They aren't. Only PART of the player base likes item shops.
Asia started to use more and more item shops but a significant part of the players there don't want item shop games there anymore.
People want to know what they're getting. With item shops you don't know. They can change the game as much as they want.
In asia it became a common theme to change the cash shop items and make them more powerfull after release. That pissed off a good deal of players who don't want cash shop anymore.
I won't buy SoE games if they're cash shop.
Can you provide an article detailing this exodus away from cash shop MMOs in Asia? Can you explain your conclusions in any way?
Nearly every MMO in Asia is a cash shop MMO. The9 even tried to turn WoW China into a cash shop because they would make a lot more money that way, however Blizzard didn't allow it.
The monthly fee payment plan is becoming too rigid for new MMO gamers, the recent string of flops does not help matters at all either. Casual gamers do not want to be locked into a monthly payment plan for a video game. You hardcore gamers can scoff all you want but MMO publishers no longer care about the hardcore that comprises maybe 10% of their consumers.
Cash shop MMOs are flexible. If the game sucks then you didn't pay anything which means all you was time and not money. If you like it you can buy as much from the cash shop as possible. If you want to take a break from the game at the beginning of the month its fine because you didn't already pay your fee because there wasnt one.
Waterlily - I doubt you would buy any SOE game, monthly fee or cash shop, judging by your signature.
I'm all bummed about the show coming to an end and this is just salt in the wound.
A good real MMORPG based on Avatar is possible but it would take time, money and effort. Three things companies don't want to spend when it comes to a video game based on a children's IP.
They said that an EQ3 is very unlikely because EQ2 was a mistake that split and alienated EQ1s userbase.
Ive seen people drop $30 in one day in those Korean item mall MMOs. And they are item mall MMOs where the best thing you can buy is an exp booster, no gear or weapons or anything of that sort.
Item mall MMOs are the clear evolution of the MMORPG. Cheap people like me can play for free and the over achievers can buy all they want without limit. Everyone wins, especially the game's publisher.
Because Blizzard didn't spend 5 years programming the fancy state of the art graphics then realise they had to make the rest of the game at the last minute.
Blizzard knows that it's not all about good graphics, you have to have a good engine running everything too.
DCU looks very early. Will have to see how it turns out.
Champions Online however has 2 MAJOR strikes against it.
1 - No Villains at launch. Big surprise that Cryptic didn't learn from their past mistakes.
2 - Jack Emmert. You people may think SOE is terrible but SOE doesn't have anything on Jack Emmert. His incompetence ruined CoH and it will ruin Champions.
