That is why I voted for them as the PvP winner. No other game has had PvP that balanced before.

But that doesn't mean that they aren't all the same game, because any game that shares the same server is essentially the same game. Your analogy of Magic the Gathering only strengthens my point. Magic is a stand alone game. Players may have different cards, but all the card from both of their hands belong to the same game, not seperate stand alone games. So that analogy actually works better for me than for you.

Guild Wars as stated by their Devs themselves is a CORPG, not an MMORPG. The Guild Wars devs stated that themselves over a year ago when this argument first came about. But this isn't even about that, but keep that in mind when you read the next paragraph.

If MMORPG.COM were to place every GW expansion as a stand alone game, with the current rate of GW game releases and the fact that they are free, which is a significant reason why GW is ranked high to begin with; MMORPG.COM might as well rename this website to GuildWarsgames.com. I find it hard to believe that you actually believe that this is fair for the rating system. You are either a blind fanboi that just wants to see their game pasted all over the website or you are truly a dumb S.O.B...or you could just be a young ignorant kid, which more than likely you are since you play Guild Wars. Anyone who can put up with that much immaturity in a game must be one of them.

How is it cheating to ask people to vote? He is not even asking people to vote for eve, jsut vote.
Cheating would be creating several accounts and vote with all of them. Otherwise it's all fair. Just make a similar post on the forum of your favorite game. The more that vote the merrier I say.

Because I personally think this should be voted by mmorpg.com visitors, voted by people who visit mmorpg.com more then just once, and not just by EVE players who aren't intrested in mmorpg.com.

What you personally think is irrelevant. This is a public site, open to all whether they visit once a day, once a month or once a year. As long as they are MMO players their votes are valid. If you want to support your game then go to the games community and tell them to come vote. Everyone has the opportunity to do so.

Graphics: Ryzom

PvE: Ryzom

PvP: Lineage2.. only cause I couldn't test Ryzom one before though L2's pvp is broken due to the MASS Cheating Industry over there: legit pvp doesn't exist.

Story: Ryzom - So far so good.

Most Anticipated: Age of Conan - I saw the combat system, looks promising!

New Game: None

Favorite Game: Ryzom -

Ryzom is my best experience so far: I simply don't understand how I've missed this one for sooo long, well first year there was no pvp, so that must be it.. but after that.. dunno, bad promotion, bad critics..

To "Thedev.." who was saying that until he sees a phantasy game that offers him the same abilities than EVE's Sci-fi: give Ryzom a try. ;)

You can :
- Built your own unique toon: the same character creation than EVE - except that it's extented to the body (not only a customizable face) and that you will play/see your custom toon (unlike EVE)
- Built your own unique skills : every skills are made of "elemental functionnalities" (stanza) that you can change/ modify as you wish.. it's simply a genius.
- You level your skills by.. using them: like irl, the more you heal, the better healer you become, the more you craft, the better.. etc.
- You have no "class": you can level whatever of the 4 main professions you want: some try to level all .. some focus one one branch only.. but as the other part of the game, you are free to chose your path at any given time.

-  Mobs.. well can you speak of "mobs" when you have Herbivore that migrate depending of the day/night or the seasons, when you have carnivores that follow these herivores and hunt them down to feed upon - and eventually that feed upon you? Hehe, I'd rather speak of the Ryzom fauna and flora: their behaviour is amazing and you don't want to hunt them alone.

- The craft system is a pure genious: you mentionned that in EVE, the system makes it so that it rewards the most "intelligent".. the same is true here. Craft is based on a "general" blueprint that tells you the type of element you need: it's up to you to find the best combination of elements to find the most appropriate equip. The more combination you litterally try.. the better knowledge (irl, not in-game stat) you'll have -ie: a Craft Master is trully a master of his art, ppl actually keep their recipe "formula" to themselves, sharing it only with their friends.

- The Interface is very but very similar to what EVE show: you can set-up everything, from the font size to the density, from the mob's color code to the chat color code, lol. Just like eve, it's like "Russian puppets" : the more you "right click for info" in a window.. the more detailed info you'll get.

- PvP: you got here Neutral system (to avoid pvp everywhere except in the "full pvp" area), Guild vs Guild, Faction vs Faction, Open pvp. Outposts exists which are very similar in function and reward than the L2's castle siege (except you got more of them and they are daily siegable).

