E3 2006 Most Surprising: Fury, Auran

All we knew about Fury going into E3 was what their Public Relations firm had told us. The game was announced when their website became public just in advance of E3. The graphics were pretty and the description not so bad, but really, no one expects much from a company that has never before done an MMORPG.

Then we saw it. Carolyn Koh penned our E3 Preview based on what she saw. Besides jaw dropping graphics, the game is very much player vs. player centric, but in a way that might well be friendly to the average North American gamer. Obviously, the company has a global vision for their product, but as more and more companies try and design games for everyone, this is not uncommon.

On the show floor, Designer Adam Carpenter invited the entire staff to take part in a 4 on 4 PvP tournament. It is my biggest regret from the show that we simply did not have the time all truck down there and see what would have happened. Nonetheless, consider it a date for next year.

None of this even touches on the graphics, which are definitely in the mix for Best Graphics. Do they win? Read on to find out, but I must say, that was definitely the hardest category to select this year.

This category wasn't even close. If any game came out of left field to grab us, it was Auran's Fury. They're off to a good start.

The following eligible game did not win the category, but does deserve a nod for their efforts at E3 2006.

AION, NCSoft

Going into E3, all we knew was that NCSoft had a game called Aion. What we saw was visually stunning and full of potential. It's a bit early to tell how it will turn out, but this was definitely a good start. Yet, with NCSoft behind it, how big of a surprise can it actually be?
