Bottom line... We don't have access to the exit surveys. So the vocal few that play the game currently could be far outnumbered by those who tried the game and quit because they wanted a more traditional mage.
It does bend the lore a good bit but I understand the reasoning. Turbine needs to treat LotRO as a game first and as the "lore holy ground" second if you ask me, although a very close second. Apparently this has all been approved by the powers that be and it's going into the game. Hopefully it does what they want and it pulls in more subscribers. The legendary system and the fact that we get to explore Moria is all I need to play.
It seems pretty clear. They are breaking IP if you want to treat the original works as the Bible, which many do. But it's already gotten approval of the people licensing the game to Turbine, which isn't Tolkein Enterprises btw, so it really doesn't matter. In fact, I can almost tell you exactly how it went down.
Saul Zantz (sp?) says to Turbine "Hey, this game got amazing reviews by all the sites but it's not doing as well as we would think given the reviews."
Turbine - "Well, as it turns out, there's fewer Lore nuts out there that are hardcore, long-term gamers. If we really want to bring people in we need to be a bit more flexible with the rules in order to attract long time WoW players."
SZ - "Can you do it without wadding up the lore and throwing it in the fire?"
Turbine - "I think we could do that although the really hardcore lore junkies are going to be extremely upset."
SZ - "Will we make more money?"
Turbine - "Probably"
SZ - "Then go for it"
And that's how we got a magic using class. Personally I'm happy about it, I'm playing a game that's an interpretation of the original works. I enjoyed the movie for what it is as well, even though there were many things wrong with it. Turbine earned their creative license at this point. I can assure you that the magic users will feel more Middle Earth-y than any caster in any other MMO.

thanks for the reply btw. My only real complaint with FF is the wait for a group. As for LOTR the only other question is what this game will be after warhammer comes out. I know they might be two totally different games...
LotRO's audiance is quite a bit different from WAR and AoC. PvP centric games are probably not going to put a huge dent in LotRO's subscribers.
Sounds like someone over at Mythic played AC2. It's funny to me that one of the big reasons people didn't like AC2 later in life was because of the number of classes. For those that don't know, each of the 3 races (eventually 4 and a drudge) had unique classes. Each race had 2 melee classes, 2 ranged, 2 caster. There were overlaps between classes but each and every class was unique. It was the best system out there and would be today if it hadn't been screwed over by MS. Oh well... another topic.
I'm glad another company thought that was a good idea, gives me some hope for WAR.
I'll play it if it's a good RTS, I won't if it's not. A bunch of pre-rendered CGI doesn't tell me much.
How do you feel about advertising inside games?
