Latest Blog Entry - Quest to Level/ Level to Quest...
From my blog Random Ideas for the NEXT GENERATION [craynlon]

hmm i feel im getting old :(

for 4 years i played lineage 2 and my goal was to reach the max level (wich is kind of hard in an open pvp world that needs like 100h of grind on endgame levels). leveling was basicly waiting for a mob to spawn and killing it. i know how addictive it was to level up or get better gear. hell i grinded 5h/day for weeks just to have a 2minute rush to see what my new skills would do...

now im playing conan and i discovered quests.
while people in my grp/ guild still want to kill me when i stop to read a quest dialog i still enjoy every moment of it, especially the voice overed quests in the beginning. my gamestile basicly went from killing/questing to level up to leveling up in the background while i enjoyed the quest. in conan i even turned off my xp bar in the hub.

so i was thinking:

is there any hope that mmos will become more then leveling competitions for 80% of its customers ?

what would be if you knew a quest in your mmo was written by Stephen King or directed by Quentin Tarrntino ?
- would you have more respect for these quests ?
- would you see more in them then means to move your xp bar a bit further up ?

the many ads in the web for guids that "let you level up to max in under 10 days" makes me feel that most people want to rush to some kind of mysterious endgame only to find out later that endgame = end of story in most games

in my previous blogs i asked for weekly content and got laughed at but i wonder if mmos couldnt attracked more people if they had more food for the "kotor" or "mass effect" gamers instead of trying to dangle a virtual carrot in front of the xp junkies

actually id love to see a mmo do turnbased combat right biut from watching the youtube video this doesnt seem good to me. for me the real reason to do turn based combat would be to have controll over the position of the players (similar to chess) as in the old snes or fallout  times.

actually turnbased done right (with movement, facing direction, formation) would be a good step back from the holy trinity where the tank taunts monsters to him.

turn based combat could have wizards raising walls of fire, rogues attack and vanish into darkness and a ton of other strategic elements rather then making 2 rows of players waiting till the other guys finished their move.

    • yep septembre to decembre will hopefully be very busy mmo month

i alreaddy pitty the people from chronicles of spellborne or ddo making beutifull games that have to watch from the sidelines when wow dukes it out with war

also i wouldnt want to be in the skin of the war guys because the pressure and expectation after the so-so conan launch must be immense. to me all of their concepts look brilliant and seem to evolve the mmo genre a good step forward but simple details like ui and controlls, the atmosphere or technical issues can really be only evaluated after the launch.

im still heavily undecided what i should use for conan

      i have

      nostromo (wich i use now)
im used to using it but im running out of keys to initiate combos and abilities.
also since im moving with the direction pad at the side its not that easy to doubletap movement

z-board gaming (wich i dont like because i want all 1-0 more or less close at fingertips)
i dint try it really its just setting dust. i should give it a try again to see if its better then nostromo

a logitech gamepad (im fighting to configure right so i have more then 4 attacks)
it would be my prefered controller if id overcome some issues

im really exited about the xbox launch to see how they do the controller layout
the biggest hinderance for me atm is the lower left and lower right attacks when i try to setup a gaming pad to play

If you want to have a game where the players are all Rangers, I'm sure you can manage just fine.  If the campaign requires some finessing or modification to make this viable, so be it.

That is what the DM is for.

It is the DM's job to make the game fun for the players, no matter how they choose to play.

That is the difference between a DM and a computer, and why tabletop games have the potential to be so much more entertaining.

If your DM runs his campaign like a computer, maybe you should find a new DM.

      /agreed

but the problem is that new players will get the impression they are limited and i dont want people believing that bilbo beutlin stood in the rain for hours shouting "lf tank and healer to make a ring run"

    • omg this is the end..................

5th edition will have an option to walk away from the table and let a bot handle the grind....
5th adition will let you pay 5$ to wotc for powerleveling your character from 1 to 26
5th edition will have a petition queque for your gm

in all honesty the "features" described by the author came from limitations that computer games have in contrast to pen and paper.

the reason why each mmo and their siblings use standard grp layout of tank, healer, dps (and buffer) is because the quests/ encounters relay on linear, scripted computer ai. in pen&paper its totally ok and challenging for 2 mages and a clerik or a group of thieves to do an adventure.

the origin of pen&paper rpg for me is not some ruleset but to tell an interactive story by the gm with an audience of players. the rules are only there to ensure that the actions are some kind of limited and fun to play out. in that aspect computer mmorpgs have still years to catch up to classic p&p