- You got a great community: very helpfull  - Awsome and remarkable GMs (CSR) who actually play the game, answer your questions (ingame) and enforce the game's rules. The shock with the absolute inexistence of them in L2 was terrible. The community by far looks like the one you find in EVE: simply great.

- Just like EVE, among the MMORPG, it has a strong graphical identity.. mobs and environments looks like nowhere else: a mix of phantasy and reality.

In a word, I've tried the game after OB -> C5 of Lineage2, tested wow quickly (I hate instance, I hate forced localized servers), played and enjoyed EVE (I stopped due to irl) and when I tried Ryzom's free trial (unlimited in time)... I bought a 3 month subscription 2 hours after!

The game is simply great and has a lot.. a lot to offer.

Why wouldn't you go to worldofwarcraft.com? There votes and opinions are just as valid as those coming from the EVE community, or the EQ2 community or the SWG:NGE community (all 5 of them). There are no MMORPG.com fans, only MMO fans who come here seeking information and the opinions of other MMO players.

A lot of MMO vets frequent this site, many of them are sick of WoW style gameplay and all that it brings. Many of them are UO vets and some have tried the game and while it wasn't for them, still thought it was a good game. That's why EVE's rating is what it is, not because an army of EVE players is constantly padding the scores. If that was the case EVE would likely have double the amount of ratings than WoW does, while in reality it has less.

The EVE community is the way it is for a reason, we're all in the same world together. It makes for a strong community, which is the core of ANY MMO.

I think the awards should go to the games based on quality, and not which game can attract the most biased fanbois, like the ratings are now.

What part of "Readers Choice" do you not get. Of course voters are going to be biased, they are voting for the games that THEY think are the best. If more people vote for WoW in those categories, then they have made thier choice. Whether we agree with thier choices is irrelevent. As for WoW fans voting unbiased, I think you would be surprised just how many of them would vote against WoW as I know a large number of players that are only playing WoW still while they wait for something better to come out.

What I mean to say is that I strongly believe that someone who comes here on a regular basis will be more subjective and unbiased on voting then someone who's only goal is to give its game as most awards as possible, Even when they know other games do better at certain points.

Also keep in mind that EVE is now the only community informed of the awards.

These are mmorpg.com's awards, leave it to the mmorpg.com community to give them away. thats my oppinion.

We obviously disagree, so lets just give it a rest.

Also, are all the spam accounts which are used to ramp up the ratings of games like EVE (not that it doesnt deserve its rating) going to be able to vote? If so, these awards mean about as much as the ratings on this site. I love this site but I hate people who make dummy accounts to vote their fave game to a falsely high rating.

Favorite game definitely EQ2 for me. The only one really worth playing.

...All those WoW-players who whined about them not winning because Eve guys rushed over... They should seriously consider why a 7.5million mmorpg has less voters than a 150k one.

Draw your conclusions yourself

I conclude that EVE will most likely be awarded Best Game, PvP, Graphics for two reasons.

a.) EVE harbours an extraordinary amount of forum whores who, if they are not already frequenting this site, will read CCP's "plz vote for us, plz" post and flock here to vote like ducks to a loaf of bread. When you create a game where people can surf the net while their skills train...this is what happens.

b.) I grew increasingly weary of the game and cancelled my 30+m sp PvP spec character a while ago, but nevertheless EVE actually does blow the vast majority of MMO's out of the water. This doesn't actually mean EVE is a great MMO...just that there is an awful lot of pure unadulterated crap in the MMO world. Anyhow, there are only a handful of MMO's that are in the same league as EVE currently, and these games do not fulfil the criteria stated in point a.

Moving on, the mainstream opinion of what is "good" is often ridiculously and horribly borked...and to be honest most people just use awards as a personal e-peen extension, to bolster blind faith in something, rather than using their brain and forming an objective opinion. To be blunt, you have to be a complete fool to take awards too seriously...remember we live in an era where Jessica Simpson wins people's choice awards.

That being said, I voted for Darkfall as most anticipated game because I am very eager to try it out and they are taking *fecking ages* making it.

