Players that only look at graphics and then say ' Meh this is a <insert ip> clone' are not to be taken seriously.
Originally posted by phatpeteyActually no, I dont like WoW for different reasons. Main reason is that it doesnt have a mentoring system like EQ2/CoH. High max lvl without mentoring system, means I cannot play with my friends most of the time. Although I liked EQ2 at start because it has nice solutions to things that I normally hate in gearbased MMO's, I eventually got bored with having to replace my armor every tier.
What people like so much about Guildwars imo is the fact you don't have to pay for it. Many players would choose WoW instead of GW if they were willing to pay for it but to me it seems that GW is the F2p version of WoW for many gamers. I personnaly love GW, because there is absolutly no grinding in game and that is something really great. The gw-community rocks aswell. Many nice players who are always willing to help you. So that why GW became so popular.
I guess I just dont like gearbased MMO's.
GW simply has a low max lvl and lets you play endgame most of the time. Different areas need different solutions (skillsets) and mobs behave like teams. It is more about tactics then plain gear. This is a different approach then in EQ2/WoW kind of games.
This will be a very familiar system for Guild Wars players. They are already used to creating their skilldecks for different situations. The rotating bar will only be a minor adjustment. Im looking forward to this combatsystem.
SWG is fun if you are fan of Star Wars or a roleplayer. For roleplaying it is great to have playercities, storyteller system, beast master and the entertainerprofession. I can really understand if players like SWG because of this.
However, professions are very simple compared to other MMO's. PVE gameplay (instance entrances, line of sight, collision detection, stuck mobs etc) is way to bugged for a MMO of this age. I am talking about basic gameplay here, that is still not working as intended.
Beast Master and the crafting professions are good concepts. The downside is that lvling a pet is a grind comparable with the typical 'Korean grindfest' with the difference that you cant buy xp potions :p As solution, SOE now lets people use AFK macro's to lvl their pet! As long as they are not doing that in questlocations or causing massive lag.
Crafting is partly broken (experiment lines without use, colourschemes that are bugged, complete useless branch of Munitions profession: weapons)
Ive played this game for about 6 months and then got sick of the developers only adding new content for max lvl's and doing nothing about the years old gameplay bugs.
Then you have laggy PVP with the crapload of buffs that you need. Combine that with the simple professions, no strategic objectives and you get static wait and gank pvp. Total disappointment for anyone who is used to quality PVP (DAoC pvpers, GW pvpers be warned).
Space is fun though imo. But not enough for most players to be the single reason to stay in this game.
Although I have my best memories from the original game (Prophecies), I would definately recommend Nightfall for a new player. Nightfall feels like Prophecies, but then greatly improved.
If you want to play PVE hardcore, get Nightfall and Eye of the North and try to finish those in hard mode. This wont be easy for a new GW player.
For PVP you could do without Factions and Prophecies, but if you want to be competitive in Guild vs Guild or Heroes Ascent, your teammates will expect you to have all skills available. Even though you can only bring 8 at once. And expect having to practice a lot! No ubergear in this pvp.
Professions in GW are not as static as in gearbased MMO's, so you will have to learn to recognise loads of skills and play in a lot of different ways.
