Yes, the first wave of alpha-invites was really done in a very odd way.
I hope/guess that they have learned from the debacle and will send out future invites based on the emails they already gathered from the applicants.

I guess/hope that Steefel is flirting with a pay-per-hour based model (something like 50 cents per hour, for people who play very casually, a pay method also very popular in Asia).
A micro-transaction system would indeed be bad and turn a lot of players off.
If you read the article carefully, they stated that the micro-transaction model is geared towards the young & teens and they believe that is a much bigger market than hardcore gamers.
If you read the article carefully, you will note that they did not talk about a micro-transaction system at all.
They just cannot do that, or it will be the NGE of LotRo. LotRo has an especially high share of older players (30+) who would run away screaming in crowds, if they were to introduce any micro-transaction in LotRo.

You need to download the US trial, that's the only way I see.
With a retail key it should function just as a normal installation.

When you apply you also get a code for an in-game item, the Ranger's Cloak.
I know, technically it says that you need to complete all the deeds in the 3 preview games first, but I definitely never completed all of them (gave up S&T early out of frustration), and still got the code for the Cloak immediately after registering for beta.
What characteristics of an MMORPG do you look at most?
