The truth is probably somewhere in between. I believe that Blizzard has the funding and means to at least have a much better overview of what the competition is capable of, long before the general population ponders about it. It is also possible that they took into consideration all the added content the new MMOs will bring and have already decided on a plan. A plan of either adapt and create similar features, or disregard them if they don't agree with the scope of the game.
The end result of this competition is a better game for people that play the game.
I'm not sure however on how many of you believe that all the additions in the new expansion would be planned and implemented if it wasn't for the compeltition from WAR and other MMOs.

You still play AoC Xasapis, I remember you being the author of many a fanboish post pre-release, just curious.
I gave credit where credit was due and cleared miscoseptions as much as I was allowed from NDA. The only thing I defended is the right for diversity, which made me positively inclined towards AoC (same thing holds true for WAR, Aion and any new releases). If you check my history under the light of the things that everyone knows now, you'll see what I mean.
Due to work obligations I'm not playing any MMO atm. My limited free time is occuppied by TF2.
To Lobotomist:
A bit off topic but Aion seems to be a good game coming 2008-9 as well.
To Saurus930 :
Mainstream has caught up with MMOs, nothing else.

I could swear that the OP is Zorndorf ... a blind WoW zealot. But just in case he's not ...
Why WoW bringing more players with the new expansion is news, or worth mentioning? The game has a very high retention rate, it's more than normal than a big portion of the players that have at some point left might give the expansion a try. It happened with the previous one and it's more than likely that it will happen again. Even I'm a bit curious, it's just that certain lack of qualities that drove me away still remain.
Besides, WoW doesn't need the hype. Unless people prefer to eat one kind of food for the rest of their lives, MMO sites like this one does a good job presenting the outsiders of the market. Even if they are not on par with the giants. Even if they have major issues. Diversity is a necessity of the human nature.
Having said that, I find myself enjoying Team Fortress 2 more than any MMO these day. Weird times, at least for me.
