      Hmmm....

Now it'll have to compete against WOTLK which releases Nov 3, 08. And then a month later, it'll have to compete with SC2.

At least those are the dates I saw - nothing confirmed.

SC2 compete with WAR? rofl.. i don't know about a single mmo gamer that play RTS games, but people got different taste for sure.. but if we gonna compare gengres all the time, than why dont just say how small the mmo gengre is compared to FPS games?

I play RTS games and alot of my friends who love MMOS play RTS games.  We also play FPS games not everyone is genre picky and stick to only one genre.    Of course we don't consider our single player games as competetion for time with our MMO games.

SC2 doesn't even have a release date at best we might see it on the shelves next year maybe christmas so even if single player games could compete with MMO games (they can't since MMOS garner money for every subscriber the stays past 30 days) SC2 wouldn't be in the running.   If anything SC2 will probably hurt WoW since tons of WoW playesr are HUGE Blizzard fans to begin with.

btw Dreamwing just because EA STore has a date posted (like all other game stores) doesn't mean its official.   Mythic would most definitly do a huge press announcement for their release date so any date anyone mentions including stores right now is purely speculation.

      WAR (Warhammer Online)
    • Is warhammer a "sandbox" ?

yes its a great game but get real dude. trying to win over a few more subs by lying to them is just a dumb thing to do.  no it does not fill the sandbox criteria (of which there is more than 1 requirement)

I agree..dunno what Sarile is talking about, anyone looking for a sandbox in WAR will be hugely disappointed.  I mean there is freedom of choice on how you want to progress and more choices of activities to do than some currently popular games have but WAR's far from sandbox.

The closest games that were sandbox but still had game content are Vanguard (failure) , Horizons (ultimate failure), UO (not a failure but its game portion was destroyed over the years), SWG (pre NGE), & Shadowbane.  (these are just the ones im familiar with enough to comment on).

If developers would think big but design smaller, games like the above would probably do really well.  The problem is most developers that have tried to do sandbox hybrid MMOS think really big and try to do way to much for release.  THey should think big and then decide on a couple of the most important features to have for launch and use the rest as free content or expansions.

The purest sandbox in existance is Techincally Second Life.  There's absolutely no game mechanics at all and all the 'content' from vehicles to houses to business's are built directly by the users.  Of course its all wacked out hideious and runs like crap too lol.

      WAR (Warhammer Online)
    • Would you play a forced grouping game?

If more games could make teamwork more important than actual grouping we'd probably find that solo players will and like to play with others they just don't want to wait X hours / mins to get a group together or in some cases join a group then have to ditch because of RL.  They want to jump in and play.

Forced grouping never weeds out the asses from the good people.  Plenty of group loving people are the biggest asses in a game sometimes.

No, I want actual grouping. Are you in the WAR beta? If not, then I don't think you can really know whether or not WAR will ahve a good grouping game. I thought DAoC had a good grouping game, but I don't know if WAR will or not.

So far the best feature I"ve heard about in WAR, is open groups. You don't have to ask to join, if a party has the group set to "open" you just click on it and join it automatically.

Yea im in Beta and everything the Devs have said as far as grouping / rewards and allowing viable options for both groupers and soloers is true.  Especially in the PQ sense.  (and i can say that because they've talked publically about it)

To me forced grouping is where the mechanics of the game give you no other choice but to group such as FFXI, DDO, and EQ2 (originally).  You couldn't play solo at all.  That is forced grouping to me and various others.   Personally i've never heard of the supposed solors don't want to do things with others at all peice I've maybe seen 1 or 2 players ever like that.  They were social but played the economy crafting etc he just wasn't into dungeons, grouping, etc.  I think putting all soloers into the same catagory is a mistake.  Some people simply have days they want to play but not find a group, some only want to group for certain things, some want to play with others but not be forced into an actual group they like to have a choice.

WAR's PQ system is the perfect system for non forced grouping (IMHO) that involves group play.  Your all playing for the same goal...to beat the encounter.   If you heal someone your rewarded, if you help someone in a fight your rewarded regardless of group you get rewarded.   Essentially the PQ System allows you to be ungrouped and work along side a group if you hit a mob and they hit a mob your rewarded according to the damage done not whether your in a group.   (though if your in a group your whole group gets adequately rewarded for the group members kill regardless of outside help).   If a healer heals someone in another group or thats solo they get rewarded.   In encourages everyone to work together without forcing you to actually "join a group".   RvR works the same way though groups obviously have the advantage since they'll have 5 other people watching their back where as a solo player would want to stick near a group and not be caught alone somewhere.

There's very few activities in war that require you ot be in a physical group, dungeons and the king encounter are the only 2 I can think of where you have to physically group in order to participate & succeed.

If you pay attention to what the dev's say they want realms to work together & group and there are benefits to groups but they don't want to punish or leave out people who don't want too or dont' have time to build a group.

I understand what your trying to say you want a game where only absoluetly like minded people are going to exist.   There doesn't seem to be a short supply of those games.  Personally I won't play them I find that heavily forced games are filled with far more uptight elitests and honestly ...elitism is for kids.

    • Customization? Better? Worse? Or Different?

The idea of player customization in WAR came up in a previous post of mine.  I hadn't previously considered this to be a big deal because customization has been such a huge part of other games.  Everquest is the best example I can think of (EQ 1) just because I played it the longest, but nearly every person wore something different and looked completely different.

For me, this is neither here nor there, merely a part of gameplay that I've previously taken for granted.  It seems that in WAR the stress has been placed on tactical and strategy customization rather than looking extremely different from person to person.

This seems to go hand-in-hand with the idea of the board game, in that people are less unique (fighting in similarly painted squads) and more a part of a bigger fight.

Personally, I'm excited to see the reaction to a new emphasis, since it has always seemed to me that a good tactic is universal and will spread like wildfire throughout the game.  I'm interested to see if the game is truly so tactically customizable that no one tactic can dominate other tactics to an unreasonable degree.

      Definitly better.

The 2 Tone peice by peice armor dying system (every major peice can have 1 to 2 colors used on it ) and the trophies alone blow any game thats been released in the past 2 to 3 years gear customization away.

Dye's can be made, bought (in standard colors from vendors), then there's colors that are only available through unlocks including guild unlocks...then there's guild banners, cloaks, etc.

Add trophies which there are thousands to find and unlock that you can hang i think in over 20 different possible places on your toon (up to i believe they said 5 at a time)....totally awsome.

No idea if the talismen system works like most game's enchant system where it adds a glow...I dont think it does though they seemed adamently opposed to the over glowy kiddie look to weapons.

While it looks as if hair and facial wise there's not a huge choice in who really looks & memorizes that?  I don't remember people by their toon's face but rather their gear (or name).  Just so happens tho that alot of games recently everyone had the same sets of gear and no way to customize it so you had to go simply by their name. (cough wow)