While I am not saying that EVE's rating are the "victim" (not really a victim but)  of bot accounts, I do keep it in mind as a possibility. the fact that it has less ratings then WoW is not a guarentee no bot accounts are being used. If EVE is on top, no further bot account are needed, hence its not in the 10's of thousands.

I do have to say that its odd that this is the only site where EVE is ranked so high. all other ratings are dominated by WoW. but then again, this website has always been home to a lot of EVE players. I won't draw a conclussion, but your arguement is a bit flawed.

EVE: Exodus is rated at 89% on gamerankings.com, wow is at 91%, not a huge difference in ratings. If more sites were to re-review WoW in it's current form I'd bet money it would drop a few points too as the gameplay has been stale for 2 years.

Also by everyone's speculation, in order for EVE to keep the top rating players would have to be creating bot accounts all the time to add to the votes, hence there would be the 10's of thousands of ratings for EVE.

You would lose that bet, as WoW's gameplay didn't change. it was expanded, but didn't change. Every rating would still be the same. and while its not much, WoW still has higher review average, and much more players then EVE could ever dream of.

And, like I said before, it seems EVE doesn't need 10's of thousands ratings to stay on top, and as long as its on top, BOT's accounts are not needed. (IF the botting issue is the case here)

A game doesn't need 7 milion subscribers to be a success, CCP doesn't care about having the same subs as WoW. Frankly I doubt any other MMO ever will, including whatever Blizz makes after WoW. With that many subscribers it's just far too difficult to provide decent support to everyone. CCP counts many devs amongst it's customers and is well respected in the developement community. Hell they get applications from devs from other MMO's all the time.

As for the poster who said Revelations should be listed in the nominees. The category is for NEW mmo's coming out, not expansions, so Revelations does not belong in that category.

ok, i am sick and tired of people saying how this site is so off from reality and how EVE is not highly valued outside MMORPG. to begin with, i will say that the information i will give is non important for me. i value much more the ratings here than anywhere else, but seeing as some poster (specially gameloading) have trouble accepting ratings here...

from gamespot ------- EVE Online: Second Genesis here

review - 6.6, done on May 6, 2003

player review - 8.3 (OMG!!!! 8.3 its the same than somewhere i know...)

other publications review average - 7.4 -  25 reviews most of them from june-july 2003

some gems from the original review "The lack of clear-cut incentives, risks, and rewards leaves the world of EVE seeming empty", "There's a text-based tutorial that kicks off when you first begin playing", "Mining is the only viable way to make money early on in EVE, and it's really one of the only viable ways of making money in the game at all", "The game has some interesting features that aren't fully fleshed out yet, such as its player-driven economy"

as you can see, either those sentences are lies, or are completely outdated

from gamespot ------ EVE Online: Exodus here

no review from gamespot

player review - 9.1  oh noes, the conspiration is here!!!!

other publications review average - 8.9 -  7 reviews most of them from march 2005 (hey, but 8.3 on MMORPG is way too high!!!!, how can it be other sites give it a 8.9????)

and of course, after exodus, there has been another big expansion called Red Moon Rising, and on December will begin the next expansion, called Kali.

now, please, whenever you feel like bashing EVE, just say you dont like it, but dont make yourself look like an idiot saying that only MMORPG.com rates EVE so high

CCP have chose to bring in the expansion in 3-parts. The first while the vote is happening, the last well into the new year. Are they being punished by the choice of this policy?

A good category for next year might be best expansion/update, rather than calling them new games, as your "Most anticipated" seems to be.

And maybe best customer support, game patches, etc. That could be quite interesting as well.

Name me Three website's,Three, (although I'll be impressed if you can find 1), where EVE is rated number 1, above WoW, and while your at it, also try to find a website where EQ2, FFXI, CoH etc are all rated higher then WoW. If you bring in something to support your arguement, THEN MAKE SURE IT ACTUALLY SUPPORTS your arguement.

only decent game in 2006 was Auto Assault imo,
Eve is still probably the best all around mmo,
DAoC has the best PvP/RvR,
WoW has the best PvE even though it's just a mmo of Diablo 2,
Eve has the best graphics, but then things are a bit easier for them in some ways,
Age of Conan is easily the most anticipated game that will actually release in 2007.

