The question arose in Aion forums on these boards and I’m taking the opportunity to use it to write some thoughts I got after just a month being active in mmorpg.com.
It’s easy to answer. Because is the only game they have played and got to know enough about it to use it as reference. They don’t have right now any other possibility.
Let me backup my statement with few numbers and history.
My source of data is of course www.mmogchart.com .Really the only one I know about, but I think its reliable at some extend and more than enough for what I want to say here.
In October 2004 before WoW launch the estimate number of subscriptions to MMOs worldwide was 6.6 millions. No more than 2.5 were players of the western countries.
I’m very generous here because I just am deducting 3.7 million subscriptions coming from LineageI and II almost all coming from Korea. Sure there are some numbers to deduct coming from Asian players in games like Final Fantasy XI, EQ or other less populated games at that time, but anyway there aren’t information about it and these numbers are not so important, lets keep the 2.5 millions as accurate enough.
In April 2008 (I’m sorry, there is no more recent data available) the total estimate worldwide subscriptions were around 16 (yes around 10 millions in WoW) the information available about Asian market is Lineage and Lineage II got 2.1 million and WoW Asian markets more than 5.5 then we get 8.4 millions in the western countries coming from WoW (4.5 millions), Dofus (0.5 millions. Surprise?) and 3.4 coming from all the other games including Asian people that I’m sure have their share on the grow).
Where I’m going it’s that there are a lot of people, at least 4.5 millions that just played WoW in their whole life. I just made the above wall of numbers to show that at least 4.5 millions are new gamers that just played WoW (the right number is probably way higher). They don’t know any other MMORPG than WoW and in consequence, they can only use WoW as a reference, not because they are stupid or so. There is no point into argue about if WoW is a good or bad reference, it’s the only one they can use.
And it is not just a question of game designs, graphics or mechanics it’s a question about the game community too.
Let me go a bit further, that is my real goal with this post, some of these 4.5 or more millions of people have started to look for new games to play, asking friends, veterans in game, looking in forums like this and so. They have been received by lots of these so called “veterans” “old school players” “True PvPrs” and so with words we all know and I don’t need to repeat here. Talking shit about the game they enjoyed for long time and their community, insulting them. Also these “vets” tend to show to all their supposed superiority and strong feelings on being the owners of the truth.
The rest you all know about, these mmorg.com boards are full of it. As some one said using other words in the general boards (Sorry I can’t remember the poster nor the words they used, I just keep the idea in my mind) these is the new MMORPG game. “The Epic battle in the boards”. It has no rules, well at least not about what is a right behaviour between persons.
I share how the newcomers feel about the “old community of MMORPGs”. I know that not all pre WoW players are acting like these people. I’m sure they are just a little bunch in comparison with the entire pre WoW player base. Unfortunately in general they are a lot more vocal and furthermore to destroy it’s easier than to build. For some people to destroy their own little villages seems to be easier than to help to build nice towns around them.
I know also that there are people with stupid behaviours in these newcomers but sorry I blame less them because lot of times is just reaction against the aggression.
As it happens in all wars, nowadays, they both are blaming each other about who starts the war.
I’m not going to write more about other considerations on these things that some on practical matters.
If I try to show to someone how good is the music I like and I know he/she don’t have ever heard or may be not in the appropriate way. Sure is the worse strategy starting with “your music is shit” “you know nothing about music” “you are a retard noob because you just listen to this bunch of money makers” “come here I have the true music” and as soon as they shows some negative reaction or doubt I follow with some like “we don’t need you. You blind, stupid moron” “go to listen your shit” Probably I can finish in my Ivory Tower crying together with my comrades (that act the same) about “how stupid people is” and “musicians nowadays are just a money farmers” and so on.
If more than 6 years ago when I was starting in AC2 my path in the MMOs I could have been received with “what a f**** moron” “go to play your Diablo shit you stupid carebear” “go to dupe at Battle.net” probably I wasn’t expending the thousands of hours I did expend playing MMOs and when the subject comes in any talk you can guess what I’m going to say about people playing online.
Fortunately to me the nice people in Dawnsong help me to start, teach me how to fight the easiest solo mob, how to play in group, what is a clan, how to enjoy the PvP. What a server in arms could do against the most terrible monster. I’m in debt with these guys and gals. They opened a door that leads to uncountable hours of fun instead of closing it.

