    • Why such a push for realism rather than artistic?

And I don't mean that they should be unrealistic and crazy abstract... I mean they should develop a form in their game that can easily cause a player to fall into thinking that it IS real, even though it doesn't really resemble the real world all too much.

WoW did it. Most of the people who log into WoW don't look at a tree and think "Gee, that pine tree looks fake... it doens't look anything like the pine tree outside my window!" because the world has a form that just works in a way that the player accepts it as its own reality. When most people see a tree in WoW, they just process "There's a tree. Gotta move around it. Maybe someone behind it's about to gank me." because they have accepted that the tree is "real".

      Ya know what I mean?

    • This is why we love to play MMOs...or at least one reason
    • I certainly know what you are talking about, OP.

I disagree, though, that a movie or even a picture doesn't (at least sometimes) actually put you in the world like an MMO can (and I say can because it seems harder and harder to find one that does, at least for me). For example, in the LOTR:FOTR, the scene with the bridge of Khazad-Dum sucks me right in every time I see it. Especially the first time though... I'm pretty sure I was sitting in the theatre staring into the furnace that was the balrog's maw with my chin on the floor and my eyes wide with a mix of awe and terror. I wasn't just wishing I was there, let alone watching something happen to someone else... that fiend was about to crisp me :)

I don't think there is one out there.

No grinding is the biggest hold up here. Every MMO I have experience with, and I have experience with a bunch of them, involves grinding. Now I know that you might be able to say that "grinding is in the eye of the beholder" or something... but honestly, folks.

When you combine the no grind requirement, which is steep enough in and of itself, with the "relies more on skill than gear" requirement, I'm even more inclined to believe that no such game exists.

Give a high rating (i.e. a large number) for a game with good performance and/or a low latency.
