Don't get me wrong, I enjoy a certain amount of metagame BS.  But this whole wheel thing is just too forced and seems very distracting.  I don't think I want to decipher a new set of icons every time I execute a skill.

For a quick read-up on skill and combat system: tcos.com/en/gameworld/?id=skillsystem

Basically you decide yourself on how and where you want to place your skills in the skill deck, so no metagame at all. It is the same as if you have 6 skill bars from which you can sequentially use one skill. The tactical part will be where to place your skills beforehand in such a way that they will be usefull, like the example given of combo finishers. Now if you're unable to keep track of 6x5 skills, then there may be another issue...

Well since you got the "Preorder" when preorders aren't even authorized at this point I would be glad you got it early.

This is actually quite funny. Shows how clueless the gaming industry is when it comes to releasing products in a professional manner. Customers getting "secret" codes that aren't suppose to be released yet without even trying.

It has nothing to do with the gaming industry, it is the retail side that is not keeping their side of the bargain. When you plan to announce a pre-order which will have something additional (like in this case game codes), you need to ship that material to the distributors/retailers beforehand. In practically all cases this comes with an agreement not hand out the material before the agreed upon date. I know that in Europe, retailers can be (and have been) sued for having broken that agreement in case of product releases. But as a pre-order is technically not a product release I'm not sure how that is handled. How this is handled in the US, I have no clue either. But it seems that large US retailers like Gamestop, simply do not care about their agreements, as long as they can get their money as quickly as possible...

The one mistake you could argue that EA/Mythic made, is to plan ahead. What they should have done is to officially announce the CE/pre-orders/etc with extra game codes next week, and then tell the people that it will be made available at their local store a month later. This is the only way that no half-assed retailer will try to get ahead at the cost of everyone else. And if these kind of practices continue, it may well go that way for future releases. At the cost of us gamers of course...

      WAR (Warhammer Online)
    • WAR or AoC
    • Personally I would say that of those two, WAR will better suit you. AoC will be extremely guild orientated. But maybe not the game you were asking for, but it also does fit the bill of everything you ask for: The Chronicles of Spellborn. Have a look at their homepage: www.tcos.com

For a demonstration on the look, feel and how combat works see: New TCoS Beta Video, The Starting Area (linked on their front page).

      WAR (Warhammer Online)
    • HELP, I must suck and need help
    • In regards to the auction house, I can recommend www.burningsea.com/forums/showthread.php   Also, take an hour or so and read through all the other stickies in that one and the other forum sections, that will realy help you a lot. You will get more smelling salts with the first few starter missions in your starter town. No need to buy them yet.

On your question regarding the mission, my guess it it was the 'Man of Wealth and Taste' mission? You shouldn't be doing that one as your first mission. There are at least a few other tutorial mission that will explain a lot of things. One of the missions will tell you how to properly attack and then board a ship. Just look for the people with the green ! signs and sort the missions in your log by level, do the lowest ones first. Also, and I cannot stress this enough as I made the mistake myself, read all of the text of the mission and explanations. The auctioneer for example has quite a nice explanation on how the AH works, the town crier will explain a lot of other things, etc...

It must be admitted that this game is not the easiest to get into. I did what I normally always do when starting a new MMO. Create a first character and just do all sorts of things and probably mess it up. After reaching a certain level (level 10 or so) I just delete that character and start all over, but this time I know where I messed up and what I should have done.
