A total disgrace of an article !!! MMORPG.COM proves they are taking direct bribes from gaming developers instead of bringing out the TRUE issues of a new releaased MMORPG game.
Anatomy of a launch ? How about talking about the PR job that promised alot of features that then are not in the game ? How about talking about the total preventions of allowing testers to tell gamers about the true state of the game ? How about pointing out that he "succsess" of launch is NOT based on the product - not based on the content and not based on the features. Its based on something totally diffrent. And MMORPG.COM finds that perfectly fine ?
What kinda MMORPG gaming site is this ?
Fool as many to spend their money ? Is that what gaming is about ? Is that good for the MMO gamers? Or is that good for MMORPG.Com vallet ? Not to mention the gaming developers ?
What?
This article (Part 1 of X) outlines some of the problems with the game, more than anything else. I for one am having a pretty good experience with AoC but am frustrated that some of my colleagues are having problems. Will I leave the game if my guild decides to move on due to problems? I will. But in the mean time, I try to enjoy the game for what it is and have faith that Funcom will deliver on its promises.
Should Funcome have been better prepared? Yes.
Should they have a better PR/CS department? Yes.
Are they paying MMORPG.com to write a flashy embellishing article? Are you nuts? ![]()
Are they trying to fool people to spend their money? I ask you who is the more foolish; the one who fools or the one who gets fooled? Get informed, get educated and make an informed purchase. Don't blame publicity and hype (called promotion for you non-business types) for making a game attractive. That is the whole point of going in business....to make money.
I personally can't wait for the next part(s) of this article, as I have been in the dark about some of the other issues I don't know about. I haven't looked around for problems that I don't have and count myself lucky. I do hope that people who left do decide to come back when the game actually goes through its polish.
P.S.: I agree with LOTRO being my smoothest launch evar!

Either that, or they're not really MMOs.I think we all know that people, most likely the greater (overwhelming) majority of the MMORPGing public, would go with the latter thanks to WoW. I, myself, personally DO associate the loading screens with single-player games because that is where I have most often encountered them as opposed to where in WoW as an MMORPG I enjoyed seamlessness.
I do so enjoy and miss the seamlessness that is WoW with very few load screens (log on and zoning). However, I do now enjoy the time I have to rub the sweat off my palms during the loading screen. ![]()

Exactly what I keep saying to people who claim the social structure of the game is ruined by the bad chat system. Its identical to the chat system in all the MMO's you mentioned lol.
And to reply to ZORNDORF:
Chatting doesn't exist on consoles? I scoff at your remark.../scoff.../scoff.../scoff
And loading screens? I guess I played LOTRO, DDO, VG, EQ, GW, (continue ad nauseum) on consoles. Either that, or they're not really MMOs.
Originally posted by GazenthiaNo...I did not think you thought that. I stated my opinion that consoles, at launch, are better than most PCs that people own. And I just wanted to add my flavor to your point, which I agreed with.
Just in case you thought otherwise: I don't believe consoles are ever any better than PCs. I was just pointing out that AoC doesn't actually require bleeding edge rigs to perform well, and the latest gen of consoles may meet the minimum requirement.
The last console I ever bought or played on was the PS2, the year that it launched :/

yeah, they made a console game only to realse it on the PC a year before they release on the actual console, makes a whole lot of sense
this is a PC game that's going to be on a console, not a console game that is going to be on a pc.
IMO, I think they thought of both from concept and not a decision that was made afterwards. This game was designed with both platforms in mind. And come on....the XBox is just a PC in a fancy plastic case. We are talking about Microsoft.
I own a Wii and a PS3. Some games are just better on PCs, some on consoles and some really makes no difference. Hell, some games are better on the Wii then they would be on PS3.
It doesn't make a lick of difference if AoC was designed from the ground up to be XPlatform. If the content sucks, that's what will make a poor game. If things are packaged well together, the game will be good as well. If it has mass appeal, then the chances of it succeeding are better. To say (like the OP) that you can't make a game with an interesting story, good fun, good graphics and good performance because the console is a lesser platform is just plain ludicrous. Let's look at the success of GTA4.
For the record, my preferred poison is the PC game. I got consoles so that I can gather with friends and play some group games and have beer and play the drums and guitar and think I'm a rock star!
On my PC, I prefer to shoot, slice and maim the whole lot of you (or die trying, which is what usually happens). Then the wife calls me and I go AFK.

Well, there's one thing that really puzzles me then...If there are so many people still having a hard time playing AoC because it requires a mid to top notch rig to run it, how the hell can a console handle it when the specs should not even be THAT close to a computer. I mean today's console games have terrific graphics, but in the end it will never be better than a computer.
I don't think it really requires much to run well. I think people are/were exaggerating that bit. I run AoC much better than LotRo. However I understand that there are certain pieces of hardware, drivers, etc that clash with the game.
Well, no...in the end the console will never be better than a computer. In the beginning of its life, though, it will be better than most. The reason why a console would run it better than a PC with equivalent hardware is because of all the other unnecessary applications and services running in the background, coupled with more peripherals, etc.
Also, to support Gazenthia's point that there are too many factors that will affect the way a game runs, LotRO runs better than AoC in my case. Is his rig better than mine? Who knows, but he runs a newer game better than an older game. Wouldn't you think it would be the other way around as well? Basically, way more factors affect a PCs performance.
