hmm, mainly that post from IGN is a summary of already released games. ![]()
Anyway, you're more looking for a MMORTS I think. It's not exactly as you describe it, but sure does get closer than most MMORPG's out at the moment (although Ryzoms seems to fit perfectly). It would of course be great if somebody could build a city anywhere, and not in a instanced zone (like in most MMORTS's). However I think PlaneShift also comes close. Not everybody can do it of course, as you will NEED to 3d model if you want to create anything special.

This is certainly one of the best statements I've seen arguing the validity of Darkfall after its 8 years now of hype and empty promises.
This statement was posted by 'COORS', so he certainly gets the credit. Unfortunately, the thread in which he posted it has been locked. (I don't see why, they allowed a much more aggressive and hotly debated thread about Mourning to go on for like 1500+ posts and never locked it up, but w/e)
Anyhow, any supporters of Darkfall, please respond in a mature manner to this post and try and actually defend your dream game against it please.

I love the one line responses of pure FACTS as we know it, LOL!
What exactly WILL they have?
Let's see...
They don''t need open beta testing. In-house only. Fully tested and guaranteed bug free.
They don't need an official publisher.
They don't need a site to house their game servers and provide connectivity for an MMO.
They don't need to market their product and advertise. Publishers DON'T just distribute games. They MARKET them. Even if Aventurine isn't marketing their own product, the publisher would surely perform those tasks. That's what publishers do. So, where is the marketing?
They don't need to have ANY pre-order sales which would not only give them needed income BUT provide them with a GOOD estimate on the number of EXPECTED users. This would be a tremendous help in determining how many servers will be needed at launch.
They don't need ANY professional gaming sites to have a sneak peek or a "hands on" look at the game. This would mean FREE advertising. Now what company on the planet would shy away from this?
All I hear is, "They are doing it THEIR way."

Classic. Again, truth is always funny as hell. I think that's why I always loved good ol' George Carlin.
Can you blame them for not having an open-beta? The one of AoC was the biggest failure I've seen so far.
They do have a publisher.
Since when is a site needed to host a game? This isn't a web-bases game like Runescape.
It's obvious they don't need advertisement, forums are loaded with Darkfall posts, best advertising you can get.
from what I heard, they like a rebelling company. Doing it their way, not caring of what people think, there'll be people who like it if we do it right. Can't blame them neither. Press interviews usually end up with reporters trying to get the best of the interview, and twisting every word they say.
Honestly I don't care if it comes or not. If it does, good, I'm not going to play it. If it does, we finally have a way to get rid of die-hard PvP maniacs (yes, maniacs! They're even worse then the hardcore PvP'er
).

Why can't there be a game designed around an editor?
The Sims is just one example of a game designed around an editor with built in scripts for people to play with.
Take it one step further and allow people to build and create their own dungeons in a game like WoW. Why couldn't that be possible? Obviously you would have to moderate it like everything else cause people have no self control anymore. But why does that have to be at the level of Open Source?
Make it a higher level editor, easier to use without as much coding power.
But regardless, If you havn't ever played around with Jazz, and seen some of the content people have created using the WCIII Engine your missing out. Some of the most enjoyable games i've ever played where developed by the players.
Like Dota for example! One of the best overhead pvp games ever. Created with Jazz, a "free" tool blizzard includes with their game.
I'm just talking about putting more structure to it, and actually making it a part of an MMO. Like walking into a hall of mirrors with thousands of portals and each portal takes you to a unique world created using X tool in X engine. Each one customized by its creator.
Thats a game that would never run out of content, and you would be shocked at the kind of talent you can find out there.
If Blizzard is the only company that can do it, so be it. They are #1 for a reason and probably always will be.
Forgive me my rudeness... But open your eyes! There are plenty of open-source games out there! Full of people creating their own games, but instead of portals they're called "downloads". Download a mod, copy/move it to the folder, and play it. Planeshift is an open-source mmorpg. I think there was also something like Realm Forge, which gives you 2 starter mmorpg's, which you can modify.
Or you can buy a cheap game engine (fully customizable!) like RC or Torque.
Or you can even make your own engine!
But if you don't want to work on it, or even try to learn to 3d model/program, why even try to mod anything? Can't really blame you though, we'd all want it to be click-and-drag. But you can't create original and good games with that.
And I'm going to say it again (hopefully the last time) what you're all referring to are Open-Source games! Blizzard is by no means the only company who made it a little customizable (yes, a little!). People even made a SC/WC based game engine, because the original modding was too limiting. But Blizzard ruined that project. (Stratagus).
Glest plays exactly like WC (3), but only a few people want to learn how to use the engine. If you don't want to learn anything, and just want a click-and-drag system...; have fun waiting.
I never use MySQL servers, I cane be mistaking though, but it doesn't seem to work that good on Linux... And everyone knows (or should know!) that Windows is by no means stable enough to host anything but websites.
Apache all the way for me. :}

If games used a Creature Creator like in Spore there would be even more clones that now with companies copying WoW. It is actually very limiting... And you can't build any buildings whatsoever with it, so an open-source game with a Creature Creator would fail... greatly.
Glest also has a trigger system (I guess) since 3.2 alpha. As soon as a player did that, something else would happen etc.
And that isn't a new idea, by far. Open-Source software has been around for longer than most people think. Microsoft's first OS was still open-source. Linux still is. All games that work on Linux natively are Open-Source. They just require you to do some effort to create something, rather than just adding a Creature Creator ;).
I don't know. They might have an overall look to them, but imagine a creature creator like the character creator in City of Heroes.
That would be pretty cool. And then you just assign levels, skills, loot, etc.
You have to admit it woujld be fun to play with.
True, but more like in Ryzom then. Where you just create new zones for a game, rather than being able to create a whole new one. That was it's only normal creatures are more or less the same. They can also add triggers etc; then;
In light of the recent update which changed the effects of certain AoE powers for the Tempest of Set, what is your favourite Priest archetype class in Age of Conan?
