If youre into scifi, theres a higher chance youll stay on to get through the learning process. But if you don't usually watch or read scifi and you just dont feel inspired by scifi then I'd say play another game. Its not really worth the time and effort if you dont like the general theme.
That being said, I actually reccommend starting with an adventurer. I know MA is easiest to play because you dont need weapons, but really, theres alot of guides on the net which can help you with skill point distribution for your weapon of choice. I personally just hate the idea (and experience) of slugging away at monsters with bare fists and half-hearted low kicks. I'd much rather slash away with a 1 handed blade or shoot at things with my pistol.
EDIT: ah forgot, not to mention, adventurer's pretty well rounded in various areas - hes the jack of all trades. You can buff for a time with him, you have fair heals, and he does well both in groups and solo.
I hate second life because it doesn't give me the escapism I want. If I wanted to check out girls in short skirts or signs saying "Obama 08" I can do that by taking a walk down the street.
What an 85% score means to me - its worth trying out. They have a list of pros and cons which help give an overview of the game. Theres alot of hostility in this forum between people who think this is a fair judgement and those who think its a deliberately inflated score. Imo, thats fine - as long as you've played the game, given it a fair chance - then you reserve the right to say whether its really worth 85 or not. I believe thats what the majority of people here is saying - that they don't buy reviews from magazines and websites but would rather trust personal judgement. But for those who havent played, aside from a demo, reading these reviews is the next best thing to getting a feel for what its like. So all collusion and conspiracy theories aside, why not simply read more than one review? Read scathing ones, read worshipping ones and afterwards youll get a more balanced perspective.
In general, I do like Gamespot; I think the site is well laid out and easy to follow and of course, I don't just take them by their word and go like, "this game got a perfect 10" then it must be the best game ever." I don't think anyone really does this. Most people see that and go, "thats worth a try." Another way I think gamespot is helpful is cuz they do list out game features, along with pros and cons, and I've been well served by that in the past - steering clear of highly rated games which have features I dislike. Finally, i think another big reason these reviews are useful is simply that most people don't have the time to spend actually trying different games out, weighing them, finding the correct one. Nah, people have work, school, whatever and its alot easier to choose from the ones that are highly rated.
I do understand why theres so much conjecture about AoC tho. It was highly publicized in the gaming world before its release - and its jumpstarted off to success already by using a character immortalized in the annals of fantasy - Conan the Cimmerian. Thats another factor why people like this game. Personally, having been a REH fan for awhile now, I wouldn't mind if the game was only mediocre. For many, this is a chance to actively take part in and explore Hyborea. There comes a point when reading doesn't satisfy anymore and you'd rather try your own hand at decapitation and rescuing half-clothed slave girls.
