WAR doesn't interest me very much because I found DAOC and its RvR(tm) system to be rather boring and when I played, practically non-existant.
I don't usually bad mouth games I don't plan on playing, but a quote in there struck a chord in me in regards to games that focus so much on PvP:
Jeff told us that his wife, who plays the game, really enjoys tipping oil onto the attacking men. "She giggles with glee," he said.
That SOUNDS great!
Except...
What if you're the attacking men? Is it fun to have boiling oil poured upon you? In PvP, what one person can do to another, they can do right back. So while the act of pouring boiling oil on someone may be great fun, is the act of having boiling oil poured upon you also fun? Somehow, I doubt it. That's always the problem with MMORPG PvP. While some might enjoy having boiling oil poured upon them, they are few and far between. So, who then do we get to man said battering rams? NPC's? So now we've gone from PvP to PvE again....
And the circle is now complete and the student has become the master as we meet for the first time for the last time.... to borrow a spaceballs quote.

Speaking as a missionrunner i must say it has well the potential to bring me into pvp.
Was doing pvp quite a while ago for 2 months, but from my point of view it had no purpose, so i gave it up. Grab 20 guys and go roaming for few hours till you find find an enemy gang that is willing to engage and not dock. And when you finally met one, your coward FC tells to warp to a savespot and avoid combat, since they have few ships more. Or you wait 2 hours at a gate to "protect" the entrance to your ally's space, 2 hours nothing happens. Then there are reports that a fleet 3 times larger that the gatecamp is coming in and again FC decides to give up the camp. Or you finally catch a smaller gang and kill them, but can't feel realy good about it, as it wasn't a fair fight / their intel sucked up. Maybe it's just me but i need some sort of motivation to kill someone, don't like kill people randomly like a pirate.
And this is what factional warfare might provide, a solid background story, a motivation to do pvp to protect your empire (and not some dumb decisions of your alliance ceo). You don't have to give up your freedom, making your ceo planning your eve time, it's more for the casual player i guess, unlike alliance warfare.
I stockpiled billions for this event, it was announced years ago and was delayed many times so i don't know if it won't be delayed again, but if it will come this year and will be about that what i think it will be, i (as a missionrunner who didn't do that much pvp yet) will for sure participate and throw hundreds of battelships into it .
Eve's PVP is a sad parody of a real "war".

Wonder why its released 3 days later in Europe. Funcom is even based in Europe.
It releases 3 days later in EU because that's when the distributors "release" games in the EU. On Fridays.
In NA, we release new stuff on Tuesdays.
Similarly, the music industry might release stuff on Wednesdays in the NA, and Fridays again in the EU, etc. It comes down to choice of the distributors.
Almost all heals in the game are "Heals over time" and area based so you don't have to worry about micromanaging health bars (So I'm told anyways, I'm not in the beta).
Bear Shaman: Likes to melee with big 2 handed weapons (I believe). The more he melee's the better his heals become.

Priest of Mitra: The most "healing" oriented version, the more he heals, the better his damage (spell) output becomes. He also has several ways of "Crowd control" as well, more than the other 2 healers I believe.

Tempest of Set: This is the druid, stormcaller, and Scion of Set all mushed together as one. Sorta the reverse of the Priest of Mitra, the more spell damage this one does, the better the healing becomes. One of the best "AE" damage classes in the game apparently.

I cant quote about half a dozen game mechanics from AoC that might not generally be new or innovative, but have essentially been copied by other games due out.
The game director said on Norweigan TV that beta will be by invite only (open beta) and that it might start around May 1st and run for 2 weeks or so. There might be a special beta weekend before this though coming up soon.
what does the open in open beta mean if it's invite only? surely an invite-only open beta is inherently contradictory.
Depending on the agreement in place for the period known as Invite only Open beta, there 'Might' not be an NDA in place. What the agreement to sign is we will have to wait and see. Its the same principle that warhammer online are doing. So it might be Open as in Open to talk during this time (argreement permitting) but not neccessarily Open as in anyone can download the client and play. I have a Sneaky feeling we will find out 4 weeks from today ( just a feeling!)
And Funcom better learn from SWG and Vanguard and drop the NDA soon. Those who keep it up till release are hiding something, and it isn't trade secrets. The game excites me, but I am leery of Funcom after AO's release. Sure they MIGHT have learned something from it, but seeing how all the other came companies don't, Funcom might not have as well. Or at least, not enough.
Would you rather see a game release pushed back a year or have the game release witha few bugs that will be fixed?