This was amusing, good to see all of the votes, I can't wait to see the results. :)
Happy Thanksgiving to those that celebrate it.

Actually, EVE is rated higher than on MMORPG.com almost everywhere, with an average rating of 9.0 already, or so says gamespot, that takes into account the most important internet publications.

so, 9.0 everywhere, but 8.3 here. I guess this site isn't as biased as you and many others want to make it look.

on the other hand, WoW still has almost 3000 more reviews than EVE on this site. but i bet you will say that all those are EVE fanbois pushing it down. but, at the same time, WoW forums on this site got 5 times as many posts and topics as EVE forums. you probably will say again that those topics are made by EVE fanboys spamming and trolling the WoW forums.

You fail to mention Gamespot's ratings for WoW/CoX/GW/EQ2. You have to take into account the rating curve. Obviously not all websites use the same rating system, even if it's based off of the standard 10-point ratings.

I also laugh every time an EVE fanboy makes account #8589393 with names like "jfhshfkg" to artificially boost the ratings of "their" game. Don't even pretend the player-made ratings are anything close to fair. WoW players may be stupid and immature about certain things, but even they know better than to start crap like this.

furthermore, if 7.5 million player game gets beat by a 150k player game, so be it. don't whine and start pointing fingers. just because you have 7.5 million players it doesn't mean you have the right to every award you qualify for. in an analogy, it seems just a spoilt child crying and yelling for candy.

Hey moron, can I call you that? Ok good. As has been stated by MMORPG.com staff, those garbage name accounts have been created to get L2 trials. Also, if EVE players were creating these accounts to boost the rating of the game it would have 10's of thousands of ratings by now, yet it still has about 2000 less ratings than WoW.

But by all means, go ahead and continue to make yourself look like an idiot.

My votes (which admittedly may be a bit biased):

Graphics: EVE wins, no question.  No matter how many times I see the game, the graphics always look amazing.  WoW is also pretty good for graphics, but nowhere near good enough.

PvE: Anarchy Online.  Ignoring the Heckler camps of Shadowlands, I've always enjoyed going out and hunting in AO above anything else.  It's just so stupidly fun.  It seems like there is a fair amount of support for EQ2 in this category, but I've never played it, so I'm certainly not voting for it.

PvP: Guild Wars.  EVE is also quite good in this regard, but Guild Wars was designed for this purpose, and it shows.  Whether you are just playing a premade character or playing one of the large assortment of specialized builds, it's a fun, enjoyable experience.

Story: Anarchy Online.  Most people probably don't have a clue about the story behind this game, but it's there, and it's really, really neat.  I enjoy trying to piece together all the different events, as well as the overall experience of the game that is full of flavor.  Of course, it is very easy to ignore, but I'm still voting for it.

Most Anticipated: POTC Online.  I honestly didn't know what to choose for this category, so I decided to go for the game that sounded like it could make the most interesting product.  Pirates are awesome, and POTC Online might just be able to bring them into MMO spotlight.  Hopefully it works out well.

2006 Game: Guild Wars Factions/Nightfall.  Sure, they may be "expansion packs", but they are still better then the rest of the competition.  If it weren't for this, I probably would have said Auto Assault, because despite it getting old really fast, it is still fun for that first bit.

Best Overall: Anarchy Online.  I was either going to go for this or EVE, and in the end AO is just a tad better.  No MMO has ever drawn me in quite as much as AO has.  No matter how many times I restart, the game still is fun, with plenty of new places to explore, and lots of stuff to do.  With the free "classic" account offer, you have absolutely no excuse not to at least try this game.  It's completely worth it.

  • EvE , easily, no competition.

  • Favorite Story: The Saga of Ryzom pulled off an upset victory last year. Now, with the Ryzom Ring can they retain their crown as the favorite world/role-playing/backstory of any released MMORPG on our list?
--- Wait, what? They have story? What the heck? :P

  • Most Anticipated: Open to all games that have yet to launch, last year's winner Dungeons and Dragons Online has hit the market. Who will take home the crown this year?
  • Don't know really.
  • Favorite New Game: This category is from a list of games that launched to commercial service in 2006 and is the only new category in this year's awards.
  • Not a clue.

  • Favorite Game: Finally, from among those games on the market, what is your favorite MMORPG? Last year, the voters said EVE.

