Latest Blog Entry - World of Warcraft: A Review
From my blog King lucius of ETRURia [luciusETRUR]

World of Warcraft has been living and thriving for almost four years. It is surprising that the game is still thriving and as people thought 8 million was its peak, it then reached 10 million. I am not here to say that WoW is going to die anytime soon, because that is very doubtful, nor am I going to say it's an awful game, because I played it for three years. I am just going to say what I think is right and wrong with it, as I have much dislike and distaste towards the game now.

When I think of first playing WoW, I think of glory of leveling my first couple characters. The joy was immense, and the world lush and fun. Even when I was level 60, it seemed so exciting, because there was a new tier of armor every other month and you could take epics with blues. This is what made WoW so great, you did not need to epics to have a chance in PvP as long as you understood your class and the game. It was as they had states, a hardcore and casual game.

The plus side to WoW, is it has rich, RICH content. There is so much to do, and so much to accomplish. However, I am a PvE and PvP oriented person, but moreso in PvP. You would think Arena was a great thing for PvP, but this is horribly wrong. Arena transformed the game into an constant desire for top tier epics, because if you didn't have thme you were at a disadvantage. To get them you need to be on top Arena teams or in raiding guilds, for the most part eliminating the 5-man casual entity that WoW had stood for.

Arena: Arena brought about a organized and competitive battleground for PvPers. However, what it didn't do was fix PvP, fix the imbalances and problems that are in WoW. BGs are ok with imbalances, because it's not that important, but with Arena, with world tournaments and Arena ratings placed on gear, which was the primary reason to get rid of the old system, it made the imbalances ruin the fun of the game. At least for me.

Warlocks, Frost Mages, Disc Priests, Restoration Druids, Hunters have all their great attributes and the fact that are extensively more powerful than everyone and that MS Warriors are the most important melee class in the game. You see, blizzard wanted to bring diversity to their classes, or so they said, and they fixed nothing but making Druids the best class in the game.

What broke me, what sent me away from WoW, was when Drysc reported that Shadow Priests would not be fixed until the expansion. I did play one, but it didn't matter what I was, they knew something was wrong, there had been something wrong since the release of the Burning Crusade, and they have no problem buffing druids and saying warlocks are fine due to the usuage of Warlocks in arena teams (even though according to their numbers Druids were way over numerous than they had intended and showed the statistic but still did nothing). With 10 million subscribers they have no incentive to fix this game, until another MMO starts swiping members from Blizzard. Even if this happens, I'm not sure I will even consider coming back.

It's more likely to keel over and die of old age than another game.

It's because WoW is a simplistic, cartoony and lame excuse for an MMO and most hardcore gamers are offended by the fact that it has somehow became so popular. I for one am sick and tired of hearing how many subs WoW has and how many people play it, because I'm worried that other game developers will be looking at this as the 'new standard' in MMO's and flooding the market with cheesy knock offs. *Cough WAR Cough* I'm glad Funcom has gone their own direction and revolutionized the genre. It may have a few things in common with WoW, but no more than WoW has with every MMO that came before it. AoC is the best MMO to come out since Dark Age of Camelot, and I'm disappointed that Mythic has gone the way they have with WAR.

Blizzard has taken many aspects from Warhammer universe and applied them to Warcraft. I really don't see a problem with what Mythic is doing, and to say the "cartoony-fell" bugs you, that is a problem imho. Good games don't need to have blood and gore, they also don't need to look like Age of Conan does. If it's a good game, why let cartoony characters turn you off? You are just ruining the fun.

Don't get me wrong, I'm done with Warcraft for now, and I am playing Conan, but I couldn't care less about if the game looks "mature" or cartoony.

Right now it is spawn rape. And if you get away from the spawn area they will always find you.

Level 10 atm, mixed emotions for me

If you are level 10, you should be able to continue in the nighttime in Tortage questline. I've had very few problems being ganked and I'm playing on Deathwhisper. I've only had to level 9 -10 and 13-15 so far during the day, since reaching the city of Tortage.

      Age of Conan
    • Felt like a button masher until level 10
    • I have not played but sounds like almost every game. The first few levels do not indicate whatsoever what the game is like. However, it's good to hear it is not. Last MMO I heard was supposed to be a great PvP experience was Fury, and all you did was spam keys, which is not genuine PvP.

      Thanks for the insight, however.

      Age of Conan
    • Best PVP in a MMO
    • The reason you can "loot" items in FPS games is because it takes the next round or spawn to get those items back. In an MMO where you spend hours and hours, leveling and getting gear. How is it carebear not to want to lose them? How does this encourage competitive play?

A carebear is someone who fears competitive play in every regard, not simply because you dont want to lose your gear so that you CAN play. In all RPGs, your character is useless without items, so this is an awful arguement.

Part of being good is being balanced. Guild Wars has diversity and balance, as overpowered builds do not tarry long as overpowered builds. Guild Wars, if you find enough competent people to GvG/HA with, is probably the most fun PvP, imho.
