    • No time to play LOTRO :*(, so looking for a free MMO
    • Hey all,

I'd really like to play LOTRO, but I don't have much time right now and therefore paying for a sub just wouldn't be worth it. What would be a good, fresh, FREE* alternative?

I'd like to get into something like LOTRO, with a great (at least decent) storyline and some playability. I realize that beggars can't always be choosers with free MMOs, but is there something interesting out there?

Preferably new, though. I'd hate to get into a game swamped by veterans.

*by FREE, I mean something that's completely free to play OR something I'd spend once on and not pay any monthly fees for (like GW, but don't recommend this).

    • Magic World Online or MU Online?
    • Hey I'm looking for a side F2P MMORPG that will keep me from obsessing about LOTRO too much:). Currently, I got back into Conquer Online (which is ok, I guess) but wondering if there's anything better or newer.

I narrowed it down to these two games. Which one should I go with? I'd like to get opinions and just try one of them (I don't want to make 2 more F2P accounts unless I really have to).

I'm big about customization. Which of the two offers more of it?

Also, this would be a SIDE MMO. So if I could have a feature like the training grounds in Conquer Online, that would be nice. Which of the two games offers more ability to train without playing, per se?

      Thanks for the input!

    • DDO vs LOTRO vs Vanguard
    • I'd say LOTRO (since I'm playing it and it's awesome :) ), but you'll probably think that the classes are a little stale (after having played WOW). Here are my thoughts in general concerning LOTRO:

Pros: beautiful, very interesting quests, awesome storyline, good mix of dungeons and integrated play, VERY mature community, RP (if you're into it), very immersing (sounds vague but maybe you understand what I mean), CHEAP ($10 for the game and $10/month or lifetime membership? Sounds like a better deal compared to other P2P MMOs)

Cons: very archetypal classes, similar layout to WOW (UI and such), a bit too realistic (though I thought WOW was too cartoonish)

      I haven't played the others.

    • Looking for free MMO with a 2D/Diablo2-style layout...suggestions?
    • Hey everyone! I'm currently playing LOTRO and loving it :) ! But I just want to start up a new MMO on the side so that I won't obsess over LOTRO and then grow to hate it quickly or something. Anyway, here are my criteria:

      - Has to be a free MMORPG.

      - Should be newish: I feel that if it's ancient and full of high-levels I won't feel at home.

      - Has to have the D2 or Conquer-style layout that's not 3D but not quite 2D either.

      - Has to have some replay value (as I tend to Alt around before settling on a character).

      - Has to have a good community and a decently-sized population.

      - Has to not be so item mall driven that I can't do anything without spending money (I DON"T want to spend money on this side MMO).

This is mostly to get me ready for Diablo 3. I don't expect to stick to it for too long, unless it's pretty good.

      Please post your suggestions. Thanks!

    • Why so many MMOs encourage player masochism...

I disagree, simply because I enjoy playing MMOs (at least the few good ones that I found, such as GW and LOTRO, that didn't give the aftertaste of intense grind and boredom after I played them). If MMOs were not my style, I obviously eventually wouldn't like them, now would I?

Unless of course you define MMOs to be the types of games that HAVE to involve indefinite grind, all for the sake of that "someday", when you actually start to like it. In that case, I don't like these "MMOs" of yours. Also, you're typecasting yourself into the corner of...well, a masochist (no offense BTW ).

I say people shouldn't have to be infinitely tolerant of the boredom that is bestowed by many of the MMOs out there today. I say developers should think outside the box more. Good games are GAMES, not JOBS or CHORES. Games are meant to offer avenues for relaxation, thrill, and yes, some personal advancement (be it material "in-game" wealth, skill, experience, or any combination of the above), regardless of how long one has been playing for.
