    • The base nature of MMOs
    • I have been playing online for as long as playing online was an option.  And that used to be at 110-300 Baud.  I've noticed a few top-level system patterns over the years and was wondering if others had some to share both as reminders for myself, and possibly warnings to all (player and dev alike).

      (1) Players will try to work outside the intent of the game.  They will often succeed.  This is not one, two, or even just a group of players, but rather a large majority of them all and for many of the game mechanisms -- maybe not all, but more then just one.

      - If they can twink, they will.

      - If they can speed up the leveling rate, they will.

      - If they can take advantage of a weakness, they will.

      - If they can overinflate the price of an item, they will.

      - If they can beat an encounter in a 'novel' way, they will.

      (2) Players do not play nice.  Many do orders of magnitude better then the worse, but exclusion is as old a tool of cooperative play as any other.

      - If you require Any extra effort to play with, you will be excluded (at times).

      - If you require Any extra knowledge to work with, you will be excluded (at times).

      - if you require Anything of another player, you will be excluded (at times).

      - If you are not as good as another player, you will be excluded (at times).

      - If you are Really good, you will be excluded (at times).

      - Exclusivity is its own reward.

      (3) A member type will be labeled 'Overpowered'.

      (4) A member type will be labeled 'Underpowered/Useless'.

      (5) Dev Teams will claim the game as "theirs" not "ours".  They will act on that claim.

      - They will favor some players.

      - They will favor some member types.

      - They will take advantage of game mechanisms for personal reasons.

      (6) Dev Teams will continuously change the game due to (1-5) above.

      - Even if it breaks the game.

      - Even if it costs them 50% or more of their entire subscription base.

      (7) Dev Teams understand less about their game then their players.  Less even then some of their new players.

      - Ivory tower syndrom will be pervasive.

      - Informent bias will be pervasive.

      - Analysis bias will be pervasive.

      (8) Almost no games end.  Careers do end, but not enough of them.

      (9) A lot of games should end, many should expand, for some evolution should be stopped.  The rare one should start over from Day 1 with all new and mostly different update plans then they actually followed.

      (10) Left for future expansion. (like every game leaves critical features for imaginary future expansions).

    • Not trying to start a war, just curious about your complaints

Not those that have never paid one day in Vanguard or decided to base their opinion off a review. How bad is this game to you? Really what put you over the edge to not give it a chance or see through your little gripe or a few bugs. What caused you to log in for the first time, love everything about the game, not notice some bugs, read some reviews or forum complaints and decide and start changing your opinion of the game? What bugs put you over the edge. I want you to name some.

Hardware glitches, some performance issues? You go buy a game like crysis, COD4 or anything new at that and you cant run at full settings. SO what do you do? You lower them right? Cause damn if your not going to get you 50.00 dollars worth. You compensate... thats what you do. Aside from some performance issues, a few bugs, I yet have to hear about; does it take that little to keep you from a game that by far has more potenial that any game out there? Grpahics a 9 perhaps a 10 if you have the hardware, depth and uniqueness cant touch, bar none. If all your friends were playing it, you bet your arse you'd be playing it right along with them. How many of you started with a bunch a friends and you have one influential friend who leaves with the rest of the crowd and you follow? Honestly tell me that Vanguard gave you back what you desired for a moment,  but you never stayed focused long enough to see the genious of the game it really is...

ps...how many of you keep coming back after a patch and some good reviews.. Admit it you want it to be your perfect little MMO, but never will.

Look at EQ how screwed up it was... and BAM...biggest MMO ever...

      peace.

I'm too tired of the topic to list it out again.  But thanks for reminding me to change my review of the game.  Since the helms went in I'll need to drop that graphics @ 10 down to about a 7.  Yes, lack of customization means that much too me.

And for the record Vanguard's issues are far bigger then the game itself.  It's more that Sony just doesn't get it.  And I am now fairly certain, they never will.

      Vanguard: Saga of Heroes
    • GU4 Aftermath: Recently Re-Subbed players' persepctive
    • Couple of rebuttals to OP:

-Auction house prices were not too high.  I never once bought gold, my characters (were routinely dressed in level appropriate armor (or even higher after first toon got to about level 14 and had made some money:  on the auction house selling named MOB drops!!!).

The loss of character customization is unexcusable.  If graphics ARE going to be reworked -- do it first.  Why should WE suffer to gain something I'll likely have turned off anyways -- helms.  I could care less about helms if the faces that show through all look alike.  It defines SOE -- if it makes the devs life one iotta easier -- F___ the customer.  I'm through with that.

      Enjoy.