That's an honest question. I've dug through the game's official site and read some on this forum and on aionsource. I don't see a clear answer. Much of what I see screams "WoW-clone", which from a business perspective might be it, I guess, but doesn't explain the player-driven hype.
What is there that makes it so that someone who doesn't like WoW could like Aion? Or that gives someone who does like WoW a reason to quit that game for Aion?
The graphics are stunning, of course. While that's not a bad thing, the history of video games is littered with awful games that had graphics that were quite impressive in their time.
Much has been said about flying, but to say that a game involves flying could mean so many different things that it means basically nothing without elaboration. EVE involves flying. Microsoft Flight Simulator involves flying. Super Mario World involves flying. Civilization 2 involves flying. But no two of those mean anything remotely similar by flying.
The PvPvE system could mean a lot of different things, too. As best I can tell, it might mean nothing more than a pve area where you can get attacked by other players. That's hardly an innovation. Is there some stronger reason for NCsoft to coin a new term, apart from hype?
Is there something else I've missed? Other threads to ask about the same question have been shouted down in such an absurd manner that one could easily be left to conclude there isn't a point to the game. It's as if Aion fanboy idiots are trying to outdo Darkfall fanboy idiots; the latter may be completely nuts, too, but can at least point to a number of attempted innovations in Darkfall.
As several other posters have said, you just can expect subjective answers. Not only because most of us haven’t played the game but because what is appealing some people and give them fun, could be boring and pointless for others.
In my case I’m going to try Aion just for three reasons:
High fantasy game with some Asian style in the art design and good graphics. Then I know I’ll like the environment. It’s just a plus not a main reason.
It’s a game made by NCSoft. Have some guaranty to me about being well done and polished to some extend. Also that give me some concerns about RMT and bots but in the worse case I learned to live with this in Lineage II.
And the key point to me. Apparently an important part of the “end game” in Aion is about group conflict and power (Abyss/factions), will be better to me if it was more free than just factions (I’m a fan of Lineage II conflict system) but anyway.
Combat mechanics, level system, skill system and other things that I know are important to other people aren’t to me, but all in all Aion looks as a good package able to give me fun for some time.
Anyway I cross the fingers, my last experiences in MMORPGs haven’t been a big success.
As you can see very subjective.

Oh I already posted a thread on the Darkfall forums stating that I think over 90% of the people coming from games like World of Warcraft (and I only state that game because it's the most well known), will quit within the first couple of days to (maybe) weeks, ESPECIALLY the first time they're PKed and their full body of loot is looted.
It's simple, most people WILL NOT be able to handle Darkfall, and that's perfectly fine, because I'm honestly getting sick and tired of playing with those kind of people anyway
There is a thread around asking why all the hate for the Darkfall community.
Here a good example.

Not lvl based no item based, so newbees can just jump in and explore if a vetran comes and newbees are in party they can beat this vetran its not like most mmo's out there.
The devs will not compromise to cater for carebears or themepark casuals so hardcore pvp with full loot will stay no matter what players want this game is pureply made for this core is build around it.
Its almost imposible to make pve game out of darkfall:)
This is the biggest piece of miss information i have heard in a while the reason i come here rarely these days.
The game is skill based each skill goes from level 1-100 and you need xp to gain these levels of skill.
Newbies can maybe jump a veteran if he is asleep.
PvP in game is part of the Empire/Kingdom building, PvE will be important in game and it is touted that PvE will be harder than PvP and also the loot /recipie/crafting materials will mainly come from this. The FPS elements are tactical with delays on actions so it is not twitch, really uin place to stop auto targeting abuse no more, and to allow first and 3rd person combat to also promote stealthy skills using the environment. Beta review have identified combat is drawn out and tactical, most of the skill is in using the environment cover and the skills you have.
Read the Curse review Tasoses latest revie if you think PvE is not possible and solo you will see you are wrong.
FFA PvP and Full Loot are just two feature of many, if that is all you plan to do you misunderstand this game badly and will get no-where other than being a laughing stock.
Around 0.001% of the world area will be cities where most PvP conflict will take place the rest will be PvE
Really two very diferent guesses of what Darkfall is going to be. This has been the history in Darkfall boards, official, mmorpg.com and many others. Fortunately we will know what is the real Darkfall in less than 3 weeks. The end of the Darkfall-fiction is coming, Welcome to the real Darkfall.
Imho in any MMORPG time and group organization allways > any other thing including a very demanding hand-eye coordination (lately called "THE SKILL"). It will take more or less time
to notice it depending on each game but at the end these two things rule.
MMORPGs are allways about time.
Lineage II of course, may be because is the only FFA and open world i have played.
Which race has the best starting area in Warhammer Online?