I find it amusing that some of the people on this site think that there's some massive conspiracy involving the EVE devs and players to artificially boost EVE's rating.  As I said last year, it's time to drag out your tinfoil hats, because "obviously" no one is safe from CCP.

Seriously, EVE players just play the damned game.  I have one and only one MMORPG.com login which I check sporadically from time to time.  I know of no one with multiple MMORPG.com accounts.

As for the actual vote, I voted for EVE in the categories where I felt it deserved the win.

For graphics, I voted EVE - dated as they are, the graphics are still stunning.

For PvP, it was no contest.

For story, I almost didn't vote because I don't know enough about the stories of the other games out there.  I know I'd rate EVE's backstory highly, but I'm not sure that I would call it the best.  However, it was then that I realized there's another aspect to story that's pretty much unique to EVE: the player-driven one.  In no other MMO do the players shape the universe as much, and it's all on one server to boot.  Taking this into account, I decided that EVE was truly deserving of this one, and cast my vote accordingly.

Despite my disagreements with a number of the things CCP are doing in Kali (and quite a few things I think they SHOULD be doing but are not), EVE still wins out for my overall MMO favorite game, so I voted accordingly in that category as well.

In all of the other categories save one, my lack of knowledge of other recent MMOs, combined with my certainty that EVE was definitely not the best in that category, I chose not to vote.

In the one other category I did vote in, I voted for Vanguard: SoH as my most anticipated game.  In Vanguard's case, I originally discovered it when I was browsing the websites of several of my favorite artists and discovered that Keith Parkinson had accepted a position as art director at Sigil Games.  Intrigued by the possibility that an MMO might have the same look as one of his paintings, looked into the game further and discovered that, in addition to graphics that look like true art, Vanguard's slightly different approach to a traditional fantasy MMO appealed to me.  Thus, I'm eagerly awaiting the chance to try it out.

Reader's Choice voting underway at MMORPG.com
MMORPG.com has announced that voting has begun for the 2006 Player's Choice Awards. Thanks for our enthusiastic and supportive community, EVE Online kicked some serious award buttocks last year, winning four out of seven possible categories. Can we do it again? You bet your Leviathan we can, but only if you cast your vote now!

If you can't see that is the same thing as asking to vote for EVE, then words can't even discribe how biased you are.

I'm neither attacking WoW, nor endorsing EVE, and I really don't want to become involved in this fight even though this will probably cause me too. I think you have made some good points and I think others have as well, and now its my turn.

Firstly, you are wrong by saying they are asking to vote for EVE, they stated they won some categories last year, and then said they thought they would win again. They then stated the only possible way for them to win is if people vote. Are you trying to say that if people don't vote for EVE, that makes it more fair?

Secondly, even if they were trying to get people to vote for the game they made and work hard on everyday, so what? If you made a game, and worked hard on it, and made money off of it, you would want people to express their opinions about it, especially when the opinions are good.

Thirdly, of course people are biased, saying they aren't is just stupid. You're asking people to vote for their favorite  game. The definition of bias (there were several I took the one relating to our discussion), taken from dictionary.com - a particular tendency or incliination, especially one that prevents unprejudiced consideration of a question; prejudice. Now when asking "what's your favorite?" you're asking for a biased opinion, and I think most people (WoW and EVE fanboys alike) will agree with me.

Lastly, to the orininal quotee, ravex5, you're probably right and if Blizzard made the same statement CCP did on their website, maybe more WoW people would vote and they would win. Too bad they don't.

P.S. Just to let anyone who might reply to this know, I'll probably forget about this by tomorrow so I might not post about this again.

so they got my vote in everything except PVP, still gave that to Legend of Ares just because a lot of areas are riddled with pvpers and you have no choice but to go by them to get to your training areas. So sometimes it seemed intense just trying to train :)

Wow, sad days when your favorite release game of the year was Silkroad
And that was because you played it for twice the time of most of the other listed games (30minutes or so)

Graphics : EVE (may not be top notch, but it creates the perfect atmosphere for the game, something alot of          games forget)

PvE : WoW (what can i say, i dont have a 60 yet)

PvP : EVE (only one that offers meaningful PvP IMHO)

Story : EVE (Great Chronicles, and everything is explained in character)

Anticipated : Age Of Conan (more meaningful PvP)

New : SWG ^D^D^D Silkroad (what a crap year it has been)

Best : EVE (how could i not after voting for the above list)

Fav New Game of 2006:  I voted for Guild Wars.  It can be debated whether or not this is an actual MMO, I'm sure.  But even if it ain't a MMO, it is STILL a better MMO than those other sad games that came out this year.

