Define what you want before you jump into a game.
Here‘s a phrase that I often hear from my peers (full-time students with near full-time jobs) :
“I just don’t have the time to enjoy WoW anymore”
I’m in the same boat; no time for WoW. I play FFXI instead.
“WHAT!? You play a force-party game with a maxed-out schedule!?”
Yeah, in fact, that’s why I play force-party.
Lets play through two scenarios…
Lets say I had one night a week to just game away into the night…I hop on WoW, or a similar game, and I start soloing (because I haven’t really had time to make online friends either), and nobody bothers me, I just solo for 6 hours if I can stand to play by myself for that long. Chances are I just get bored out of my mind. Maybe I do get a party, but more often than not I’m just doing my own thing.
OR I get on FFXI, a game that has been criticized by outsiders for its harsh solo environment, and I wait, (sometimes for an hour), BUT, I get a party and start kicking ass. We play the game the way that the designers wanted it to be played: together.
Bottom line? Before you think about fitting gaming into your schedule Define whether you want to be a solo-player or you just have less time than would be ideal.
alright guys, seriosuly though, this is just an idea..just an idea, i truly wouldnt call my self an experienced MMO player.
this is the point where i would say is it really worth paying 15$/month to play solo 1 night a week?
for that matter i go get a copy of oblivion or KOTOR1-2 and not pay a subscription and still play solo
you might play alone but im in a world with other people (that you rarely talk to, and if you do you usually get insulted or ignored) for that matter open your laptop beside your computer and start chatting on msn/aim/yahoo/gtalk etc... with your friends (since you dont have time to make ingame friends anyway.
other people make/sell weapons, so do NPCs in single player.
to the OP great logic, i like it.
6 hours playing solo
or
1 hour looking for group and 5 hours playing the game full potential... brilliant

Immersion i think is the word hope i spell right Spanish IS my first language. But yes Immersion is the word I think. WoW is a BIG open world It immerses you into it. It embraces you. You want to explore a cave or a dungeon go for it? Take that chance to find hidden treasure chest, or skin some Yeti that you need to craft that new peace of armor!
It feels alive it feels like a WORLD not a instence not Mini world of warcraft not Room of warcraft WORLD OPEN WORLD of warcraft with tons of areas to explore a lot of little things that make you feel like you are part of it.
This is mainly the only reason I still sometimes re install the game for a month..then I get the 10 year olds crying on chat..and I unsubscribe for a year...
but why only WoW, why not star wars galaxies or eve online or EQ2
and as for the tin foil hat, usually i am not paranoyac about anything but this craving is begining to be recurring and anoying, though no thanks to you for any constructive or usefull post (exept calintz333, he had a standing theory and instructive and usefull comment)
i played WoW for 1 month and a half (perhaps 2 max 3) when it first launched and i did not like it at all and quit playing it. every since then once in a while i get this awfull craving to reinstall the game and resub.
what i find weird is
1 never really liked the warcraft series
2 did not like the game play
3 only played for 2 months max 3
and still to this day (yesterday) i got an awfull craving to reinstall the game and play world of warcraft. something is really fishy IMHO
something subliminal maybe? a visual psychologically addicting shape? audio? both?
has this every hapened to anyone else (not necesarely with WoW)

anyway on topic,
hospitalized after 24 hours of WoW
24 hours of gaming? first of all once in a while a long sessions is actually fun. a human can easely stay awake for 24 hours straight... (k any student can easely stay awake for 24 hours straight) but you really have to have psychological problems if you forget to eat or drink. its way past addiction when you NEED to stay at your computer and can't take 10-20 minutes to have a meal, or hell, order pizza and eat it AS YOU PLAY!
when i do lan parties (have 5-6 friends over and play for a long period of time) the last thing we forget is the Food. industrial quantities of pizza and beer and/or energy drinks (we are all over 21)
Kid runs away and found dead
again, way past regular addiction. psychological problems once more. when some one can't find something else to do when a game is taken away, i remember back when i was in highschool my parents would take the TV and computer away if my grades where not high enough. what did i do? i read a book, i played outside, i actually did homework.
when one thing in your life takes control so much that you end up killing yourself for it is a psychological problem. and the only person to blame is A the person in questions (even if its not his fault) and the parents if the psychological problem is not genetically adhered.
GTA made me do it?
what do you call a person who cant make the difference between reality and fiction? Schizophrenic?
all in all, all these cases are psychological problems the person in question may have and blaming a game is not a right way. note: that it is always those who trash and bash and for some odd reason want the games to die are the first ones to blame those games.
I agree with you except for the eating part. People can easily forget to eat among other things if you're having alot of fun or concentrating alot on something.
I'd say the overall message we're trying to convey is guns don't kill people. People kill people, the gun was just their choice of "how" they chose to kill. Just like this boy chose WOTLK to aggravate his already poor condition. He didn't have to be doing anything to collapse or get cramps. All he had to do was not eat and sleep for 24 hours because his body was already so weak. Stupidity on him and his parents part.
If anything this story teaches that scrawny little kids shouldn't try and go on long gaming sessions. Save that stuff for the big boys.
really, well i usually get hungry and my stomach lets me know it, i cant skip a meal without feeling it even if i am concentrated or having fun or whatever, there is also conditioning that takes effect.
eating everyday at the same time will make your body get used to it and if one day you dont eat at that time you will just feel weird and very hungry.
if i were to choose who would win between human instincts or WoW adiction, i will always go for human instincs.
but yeah, if you are frail and weak do not stress your body.

Are you still playing (or subscribed to) your first MMO?
