Fortunately there won't be a wipe.
The "let's restart together on the same basis"-feeling would be over after two or three months. It would be only temporary, rewarding the extreme grinders and power-levelers and punishing the decent, helpful roleplayers that have other things in mind like community, atmosphere and newbie-help by destroying all their successes.
If a wipe is such a fine and good method to gain new motivated players, why don't the MMOs wipe their databases every two years? Right: because it's damn frustrating, it's a loss of faith and the potential to lose old players is bigger than to catch new player's attention. I wouldn't join a MMO that is owned by a company that kicks their long-time-players and most loyal customers in their butts this way.
You don't attract players through a wipe. You attract them by advertising.
You don't keep players through a wipe. You keep them with content.
As long as there is no technical reason, a wipe would be more harmful than useful for the game.
In addition to that I don't know any other MMO in which long-time-players and new players can experience the game and go together this great like it is the case in Ryzom.
Please read these points before you talk about wiping:
As the download is nearly useless to everybody whos account is not marked as VIP it would be helpful for all that have valid accounts NOT TO SPREAD the link as this causes additional traffic that doesn't help anybody (as you can't create a trial account anyway, even with a key) but is annoying for all VIP players that are allowed to log in.
So it would be kind to stop spreading the download-links as it was wished by the Ryzom Customer Support.
Only accounts that were valid and paid when the servers went down (Feb 08) are allowed (and able) to log in and play on mainland.
Accounts that were locked before are still locked and unable to play.
Trial accounts may play on the free trial island but are unable to change to main. Even if you get a valid cd-key, you won't be able to create an account or change to mainland.
Only accounts that have the VIP-status can play on mainland and there is no method to change your trial account into a VIP account.
Downloading the files doesn't help. It only enables owners of trial-accounts to play on the free trial isle. Creation of new trial-accounts is not possible.
DOWNLOADING THE FILE IS USELESS IF YOU DON'T HAVE AN EXISTING ACCOUNT.
You should mention it everytime you can't wait to post this link against the explicit wish of the Ryzom Team.
The downloads don't change normal accounts into VIPs or something like that.
The only perpose of keeping this links private is to prevent a flood of the old trial-account players invading silan or downloading it and thus making it harder for the old players (VIPs) to download their stuff because of too much traffic.
So I would appreciate if you could remove the links for about a week until most of the players that got the Email finished their downloading.
At least you should mention in the opening post that the download ist ONLY useful for players that already have a valid full account.
All others just cause unnecessary traffic for the Ryzom guys.