Fav Game - Everquest II

Not CCP. I did a post over there to say "hey nominee voting is open". I don't get why Eve fanbois were flamed last year, I mean... c'mon.

All those WoW-players who whined about them not winning because Eve guys rushed over... They should seriously consider why a 7.5million mmorpg has less voters than a 150k one.

Draw your conclusions yourself

maybe they are too busy enjoying the game? or maybe they don't need to because they know that the game they play has over 7.5 million subs? I don't know but those would be my conclusions.

Maybe they're mostly korean and don't hang out on an English site. :p

ok, i am sick and tired of people saying how this site is so off from reality and how EVE is not highly valued outside MMORPG. to begin with, i will say that the information i will give is non important for me. i value much more the ratings here than anywhere else, but seeing as some poster (specially gameloading) have trouble accepting ratings here...

from gamespot ------- EVE Online: Second Genesis here

review - 6.6, done on May 6, 2003

player review - 8.3 (OMG!!!!

At Gamespot, EVE gets a 9.0 while WoW gets a 9.2

At IGN, EVE gets a 8.9 while WoW gets a 9.1

At Gamerankings.com EVE gets an average 90% while WoW gets an average 92%.

While WoW is always just a tad higher than EVE, there's one thing to keep in mind.

At Gamerankings EVE's average is based on 8 Media Outlets.
WoW's average is based on 69 Media Outlets.

On Gamespot, EVE's ranking is out of 671 votes, while WoW's ranking is out of 31,596 votes.

It's a little tough to even compare the number of 'fanbois' that vote for WoW to the ones that vote for EVE.

I think it's a good thing that EVE is ranked first on one of the only websites that is visited by MMORPGers as opposed to fanbois of particular games.

The reason that mmorpg.com has EVE higher than WoW is because it's one of the only sites where the game is a common name.  On most sites people are like "'EVE'? what the hell is that?"

To say that the only reason that EVE is number one is because of 'fanbois' here is just like me saying that WoW is number one because of 'fanbois' on every other site considering the numbers of people that vote for the two games.

Ok correct me if I’m wrong but the categories are supposed to stand on their own merit.

For instance Graphics should go the game with the best graphics regardless of how much the game play sucks. It defiantly should not go to a game with mediocre graphics simply because enough of the fan base came and voted for it.  That’s the problem with poles like this, I loved Donkey Kong and if there was a DKMMO we could mobilize the DK community and get that lovable 2d sprite voted fav graphics. Heck I am surprised that my son has not mobilized his runequest buddies to come get it voted Fav Graphics, or wait maybe that’s because they are to busy playing to come post.

I voted and other than fav PVE nether WOW or EVE make my top 10 list in any of the categories.  Actually since the pole is fav PVP not BlobVrsP  I don’t see how anyone even considered EVE for that category.

Yes both are fun to play, actually I typically play WOW while I am playing EVE (both in windowed mode) but as far as the categories, there are lots of MMOs out there that better fit the individual categories.

My fav game of all time, the old Genesis vers of ShadowRUN, fav MMO is Shattered galaxy, what the heck since everyone else voted not for the best but for their faves here’s mine:

Fav Graphics: GW, just because of the Detail.

Fav PVE: WOW, again look at the details, Example there are 10 tiger families on the two continents and every one of them has a different skin, that’s detail.

Fav PVP:  Tribes, yes its dead, I played it for 5 years and in the time since I have yet to see anything that come close. Yes I play on WOWs battle grounds daily and I have fought in battles in EVE since 03. Heck the very first ship I lost was when I was chasing Tank and a fellow MOO, after a 3 system chase I had managed to get to a gate before them and had him locked down 3 more MOO jumped in to reinforce them but 8 more of us hunters also jumped in. That was a true firefight and I actually went through 2 cruisers and ended up chasing the surviving MOO in a punisher broadcasting their locations and movements.  Since BETA it was probably the best fight I have had in EVE  but it does not hold a candle to the PVP in other games I have played.

