    • A Lesson Learned From Runescape
    • We each like different things about a game.

For myself, I don't want to feel nervous at every turn, knowing that I could die at any moment.  No thanks, I want to be uber, I want to pwn stuff.  I have no desire to die against a level 12 murloc, let's save the tough encounters for the bosses, so that they have weight.

Item loss?   I played for hours and hours to finally get lucky enough to find some sweet item and then one death and I lose it?   I'd quit the game on the spot.

Yes, the better gear should be rarer or harder to get.   But seriously, feel "awe" at the pixels some other player has required?   Nope, just means they've put in more hours to the game or gotten luckier drops than me.

    • Why do you post in forums.....?
    • I make many posts on forums, mostly positive, but not all.

The purpose of a forum is not just to extoll the virtues of something, it's to offer information or opinions.  If all opinions were positive about anything, it's either a great thing or only one point-of-view is posting.  This is not terribly helpful as many of us enjoy different things about the game; pvp vs pve, grouping vs soloing, etc.

Why read a review about a movie or a product or anything if you don't want an honest opinion of it?   If you're going to "disapprove" of reviews that don't agree with your point, then you've already made up your mind about it.   Perhaps there's aspects of that product that you hadn't considered.   Collectively, our opinions are more accurate than on our own.

I recently made a post about Warhammer, not bashing the game, but mentioning that many of the pros of that game did not sound like pros to me and my playstyle.   While I got many intelligent responses, I got a whole bunch of flamers too telling me I shouldn't bother posting just to say something negative.   That is just plain silly.   As long as it's not simple trolling, ie you have a point, negative opinions can be just as valuable as positive ones.

Many people bash Wow on these forums, but obviously some people like it else it wouldn't have record numbers of people playing it.  So, does that mean that those who don't like Wow are right or those who do are?   You'd have to read what those who like it like about it and vice versa and then decide for yourself.

That is why some people make negative posts.   Some, it's pure trolling, true, but many are simply offering an honest opinion, which is the whole point of a forum.

    • Warhammer sounds interesting, but definitely not a game for me.
    • Well, I didn't need as much flameproof clothing as I thought I might have.    I tip my hat with respect to all those non-reactionary and intelligent posters, whether you agree with my opinion or not.

At no point did I intend my post to sound trollish, and I apologize if it came off that way.    I guess I got a little exasperated with a zillion posts lauding this game as the second coming for MMOs.    I was merely trying to show that many of the new features that so many were extolling did not entice all players and playstyles.

At the least, it is incumbent for us all to remember that we each enjoy different aspects of gaming, and no one way is more or less of value than another, save perhaps for those few who game only to grief others.

Lastly, remember this is a forum, which exists for the intent of discussing differing opinions.  It would be pointless for it to exist only to have everyone agree on everything.

      Good gaming to all.

    • Warhammer sounds interesting, but definitely not a game for me.
    • Alright, I'll stick my head back in the noose so many people seem to want to pull tight.

First off, I have played video games for over 30 years (I'll be 46 this year), so yes, I have experience with gaming.   I have played, to varying degrees, UO, AO, AoC, EQ, EQII, CoH, TR, LotRO, WoW, Ryzom, Eve, and probably a few others I can't remember.  I mention this only to show that yeah, I have experience with MMOs.

And let me humbly correct some of you.  There is NO part of the definition of MMO that means forced grouping.   None.    This is simply the way many of them have been designed, and I suggest that design needs to change.   There are many aspects of an MMO I enjoy, including the large cities filled with lots of people, the auction houses, the massive persistant world.  All these things and more make a game feel alive in a way a single player game never can.    Just because I'd rather solo most of the time is no justification whatsoever for not enjoying an MMO.

I am not anti-social or anti-grouping, I'm against forcing people to group to see content.   I'm against a game forcing players to do stuff they don't want to do, just to get a content they do, like clearing trash en route to a boss, which, AFAIK, no one enjoys.

I do not enjoy PvP.  I am not against having it in a game, just against it being a main focus.   This is for two reasons:

      1.   All those people who are pvp'ing are not available to PvE, and since so many MMOs require groups, that just makes it that much harder to find one.

      2.  Skills.  Everyone likes to go on about how they want to be challenged, of how they want skills to have a much bigger part vs gear.   The problem for me is that most of these required skills are twitch-based, and not strategy-based.     This is problematic in a online game, because it can give advantages to those with a faster connection.   I do ok (not uber) in single-player twitch games, but as I live in a remote area, I do not do well in online pvp.

I did not make this post to bash Warhammer, in fact I stated quite clearly that it is probably a very fine game.   I merely pointed out that many of the virtues of the game which people are extolling are, for me, mostly negative ones.   Practically every post on these forums so far around this game was, at the time, praising it like the be-all and end-all.   I only wanted to offer another point-of-view, which is the purpose of a forum.

If you disagree with me, then fine, say so.   But in a forum like this, try to argue the points of the argument, and not make ad hominem statements deriding the character of the person making them as a way of undermining their beliefs.

Why can they not create a really good game? I mean there are alot of games out there that if combined would have the best gameplay experience ever.

As another poster said, what one person thinks of as a great game feature another dislikes.

An example of this would be, End game content of World of Warcraft (dungeons, boss fights, etc.).

For me, the endgame is when Wow starts to suck.

A fully interactive world like ShadowBane. Where you can (after you have reach 20 and adventured beyond newbie island) Build your own cities in just about any location and design it to be to your guild liking.

Sounds interesting, but also sounds like a lot of micromanagement.

A combat system like a lot of single player games. A good example of this would be Assissins Creed. It would be nice to see a combat system focus more on the abilities of the player and less on the equipment that character is wearing. A level 20 should be able to kill a 50 if he or she knows how to play thier character.

I have very few leet skills, despite playing video games for 30 years.  I don't want to have to have lightning reflexes and excellent targetting skills.   I just want to be able to play casually, at my own pace.

An interesting and continuesly progressing story line INGAME would be nice. I don't want to spend precouis playing time reading lore on a website. A decent to date example of this is AOC IMO.

A PVP system that promoted active PVPing for those that wanted it and disciplined those that "picked on" lower lvl characters. Again with the combat system I purposed would help here greatly.

I've never enjoyed any aspect of PvP.  Remember my lack of leet skills?

Finally, A well balanced economic system would be great to have. If you make your game focus more on player ability and less on the items they have, then you cut out a lot of unneccessary spending and thus making less likely to have player relying on 3rd party farmers to get anywhere in this game.

Well, this has been my opinion and I appreciate my time!

      Thanks,

      Corevenis

BTW, I know im not a grammar major! So please go easy on me...  :)

I wasn't trying to be argumentative, I'm just giving my honest opinions and showing that we all want different things.   If a game had many (not all) of the features you describe, you might find it an excellent game but I wouldn't play it because of those features.   The result of this is that many games fall in the middle, making them not great for either of us.
