I just cancelled my subsciption to AoC, I played EQ for about 5 years and loved it, but being older now with a family, i cannot spend hours a night playing, Does Vanguard require you to play hours a night to get stuff accomplished, lookin for a game where i can spend some time playing solo/grouping and eventually raiding a bit...is Vanguard worth it, and is it fun...honest answers please, I am deciding whether or not to play this game...thank you.
Imagine everything bad about AoC, now make it worse, and give it a lame ass art direction where all the characters look the same with different heads popped on the top of them...
Take away more content.
Then make it an EQ clone.
Then have SOE run it, even if they cannot be blamed for it being a less-than-half finished turd when it dropped on the gaming world.
And then you have Vantard.

More than one long-time non-fanboi gamer has suggested that Ultima Online was mostly Raph Koster's baby. In the late nineties, Garriott was devoting most of his time to adventure traveling with Space Adventures and his elaborate parties and being the "corner man" for the convicted felon prizefighter he sponsored. Maybe he got the credit for Ultima Online like he got the Korean's money, through hype and personality. Remember that EA couldn't get him interested in Ultima 2, though EA got all the blame then for mistreating poor Lord British by giving up on him.
It makes sense to me. Seven years and Tabula Rasa? Is this really what you get when a great talent works hard for seven years with an unlimited budget? Or maybe the talent wasn't so great, and not enough work took place. But nobody cares very much about the investors. We don't get games without someone who's willing to invest.
If you look at Koster's career, or someone like Trip Hawkins, they are developers who live and breathe games. All Richard can talk about is why he deserves to fly in space, or his boxer friend, his eccentric collection of junk at Brittania Manor, his daddy issues with the astronaut...

I have sworn off MMO's for a while... a LONG while... after the AoC debacle. I'm sick of the old EQ/WoW paradigm, I'm sick of fantasy games, and I'm extra sick of games coming out lacking serious core promised features.
CO has the superhero thing, and I like CoX, and I loved making chars, too bad I could stand the endless instance grind and repetitive content (I had like a million badges, and as cool as they were when they started being the main reason I was running around it was time to quit).
If they can just get char creation AS GOOD as CoX I'd be happy, if they get it better it'll take me days to even start playing.
Comparisons to CoX? I'm not worried about it at all, CoX had a lot going for it, unfortunately it had a very "first effort"/amateurish feel [specifically when thinking of content], and WTF is wrong with a CoX2??? Nothing IMO.. though that being said;
CO is not CoX2, in that its going to approach the MMO dynamic like a wholly new animal, though one could say DCUO is CoX2 as well just because its also superhero based... which is an unfair comparison to both games.
I also LIKE that CO is the reincarnation of a Marvel MMO, that means that this is built on a solid foundation with a new IP that can slide right into place... that is why the game has been so playable in hands-on time that several reviewers have had (here, RPS, etc)
And finally DCUO has the ultimate kiss of death: SOE.
'Nuff Said
agree, 100%
Go whore your WoW Jr threads somewhere else, its off topic here... as much as I'm glad I've quit AoC no amount of money would get me to play that EA tripe...
