The new expansion, Return of the Lich King, is based back in the original law and storyline of Wow, having learned from TBC that "just inventing stuff" kinda ruins the plot- eg Drenai (WTF), Blizz have returned to the original story line and characters. But, have created a new Hero Class, The Death Knight. The Beta is a complete realm, with all the usual character creation options, but the real point of it is to create a Deathknight- which can be from any class.
Death Knights start at lvl 55 with good green gear, but they have their own starting and training area which will provide a full set of serious Blue before you exit for the Eastern Plaguelands.
This starting area is heavily story line driven, though you are free to wander off and kill anything that is dumb enough to fight you. There are some really fun quests along the way and the pace of learning your new character is fairly frenetic.
As usual yuo have three channels for specialisation, and the added bonus of choosing a specific characteristic for your weapon- which you then "Rune Forge" so it permenantly assists you in that specific way.
You emerge into the Eastern Plagueland as part of an unholly alliance against the forces of 'the light' (no matter what your faction) but without spoiling things, all is not what it seems. The Deathknight at lvl 55-56 in full superior gear looks and is awsome- (equivalent to a lvl 60 in epic gear I would say). You are only going to be allowed to create one per realm where you have an existing character at lvl 55 or more.
I am sure things will change slightly at general release, but over all I found the new class and starting area to be enormous fun and very satisfying to play.