Fav Story: Actually MMOs do have stories, just not good ones but as far as that goes: Shattered Galaxy had the best.

Most Anticipated: I left this one blank because I have yet to see a MMORPG/MMO being released or even in development I am looking forward too. I had hopes for Shadowrun but they are not even close.  If you want me to look forward to a game then make one that’s a combination of  ShadoRUN, Battletech,Freelancer.

Fav New Game of 2006:  Were there MMO/MMORPG games released in 2006, I did not seem to notice any.  Now as far as just games, have you guys played new battlefield?

How many people play in the WOW BG?    16

How many people are in the average EVE fight.  6-10 vrs 1   (Ok I was in a 60+ fleet battle and was lagged until the time my pod hit the gate, you can not have more than a 20+20 figt in EVE and it still be playable to all)

I have been in larger functional BF2 fights than I have ever been in EVE, heck I have been larger CS matches than any WOW battleground.  So before you purests start crying that these games are not Massive keep in mind that when your talking battles they are actually between small groups.  Actually the Biggest fight I have been in was in RF online. That battle felt like (and reminded me) the Starwars movie battle. When you see 200+ people charging down a hill beside you and you look across and see 200+ come ver a hill to your right and 200+ charging at you from your left then you understand (and relize that leading the charge was probly not a good idea). Its just too bad that the rest of the RF gameplay sucked, the battles were great.

Yes I did, Tribes is one of my favourite games of all time, but it's still not a MMO. An MMO has to have persistance to be considered one.
An MMO has to have persistence to be considered one
Could you please explain this to me, seriously I have yet to have anyone actually outline what is required to call yourself an MMO. When I first started playing original Guildwars i posted somewhere that GW was one of the best MMOs to come out that year.  I was instantly flamed and told "Guild Wars is NOT an MMO" When I asked the Flamer what was required to qualify as a MMO he used AO as an example but added that you must act out your Avatar.  I asked "Wait, is that not a MMORPG? and if I talk in the half Scottish half Irish accent my Ranger speaks in am I not role playing, because from the neighbors comments the seem to think I am"

You say it has to have persistence, does that mean that a MMORPG/MMO that sucks and dyes in a year was not a MMORPG/MMO?

If you base a MMO on number of players then CS, BF2 and COD beats most MMOs on number of player’s especially if you only count the PVP instances.

So what are the criteria to be an MMO? EVE may have 16k players logged on but you will be hard pressed to find more than 20 people in any system and yes each system is an instance.(Except in Jita of course and those people are masacest, masicest, mass..  They love pain, they worship the god of lag and he sprinkles them with love over and over)

Til there is a vote choice equal to "none of the above",your just putting out more dishonest hype.

Persistance means that time keeps passing and things keep happening, whether you are logged in or not. As for having a hard time finding systems with more than 20 players in them, uh I was flying around empire last night and 75% of the systems I passed through had 20 or more players in them, not even including any of the hubs. Unless you are out in 0.0 all the time there are plenty of busy systems.

People have trouble thinking of guildwars as an MMO because the only persistant parts are the towns and everything else is heavily instanced. Even the towns are instanced to a degree but there is generally always at least 1 of each of them.

When something is non-persistant the moment you leave it is reset back to it's starting position. I.E GW missions, WoW instances (not counting raids) and anything similar.

Glad i could be of help in amuzing you ;) if only you had actualy  something to say ?

Cause i do not completly follow its story line does not mean i'm not involved in the story, it only means i'm not forced upon to only be able to play the storyline of a game, bit hard for you to grasp maybe.

Graphics should not only look good but also have to feel good, their are thousends of games that look really wonderfull and realistic ...but movements and such are terrible and unrealistic and since i had no catergory of gamemechanics i mix that with graphics

I have played many if not alott of other MMO's, beta'd many and yes their are some that have some things i like in a game but not as complete as i feel WOW is.

You also might need to lookup what the word narrowminded means as i am no such thing, i would be if i would force my opinion as to be the only opinion, so next time come up with some vallid points of argument
